Windows 10

  1. So, who here has upgraded to Windows 10? If you have, what're your thoughts so far?

    Myself? I upgraded my desktop recently. Was relatively painless, minus the Nvidia driver not loading properly on first boot into Windows post-upgrade, and as such, lack of sound from my monitor's headphone jack. Windows 10 recognised my Intel NIC on first boot, which runs contrary to what I've seen some people on tech forums say.

  2. I have it on my Surface tablet, and it is... interesting. I miss Windows 8 Skype, because I can't make it a small sidebar like I did on Windows 8 because it has to take up half the screen. I played a little with Cortana, and I like the freshpaint program on here, but I'm not thrilled with having to go through so many things to get to all my programs. I give it maybe 3 stars.

  3. IMO Windows 10 is more designed for desktop environments than 8/8.1 were, as all Metro apps now open in windows rather than full screen by default, which I like.

  5. I've only had Windows 8 for like three months, and before that I had Windows XP.

    Yes, I had Windows XP in 2015. I just wanted you to know that.

  6. Yeah same honestly. I fought to be with XP until the bitter end when I was forced, forced -- we're talking tooth and nail shit here -- to upgrade to Win8.


    That said, I actually don't mind Win10. I had been using one of those "GET THE START BUTTON BACK" add-ons for Win8 so them bringing the Metro apps into the desktop is something I am quite happy about. I really haven't done a lot of fishing around with the new features just yet. I haven't heard much about Cortana, but Starr didn't have the most glowing of recommendations of her usefulness so I'm not expecting miracles. Really, I have no complaints since the majority of what I disliked about Win8 has been fixed up.

    Edge might even be a half-decent browser once it gets plugin support...!

  7. I honestly feel kinda iffy about 10, if only because I keep hearing about people having various troubles with it (both when downloading and using). I've been using Windows 7 since I was... 10, I want to say? Windows 8 looked pretty shit, IMO, so obviously that never happened. But with 10, you have the whole menu back and stuff so I think I'll probably be getting it once I get my new laptop. Cortana makes me happy, if only because I'm a nerd, but I doubt I'll be needing her much. From the few looks I've had at Microsoft Edge, I think it's better than Explorer, but I'm probably going to stick with Chrome anyways.

  9. That's strange. From what I've heard on /r/feedthebeast, folks have actually gotten better performance on Minecraft after updating to Windows 10.

  10. It's a graphics card issue. In short: Windows 10 doesn't have a driver update for the chipset I use, and Intel says they won't make one.

  11. One thing I will say about Windows 10 is that it seems to be sucking the battery life out of my laptop in ways that 8.1 couldn't even dream of.

  12. That's its telemetry features, which unfortunately can't be completely disabled under Home Edition. You need to drop like $250 (!!!) for the Enterprise edition upgrade to be able to disable it, which I don't really agree with.

  13. So I just upgraded to W10.

    All I have so far are first impressions, but damn I like this.
