Super Smash Bros 4

Discussion in 'Miscellaneous Conjectures' started by Wonder Smash, Jun 25, 2012.

  1. This is supposed to be a topic about Super Smash Bros 4, but I'm sure you already knew that. :p

    Confirmed Information

    Development Team

Masahiro Sakurai will direct Super Smash Bros 4, with Sora developing. It has been confirmed that Namco Bandai will also be developing it.

    Platforms

Super Smash Bros 4 will be developed for both Wii U and 3DS.

    Title

An official title has yet to be confirmed at this time, but it will probably contain some kind of fighting word like "Melee" or "Brawl". Other titles such as "Universe" and "Strife" have been rumored, but later deconfirmed.

    Characters

None, but Sakurai has said that it's possible for a Capcom character to appear, and he has expressed interest in bringing back more retro Nintendo characters. He has also said that he thinks Smash Bros has just about hit a wall when it comes to the amount of characters that will be included in the game. On a side note, it's highly likely that Mario, Link, Samus, Kirby, and other major characters from past games will be included.

    Stages

    None.

    Miscellaneous

Sakurai has said that Super Smash Bros 4 on Wii U and 3DS won't merely be a sequel as Melee and Brawl were, and will add more than just characters and stages. What he means by that at this point is unclear, but it could mean that there will be some kind of new feature that changes the series in a big way, bigger than even trophies and the Subspace Emissary.

The 3DS version will have an enhanced level of customization, allowing a player to improve a character through battles and rewards.

Namco Bandai and Sora have completed a working prototype of the game, not that it will make the long wait feel any shorter. :p

That's every bit of confirmed information that I could find through various sources. If you know of anything that I've missed, please let me know as long as it's a reliable source. I might put in my own ideas later, and you're certainly welcome to post yours. Let the discussion begin! :D

  2. Not sure if you've seen this or not, but roaming SmashBoards today, I've come across this article depicting a bit about this teaser website that MAY be based for Namco's answer to the Dojo!!~. For my opinion on this, just looky here at this Skype convo between Zantok and I earlier today:

    [3:03:51 PM] Jonathan: Wtf
    [3:03:53 PM] Jonathan: http://www.bandaigames.channel.or.jp/list/newtitle/
[3:03:57 PM] Jonathan: SSB4 teaser page
[3:04:00 PM] Jonathan: What is this blasphemy
[3:04:30 PM] Lister Potter III: Yeah I saw that earlier
[3:04:35 PM] Lister Potter III: But it could be three possible things
[3:04:41 PM] Lister Potter III: Smash
    [3:04:47 PM] Jonathan: >Not Playstation
[3:04:48 PM] Lister Potter III: Project X-Zone
[3:04:50 PM] Lister Potter III: or a new IP
[3:04:51 PM] Lister Potter III: That reminds me
[3:04:57 PM] Lister Potter III: Seth Killian
[3:05:03 PM] Lister Potter III: The guy who did a lot of work on SFIV and MvC3
[3:05:05 PM] Lister Potter III: Has left Capcom
[3:05:08 PM] Lister Potter III: and is now with Sony
[3:05:16 PM] Lister Potter III: Helping out their Sony Smash Bros
[3:05:59 PM] Jonathan: ...So that's what he left for?
[3:06:07 PM] Jonathan: I read his letter on Unity.
[3:06:17 PM] Jonathan: So he's commiting career suicide
    [3:06:21 PM] Jonathan: Cool.
    [3:06:22 PM] Jonathan: :5
[3:06:37 PM] Jonathan: http://pxz.channel.or.jp/ Project X Zone already has an official website though so wtf
[3:07:04 PM] Jonathan: I'm fully expecting Smash or a new IP entirely. Heck, I'd be excited by either.
    (But please be Smash.)
[3:08:06 PM] Jonathan: If you look at the bottom left-most picture, it looks like the hill scene from Brawl's opening that you also see in SSE's ending and on Final Destination

    [3:14:56 PM] Jonathan: http://nintendo3dsblog.com/a-piece-of-whiteboard-art-for-smash-bros/

That last link up there contains a piece of whiteboard art made by Sakurai's team at SORA for teasing SSB4. What interests me about it is how they're all jumping at what appears to be one of the Heart Containers.... from Kid Icarus: Uprising. It's probably just a nod to Uprising, since that's what the team had just finished prior to SSB4's development, but maybe we'll see those hearts to some degree involved in SSB4's engine. Ya never know.

  3. Something new to rekindle the fire in our Smash bellies (for those of us who care, of course!):

All rumour of course, but it's always been interesting hyping up good ol' Smash when there is a new detail or two that is prospective and on the horizon.

From a personal perspective, I'd rather see the Comet Observatory as a stage representing the 'Galaxy' titles over the Starship Mario, but I'd really be fine with either, depending on how Nintendo makes it. It'd make a lot more sense to do the Observatory as the stage anyway. Takamaru is someone who has been speculated to return since Melee as far as I'm concerned, but I'd like to see him, especially with his Nintendo Land representation. And as the Kid Icarus revival has shown, anything is very much possible thanks to Smash.

  4. How did I NOT hear about this sooner?!? Clearly I need to search for new Smash Bros information more often than just once every few hours. :p (Exaggerating a little there, of course, but apparently I do need to double my efforts. :D)

    • That would be so totally freaking awesome, and it would definitely be much better than the five more month wait I was expecting until E3 2013. Still, that seems a bit early, so we'll have to wait and see.
    • For Little Mac, HECK TO THE FREAKING YES!!! For Takamaru, I've never played his game series, but from what I know, he's cool too.
    • King K. Rool and Ridley both seem like they'd be cool. I'd probably play as both of them, especially Ridley, because he's an alien space pirate pterodactyl.
    • Shulk and Ghirahim seem likely, although I'm not so sure about Dillon, given that his game just barely came out last year, and he isn't a character from a game that was practically begged for to be localized, (Like Shulk), or a major antagonist from one of Nintendo's flagship series. (Like Ghirahim) Still, he would be cool too.
    • Again, it would be cool, but I don't think it'll happen. Playing as a character from Wonderful 101 would be cool though, especially since it's one of my most anticipated Wii U games.
    • Starship Mario would be cool, and so would Comet Observatory. Honestly, I'm good with either one, as long as the Good Egg Galaxy theme is available in My Music. The rest of the stages could probably happen.
    • Given that the Yoshi Land game itself is still a rumor, I'm not really sure whether or not this is plausible, but it could happen.
    • Same as directly above, although new supporting characters in established franchises are usually good, so I'd welcome him/her/it.
Like you said, this could all turn out to be a load of crap, (Although you said it differently. :p) but I would certainly love for all of this to be true.

  5. Halibuton's rumor will be made or broken by the end of this month with a Yoshi's Island U announcement, apparently. The inclusion of Debu in this list was a very smart one, even if Halibuton is a hoax, just based off of the plain audacity adhered to such a statement. Like Brawly, I'm cool with either/or out of Starship Mario or Comet Observatory, though I recognize the Comet Observatory as more immediately recognizable, so I'd personally go with that.

I don't know what to think about Dillon, never have. There's no doubt that he'd make an interesting character, though, yet I've always greatly doubted his inclusion. Wouldn't be the craziest Sakurai has ever done, though! Shulk has always seemed extremely plausible to me, and if not Shulk, just give me a stage reproduction of one of those amazing locales from Xenoblade + the beautiful soundtrack pl0x. Little Mac and Takamaru both seem extremely likely; the latter is a real McCoy-like shoo-in, in my book. Wonderful 101? Well, it could happen. Doubt Ghirahim, but wouldn't be surprised either way. He'd be cool to me, honestly. King K. Rool seems like a shoo-in; Ridley, too, but I'm a little less sure about him for some reason. I hope so, though!

  6. Well, it looks like that rumor was a fraud. :( But the good news is that we now know that we'll see a trailer this E3. :D:D:D:D:D

  7. The trailer and screens impending and whatever info comes with them are much welcome! After a year and a half since the initial announcement, especially! I'm thinking a mid-2014 release at the earliest; so, let's hope we get DOJO!!-like updates by the end of this year just for the heck of it. That tided us all over with the updates every weekday, for sure, during Brawl's development.

Who do you think will be revealed in the E3 2013 trailer? Obviously, Mario, Link, Pikachu, and Kirby are shoo-ins, with an outside shot of Donkey Kong, Fox, Samus, and/or Yoshi, any of the starter characters from the original, really. But, who else? I'm guessing we'll see Takamaru and/or Little Mac to fill out the "retro revival" void, ala Pit, perhaps Ridley if Samus is in the same trailer or King K. Rool if DK is, to really quench fan appetites, and one or two unexpected characters or just characters that will create a lot of buzz, like Snake did, perhaps in the form of Mega Man, I'd say. Shulk might be tossed in too, to represent the modern series right off the bat. I really think his chances shot up a lot after the latest Nintendo Direct.

  8. I'm personally thinking a November 2014 release date, although I certainly wouldn't mind an earlier one. :D The Smash Bros Dojo was what made the wait until Brawl bearable, and even exciting. I hope that they do bring it back, and I'm pretty sure that they will. Who knows? Maybe they'll even start updating the day the trailer is shown at E3! That would be AWESOME, and it would make sense, given all the development time they've had so far.

As for who will be shown in the E3 trailer... I've put WAY too much thought into that. :p My guess is that they'll have Mario, Link, Samus, Kirby, Fox, and Pikachu as veterans, and for newcomers, I'm thinking Little Mac, Takamaru, Tom Nook, Shulk, and, as a last second surprise character, Mega Man. No matter who they reveal though, I'm sure the trailer will be AWESOME.

  9. November 2014 could happen, but at this point, I'm thinking we'll likely get Smash near the middle of next year. I think that, since we won't be getting an actual E3 presentation by Nintendo this year, that we'll be getting a Nintendo Direct delivered by Iwata and/or Sakurai at or near the date of E3 this year to unveil:

    1. Mario Kart U footage, pictures, and release date
    2. Super Mario U footage, pictures, and release date
    3. Super Smash Bros. 4 trailer and initial character/stage announcements + DOJO!!-like website unveil
    4. Other stuff, like an official date for Wind Waker HD and Super Luigi U

I think that that would be enough to both appease Nintendo fans and draw in the casual crowd as well as a couple of hardcore factions with the official unveiling of two Mario's (both supposedly coming out this year) and some real information on SSB4. A lot sure has changed since the last time I've opened up this topic and mustered up a reply as far as how Nintendo handles releasing substantial information, I'll tell ya that. While I'll miss E3 for them this year, it was a good business decision and the Nintendo Directs can help them keep the hype train going as long as they want for up-and-coming titles and new features on existing titles.

As far as the trailer goes, that's impending no matter what program it may be unveiled upon, I'm certain that we'll see Mario, Link, Kirby, and Pikachu, just as we have in the past. One or two of Samus, Fox, Donkey Kong, Captain Falcon, Ness, or Yoshi will also likely be seen, while I'd put money on the unveiling of someone along the lines of Ridley, Takamaru, or Little Mac to help keep the hype going amongst Smash fans who'd hoped and wished for them as playables for years and years now. As per the super duper special unveil that's bound to come along somewhere or somehow, I think Mega Man is fairly believable, as well as Pac-Man, given Namco-Bandai's hand in all of this and his legacy as a video game character, or perhaps even Rayman, given Ubisoft's heavy support of the Wii U right out of the gate. Nothing is going to top a Snake unveil, but perhaps we'll get something cool and a little unexpected by comparison to other choices, like Simon Belmont.

You know what? I'm a weirdo, but I wouldn't be exactly against seeing someone along the lines of Edward Kenway from Assassin's Creed IV in the upcoming Smash title. It'd be in a similar unexpected, mature ilk as Snake, and it'd help advertise both Smash and Assassin's Creed and its current Kenway lineage all at the same time, whilst providing an experience that would be undoubtedly unique to Smash as a whole. Or maybe I'm just a sucker for wanting to fight on a stage along that looks like this:

Smash 4 trailer. So much info so much hype. 3 new cahracters. 2 in this trailer 1 in an interview with Sakurai. More info to come.

  11. Wait, the Wii Fit Trainer is a playable character? What the hell? XD

Well then... Defeating opponents with the power of exercise... Okay...

    WHAT THE HELL?! XD

  12. I'm honestly severely hoping that Wii Fit Trainer means that we are getting a much more diverse roster, and that they didn't just pick her too make us all go WTF. Because thus far, I feel like that is the most primary reaction that we have received...

If Wii Fit Trainer doesn't get a "My body is ready" taunt there is just no reason to use her. ¯\(°_o)/¯

  13. Hey, watch your mouth, Eebit! That's my future major you're insulting...

When I saw Giga's post, I was going WTF myself, and was even a little disappointed. BUT HER TRAILER MAN. Just watch it ;___; It'll make you go from "WTF" to "WFT!<3".

Also I really hope Lucario stays, or is at least replaced by some other equally-as-cool Pokemon.

  14. Nah, I'm still WTF about it.

  15. Apparently Sakurai is considering the return of Mewtwo for Smash 4, possibly featuring the new Forme from X and Y.

Any thoughts? I personally don't really like the design of the new Forme, but if Mewtwo is returning (and hopefully replacing Lucario for the spot he so deserved in Brawl ;-; ) then I'm not going to complain about it.

  16. ... Huh... I do remember reading a small bit of info about that. Glad to know that there's a possibility of Mewtwo returning to Smash Bros. (Currently, I'm neutral regarding its new forme, so... yeah...)

Also, anyone else notice that out of the original 8, only Yoshi hasn't been shown on the site?

  17. I can't be the only one excited about The Villager. He's going to bury you with his shovel. :3

  18. MEWTWO!!! YAAAAAAY! But please no XY forme unless 5 second Final Smash transformation kthxbai

    Also.

VILLAGER!!! YESSSSH! Though I would have preferred Tom Nook the Villager is totally okay in my books and thus far he looks like he is going to be fucking awesome in game. Each of the three new characters look like they could be great fighters.

The only thing I don't like about Villager and Wii Fit Trainer is that with the two of them combined there is no reason at all to have The Miis be playable which would have been a cool little feature. Why is there no reason? Villager = Our Avatar, Wii Fit Trainer = Wii rep. What other arguments can there really be made for the Mii's inclusion now?

  19. A NEW CHALLENGER APPROACHING!

Well sort of. Another Smash Bros veteran has been confirmed to be in Smash Bros. 4. Captain Olimar is back! Not many people were surprised by this but given Sakurai's statements about certain characters such as the Ice Climbers being difficult to implement in the 3DS version there was speculation that Olimar would have similar difficulties.

Check the Dojo for more screenshots. Nothing really special of note was revealed in his screenshots. Red, Blue, Yellow, White and Purple Pikmin all return for Olimar to use. No word or Winged or Rock Pikmin at the moment but I don't think we'll see Olimar using them in Smash 4.

  20. I don't think that we'll see Olimar using the new Pikmin either. I mean, I'm not necessarily ruling it out, it just wouldn't make much sense to do so since he's, you know, Olimar, and not involved in the new story mode in Pikmin 3 which actually involves the new Pikmin, plus incorporating them into his moveset may or may not just be overloading him with stuff. It looks to me like we may have settled upon a trend here- Note how Wii Fit Trainer (I love her by the way- keep an open mind! She makes sense if you think about it, and it's that surprise factor that really reinvigorates the community. Sheesh.) was revealed on 6.11.2013, and Olimar on 7.12.2013. Could we be in for a new reveal basically every month? Here's to being proven wrong with a newcomer reveal tomorrow.

In other news, those Wii U graphics already look much more defined than they were in the initial trailer. I'm really starting to feel the hype for this game now - not just because of aesthetics obviously, but I'm just saying, they look even more fantastic. As per MewTwo, I reckon that if he's involved that we'll get him in his forever more iconic original form, though I'm not really ruling anything out and I won't mind too much either way. I would prefer the original form by a smidge, though. Guess I can just relate to it more. Dem childhood memories.

As per all of the newcomers, I'm down with all of 'em. Also loving what they're doing with Bowser and Pit to provide a fresh breath of air to their movesets. Gives me hope for ol' Ganny, yet!
