The Etrian Odyssey Thread

Discussion in 'Miscellaneous Conjectures' started by Keileon, Dec 17, 2013.

  1. I opened it and completed the first story mode mission.

    I like the music.

In regards to EOIV, I still haven't touched it since that lolmaze. I should probably pick it up again, but I probably won't.

  2. Getting a ROM for The Drowned City.

    Wish me luck.

  3. This fucking music why is it so good.

  4. on the note of the music

    Aw yeah

  8. Are they going to remake every EO that's not on 3DS?

EDIT: Rewatched the trailer; some (extremely simple) translations here:

Game's subtitle is "Knight of Fafnir".

    Princess - Arianna
    Survivalist - Flavio
    Defender (Paladin) - Bertrand
    Loli (War Magus?) - Kuroe

With the "player" character obviously unnamed. It seems that he has quite a lot more involvement in the plot than EOU, too. Really can't wait for this.

    Highlander Class confirmed! ...As DLC.

The screenshot also shows a "Gunner" party member, so there's that too.

EDIT: wow the screenshot has the /exact same/ party classes as EOU's Story Mode. Go figure.

  11. I'm getting that DLC.

  12. I own the Etrian Odyssey which was released on the 3DS (can't remember the name haha), and I am being honest when I say I can't really get into it. Mostly because it doesn't have the animations of the characters you control, and there is no real character development, nor a main character per say. If I were to compare it to something like Bravely Default, BD made me literally cry tears of joy because it is the perfect game for me. Overall, I liked the classes and mechanics, as well as the unique 3D explorations, but the combat and lack of memorable characters made me not do anything with it bar unlock the second area.

If I'm doing something wrong please tell me, because I'd be more than happy to give it another shot if I have.

  13. Etrian Odyssey is /not/ your standard RPG game, and should not be compared to one. If you own one of the main titles (i.e. the numbered games, probably Etrian Odyssey IV in your case), then you need to know that it completely forgoes story and character development in favor of customization. The main draw of the series is not something shallow like nifty graphics or animations, or an in-depth plot you would normally expect from a RPG, but the mechanics and merciless roguelike aspect of the game. It is not something I'd recommend to a RPG "casual", as the series, in my opinion, is more outwardly oriented towards veterans in that regard (please let's not forget the trainwreck that was Espy playing EOU).

However, Untold takes the basic EO formula and adds a legitimate "Story Mode" to it, with actual characters and a storyline. I think you should try that one first.

  14. You shouldn't call me an RPG casual, because I am far from a casual. The only games I like to play are RPGs, and compared to most, I find this one dull and unappealing - including the mechanics.

  15. Etrian Odyssey IV lacks an in-depth storyline; most of its appeal comes from the sheer level of customization, as Shadow said. I wouldn't call the mechanics "dull and unappealing", because to most of us they're not, but maybe you should try out Etrian Odyssey Untold, which has an actual storyline (which by the way is completely worth playing. The only person I know who doesn't like story mode hasn't played it beyond the demo and is a self-proclaimed "mechanicfag".)

Edit: ... Oh. You're only in the second stratum of EOIV.

Stick with it at least until the third; that's where its minimal story starts to actually pick up.

. . . Wait a minute you literally said "I liked the classes and mechanics" and then you turn around and say you found them "dull and unappealing"? wat

  16. Why is it so strange to like the concepts behind something and not the execution? I liked the ideas of what each class was and what they could bring to the table, but I just feel it was executed in a kinda 'meh' manner.
