Top Five Films

Discussion in 'Miscellaneous Conjectures' started by Eebit, Jan 29, 2014.

  1. I had this question posed to me recently: which are your top five favourite films? And why? I guess I want to hear about what makes some good films, especially as a kid taking a first year Film Studies course (not that I feel it has made me any more educated on films, but hey).

So yeah, post a list of your top five! I'll chime in a little later on in the discussion~

  2. Frozen, Tangled, Brave, How to Train Your Dragon, Despicable Me (1), Madagascar 3, Monsters Inc, Monsters University are definitely among my top favourites; I have trouble with my favourite five. Will explain sooner or later.

This is of course excluding Indian films. If I included those then Taare Zameen Par, Three Idiots and English Vinglish would kick everything clear out of the water. Other two would probably be Frozen and Despicable Me. First two should be international must-watches.

  3. how did I not see this

    1. The Butterfly Effect (Director's Cut): Aside from my slight crush on Ashton Kutcher, this movie has an incredible plot and score, excellent acting, and a LOT on the paranormal side of things. Not ghosts, though. It's about the main character, Evan Treborn, having a special, genetic ability that gets written off as a schizophrenia-type mental illness. Basically, if he has some way to "remember" events that happened(in his case, writing a journal every day), he can actually go back to those events and change what happens. Change one thing, change everything.

    2. How to Train your Dragon: I don't think I need to tell anyone what this is about. The movie has an excellent score, some awesome characters, and >dragons.

    3. Bolt: I don't know why I love this movie so much. It's about a dog used in a TV show where he protects his master from a generic cat villain, but he doesn't know that it's all just for the camera. A plot twist in the show and Bolt's overeagerness to save his master lead to him ending up in New York City, and with a fanboy hamster and an unwilling cat he must travel back to Hollywood. The plot's actually very sweet and a little tearjerking near the end, I love the original songs, and the same guy who does HTTYD's score does this movie's.

    4. Dogma: I'm not usually one for religious plots. Dogma is an exception, probably because it's a comedy. Two fallen angels- Bartleby and Loki- were cast out of heaven basically because Loki was drunk and listened to Bartleby when he shouldn't have, and are sentenced to remain on Earth for the rest of eternity. A loophole in Catholic beliefs gives them a way in, but since "god is infallible" the universe would cease to exist if they return. So a woman who's said to be "the last scion" has to stop them. Actually really hilarious.

    5. School of Rock: Music and comedy never went so good together. After his music endeavors kinda flop, a man pretends to be his substitute teacher roommate to make some money at a private school, but he gets more into his... "job" when he discovers how well the class plays music. He starts forming them into a band and crew so he can enter them in Battle of the Bands and make even /more/ money.

  4. 1. Moonrise Kingdom: I love love love this movie so nuch. It's got whimsy and the color is amazing and a plot I relate to. Wes Anderson is now my favorite everything.

    2. Tangled: Once again, I relate to this movie on a spiritual level. I have almost the exact same personality and approach to life as Rapunzel. Plus, I don't get out much.

    3. The Great Gatsby: I just love Gatsby okay and Leonardo DiCaprio.

    4. Midnight in Paris: It earned its Oscars. I love odd, artsy movies, and this just has that vibe. I love that vibe.

    5. The Book Thief: While not all entirely accurate, I love the book and the movie did it justice. A very well done adaptation.

    5. Lincoln: I love Abraham Lincoln. I share his birthday, dammit. Daniel Day Lewis earned his Oscar in his role. Yes, that five was deliberate.
