The Etrian Odyssey Thread

Discussion in 'Miscellaneous Conjectures' started by Keileon, Dec 17, 2013.

  1. Although completely unexpected, this looks really, really neat. As a fan of Mystery Dungeons, I can't wait to see where this goes.

wow what. already? Etrian Odyssey OP.

  2. I've... actually never played an Etrian Odyssey title before. It's always bin just at the tip-top of my backlog for gaming but I've never quite gotten to it yet. I'm thinking about finally making my first EO purchase. I'm aware that the characters are mostly "faceless" (from what I recall?) heroes, though I have to ask if there's any chronological order or anything that I should be following. Basically, where should I start with EO, being a complete beginner to the franchise?

  3. @Jonno Probably Untold; either one. The Untold line is remakes of the older games, and they have both a Story Mode and a Classic (faceless hero) mode. I recommend Story, though Flim would recommend Classic.

Untold 1 and 2 both have demos, IV has a demo, Untold 2 is coming out fully on the fourth.

Also the DS games, 1-3, have pretty bad interfaces from what I remember reading (and EO1's text is barely legible).

  4. @Keileon - In that case, I say "first come, first serve" (or whatever twistable, turnable malformation of the classic saying that the quote may take form to better accomodate this particular situation) and I'll follow your recommendation! Somehow didn't even remember that they demos were out there, so I'll give Untold a spin over the next couple of days and update everyone on how I'm liking it and all thereafter. If I end up become a super fan, I'll go for the clunkier originals since I tend to adore the charm of more "retro" outputs, though the improvements of Untold make me lean more towards it in general since the option for a more comfortable experience is there.

  5. Well, a bit too late to be recommending one but if you had to choose one of them, I'd say IV. Sure, the Untold games are decent enough, but the difficulty is pretty unbalanced on hard and IV has subclassing, which is the best and IV's classes are more interesting than EOU's. And really, if you're playing Etrian Odyssey, you're gonna have to play on the hardest, that's where all the fun is! And as for story vs classic, classic all the way for me. I wasn't really a fan of EOIU's pretty predictable story and forcing us to use the most generic and 'optimal' party build wasn't a smart choice considering how the original was all about player choice. (You can reclass them, but still)

Oh, and EOIII is supposed to really good. (It has subclassing! Which is the best!)

  6. Sorry Muddy but as overpowered as Bushi sub Nightdancer (or whatever the dual-wielding class was called) is, EOU's Highlander is overall more interesting. :x

  7. I'm not much of a Blood Knight guy so I never actually liked the Bushi or Highlander classes...!

  8. Is there any canon statement of when the games happen in relation to each other

    specifically, EO/EOU and EO2/EOU2

i have a theory and this must be answered

  9. I don't think they've ever said when but we do know that they both take place in the same world. (Unlike 3 and possibly 4)

Edit: Found this on a fan site:

"Etrian Odyssey 2: Heroes of Lagaard takes place just a year or so after the storyline in the first game."

Edit 2: While looking for that I also found this:

Nothing special, right? Well, wrong. There's a map in the back with Etria, High Lagaard and Armoroad on it. And it's official wallpaper art.

It's still just wallpaper art but hey, it's official.

  10. Only a year? Dammit, my theory doesn't work then.

  11. okay bertrand

    just

    okay.

  12. I beat EOU2.

The final boss in its entirety was really well-done, if a bit annoying.

On the other hand I hate hate HATE the fifth stratum and Ginnungagap B5F because of the fucking annoying FOE patterns.

THERE IS A CHEST ON B5F I LITERALLY CANNOT GET TO BECAUSE OF AN FOE THAT CAN'T BE FOUGHT

  13. I wrote a review. (Major spoiler warning. The spoilers are in character development and plot, which received an 8/10 and 10/10 respectively)

  14. Reached 30F and completed all the quests in Etrian Odyssey Untold 2. Just have to finish mapping out the labyrinth (mainly getting all the Floor Jumps), catalogue less than 2% of the monsters and items, check out Ginnungagap 5F again... oh, and beat the 30F boss.

I ran across it by accident looking for a certain guaranteed rare monster room and accidentally moved a cell to close. Entered battle with it with most of the party at half TP and one of my characters unable to Force Boost because I used a Force Break against like four FOEs in another room. Proceeded to last 30-35 turns against it, only to War Heal All and immediately get a party wipe the next turn.

Oh well~ Was only level 93, so I'll take it on again when I'm maxed out and have more than an Amrita II and two Nectars in my inventory.
