Obscure Harmony ~ The Trapped World

Discussion in 'Statistical Roleplays' started by Masquerade, Oct 4, 2011.

  1. ~Obscure Harmony: The Trapped World~

It was a world so real to me...like I had never possessed another home. Yet, I had no memories of my past here. That's why I felt as though I didn't belong. Despite all of this, I still embraced this place. I had power here. I composed and played beautiful music. I fell in love. This girl...my heart was hers from the start. That sweet smile and those compassionate eyes. I fell for her siren's song and aimed to play my own to confess my love for her, but here she frowned and said it was not meant to be. I wandered the river lands south of Sineria and chanced upon another lovely lady by the name of Clarissia. She, too, I fell in love with, but once again, the love was unrequited. It was here that my purpose in this world turned for the crazy. I know not the name of this world or its lands, save Sineria. At least, that's how it was in the beginning. But through an intense sequence of events, I traveled the world's frozen mountains, steaming marshes, harshest deserts, dense forests and jungles. It was all a compilation of things I used to not believe could coexist on one place.

And the creatures. So many amazing creatures, some hostile, others more peaceful. The people. So many interesting personalities and abilities. They had names and real lives; how could this world not be a true world? I met with many dangers in exploration, but I had friends with me. We didn't even know what we were after, but in the end..... ... ...no. It's....it's too much to relate again. If you're so curious as to how this particular story went, well...I'd suggest you just turn away now. Though the journey was great, the destination was one I'd rather forget...forever.

[Note: There is one spot open for this role play. And Eebit has it reserved. kthx. I'll post the introduction scene after the CP thread and everything has been taken care of along with your profiles of which you will be needing two. :3]

  2. He had navigated away from Cordan, a small village in the river lands known as Lasala just south of Sineria. That night, he was in the mood for playing music, and thus set up a space on the corner of one of the village's streets and began to play. Passersby stopped to listen, a great multitude of them, and after the songs were done, they cheered and threw much gold at him. He laughed and shielded his face while they continued to cheer, the gold hitting his arms and falling harmlessly to the ground. They had an odd way of expressing their delight, that was to be sure. He put away his instrument and scooped up the money as the villagers went off to tend to their business and homes. However, as he stood up, ready to go, he realized a familiar face was not in the crowd as it often was. It was her face that was missing. He wandered over to a small group of lingering people.

"Have you seen her around this evening?" he asked, bowing his head in apology for interrupting their conversation. It was unlike him, but this was one piece of information he would pay all his gold to know.

One of the people shrugged and pointed to the exit of the village. "I'd check Raym Falls if I were you. She loves to sit on the cliff at night, looking over the Sineria River." He looked up at the sky which was becoming dark, a cloudless expanse of black threatening to swallow the world, but with the light of the full moon to prevent complete consumption. "Seeing as how it's a particularly nice night, I'm pretty sure she's there. If you're going...well, just be careful, Masq. You've been here long enough to know what kinds of crazy things roam the land."

"I know. I'll be careful, no worries," the young man called Masq replied and bowed his head in thanks. He meandered down the road to the exit of the village and departed without any hesitation whatsoever. There were definitely some bad things out there, but that wasn't going to stop him from finding his love, even if she couldn't return the feeling. And so he walked a while down the large, dry mud road, taking different turns in a southeastern direction until he heard the rumbling of the Raym Falls. They were truly a sight to see. The murky waters of the Sineria river curved upwards upon a cliff and fell down into a small, nameless pool, but the waters were crystalline by that point. So clean. The falls themselves seemed to sparkle in the light of the moon this night. Past the pool, the land stretched out to form another cliff which overlooked the Sineria River. Masq stood on the riverbank at the bottom of the cliff and looked up.

There she was. Standing beneath the light of the moon with the beautiful waterfall behind her was a young woman with long brown hair and matching brown eyes. Her skin was fair and lightly tanned. This night she donned an elegant, frilly, white dress that accentuated her beauty and amplified it ten-fold. She closed her eyes and enjoyed as the cool breeze met her skin and fluttered her hair and dress, sighing in content. Masq merely gazed up at her from below, afraid to make any sound as to break the tranquility of this place...but that would not be a problem. The waters of the Sineria became crazed in a mere second and an enormous serpent plunged out from the depths, blue and gray like a fish, covered in scales. Its head was pointed and had a mouth full of fangs. The eyes were solid white, as if it couldn't see, but it looked up at the young woman with hunger, so it obviously wasn't blind. As it was about to slither upon the land, Masq shouted.

"Leave her be, you bastard!" he yelled and pulled out his violin. He heard the young woman screech from above as she looked down and saw what was going on.

"Masq, run!!" she called out to him, exasperated.

"If I run, it'll come after you. Don't worry; I can handle this. I was meaning to play this song for you anyway," he called up to her in reassurance, though now he was not too sure at all. This serpent seemed so different. Never before had he seen such a creature, and he was positive that the Sineria River was supposed to be free of such dangers, but this world was unpredictable. Regardless, he was about to face his fate and began to play a song.

Meanwhile, two travelers came to the spot on their way to Cordan. It was a wonderful place to rest, so that was what they had planned to do, but when trouble became apparent in this paradise, there was only one thing to do...

    This way, Celestine!

Diago Castellui ran smiling, holding the hand of a girl whom he wished to show the beautiful banks of the Sineria River. The rippling water was always something that soothed his mind and his rage, especially when he had a particularly poor day. Celestine did not know that side of him, and he was highly determined to keep it that way for as long as he could possibly manage; even if that meant retiring abruptly with no monetary sum to his name.

She giggled, much to his delight, as they inched closer to their destination. The banks were beautiful, and it was a distraction from their destination of Cordan. However, as they grew ever closer to the overlook of the river, Diago heard a pair of voices - seeming not dissimilar to two companions caught in the middle of an agonizing decision of love. Catching the tail end of the conversation, Diago slowed his pace to a halt, keeping Celestine firmly behind him.

Oh Celestine, forgive me, but I seem to have lured you into the path of a serpent…” Diago was devastated; the tranquil riverbanks were not known to have creatures beneath their depths. He drew his blade, preparing to slay the serpent alongside the violinist. Celestine remained silent when he cast a sidelong glance at her. Diago could not tell the owner of the second voice, but she was obviously close by…

Diago… don’t get hurt, please…” Celestine’s timid voice from behind him. She did not seem abashed by the blade that he held in his hand, though there was no time for such thoughts. Nodding his head to show that he had heard his companion, Diago called out to the violinist to his left, “Good evening, stranger! You look like you could use another set of hands!” Grinning, Diago brandished his blade… though his inner emotion did not match the one playing on his face.

    Player Phase 1!

Masq uses Special Command: Play the Song!

    DD: 1/10

As Masq placed the bow to the string, he heard the sound of people approaching and glanced over to his side. A man and a woman. They had such horrible timing. He watched as the man produced a blade and offered words. Masq turned his gaze back at the serpent before closing his eyes. "If you're willing to put your life on the line, I won't deny your help," he said. In truth, he wanted to tell them to get out of there, but, once again, this world was so very unpredictable. Could he have warded the serpent off on his own? "I've never met a manner of creature such as this before. Do be careful," he advised one last time. With that, he began to play his melody.

The notes filled the air, full of life. The breeze seemed to pick up as he started to play. It was soft...and sweet. Every chord placed upon the tongue would taste as pure sugar. Every fluctuation and oscillation in the tone placed upon the skin would feel as cotton. There was more to this melody than met the ear. Its sound was more than sound; there was heart and soul pouring out of this man through only the music. His face remained expressionless, eyes closed. He remained silent such that the night was still, save for his song. There was a lot hanging in the balance now; the song had to be finished.

    Masq waits.

For a moment, the world seemed to come to a complete halt as Celestine and Diago lost themselves in the music the strange man was playing from his instrument. The impossibly beautiful tune seemed to bring reality to its very knees… until the duo realized the task at hand. The unidentified enemy would surely not let them live so long as the ensemble continued to infringe upon its territory, no matter how serene at any other time of day, month, or year.

Celestine’s chestnut hair blew listlessly in the wind as she screwed her eyes shut, envisioning Leo, the Lion bestowing his power upon her companion, if only for a brief moment. Her prayers seemed to be answered, as a virulent aura took hold of Diago. He shimmered in form as a newfound confidence took hold of his very being, bringing him a vicious strength… which the rogue knew that he must use. Charging towards the serpentine figure in the river, Diago slashed viciously before throwing one of his shuriken deep into the skin of the being.

Drunk on power, Diago smiled back to Celestine and their newfound, music-playing ally… and for the first time, he saw a silhouette of a fourth member of the gathering. Hesitant to call out to the obviously feminine shadow, Diago instead turned his head back to the vicious snake in front of him, calling over his shoulder to the man, “Where did you learn to play like that?” Now was clearly not the optimal time for small talk, though his curiosity got the better of him…

Meanwhile, Celestine herself was still under the spell of the man’s magnificent song. Though her thoughts were hardly tangible, she caught a single thought echoing her companion’s sentiments. This man… he and his music are certainly not of this land…

((OoC: I didn't include the Bravery boost in my calculation of Diago's attack... I think it would be 9 ATK, but I'm not sure ^^; ))

She could hear it from her perch upon the cliff, and her heart melted. The young man had said this song was for her, and now, she couldn't stop from blushing in the moonlight. Down below, she watched as the newcomers set about protecting him as he played, and she glanced at her frilly dress. I...I can't dance like this.... she thought to herself in despair, but shook her head. It would be all right. Masq was taking the reins here now. With his song. The one that was meant to her. The one that was so beautiful, yet couldn't completely steal her heart. She glanced aside for a moment in shame. How could it be that the docile tones could not win her over? What was it that held her bound to the state she was in? Something deep inside her soul told her there would be more heartbreak falling in love with him than staying the way they were now, but the reason why that was to be completely escaped her.

Masq uses Special Command: Play the Song!

    DD: 3/10

Previously, his ears had only been filled with the sound of his song, making sure every note was hit to perfection, the chain result being such a beautiful melody. It was then he heard the man's voice, and he opened his eyes, slightly surprised, revealing that they were watery as if he were on the brink of crying, yet his face remained expressionless. "A sad story...I know not where I gained this talent; I merely awoke here and was able to play and write music to this caliber. My memories are...missing, but I've moved on to make new ones as I travel, sharing my music with everyone," he explained, his voice melding with the tones of his song. It was common knowledge to those who knew him well. Masq did not possess many of the memories he should have. His childhood. His family. His hometown. And it didn't help that nobody remembered him either. That only served to amplify drastically the feeling of him not belonging here, but if not here, where else could he belong?

The young man's hand continued to slide the bow across the strings of his instrument like a machine--as if it were second nature. He could carry on his conversation and not even pay any thought. Every note was still hit to perfection. It was picking up in beat now, a sort of warmth emanating from the tune that filled the air around him. There was blazing passion in the rise, and he sought to release it to the world, even if the earth was scourged by the heat of such love; he would not hide it any longer. He blinked a tear from his eye and let it roll down his cheek. Such an effect.... he thought simply, devoid of emotion in comparison with the song he was playing.

    Masq waits.

Diago delivered a powerful thrust to the neck of the serpentine beast, gouging it and piercing through its skin as he tossed another of his shuriken deep into its throat. The power he had acquired from Celestine’s magical abilities was coursing through his veins, infusing his adrenaline with the extra boost that he needed. The blood pounded in his ears as he frantically tried to defend Celestine, and the two new companions he had found… The serpent had taken a powerful bite out of his skin, but he remained largely impassive as he grimaced in pain from the aftershock of the bite. Once more he heard the wondrous sounds of the strange man’s music. “It must be difficult for you then, friend…” he muttered in compassion. He could not imagine being without his memories; it was just such an unfathomable circumstance.

Celestine stood sombrely off to the side, shaded by the cliffs. Her heart went out for the man whose name she did not know, and so she whispered an inaudible word of prayer to some unsung deity on his behalf. She did not know his name, nor his full life’s story, but his music was beautiful and what she did know of him was so mortifying that she could not help but almost shed a tear…

The sweet sound reached her from atop the cliff and she felt like jumping. It was as if she were invincible. She had to be beside him. She had to stand next to him. Though he could not have her heart, he would have her companionship. Even though she was safer on her perch, to not face the perilous danger next to him was an insult, especially after having him compose such a song for her. She took a deep breath, and, closing her eyes, plummeted from atop the cliff, landing deftly next to the man playing the violin. "Ouchies...that kinda hurt," she muttered, rubbing her shins before standing up and glaring at the beast. She offered a kind wave to the people helping out. "Thank you so much for lending us your aid," she said politely before placing her hand gently on the man's shoulder. "Please don't stop playing, Masq. Ever. This tune...it just sweeps me up," she said to him gently, though he seemed rather unresponsive at the moment.

Masq uses Special Command: Play the Song!

    DD: 6/10

”It hasn’t been that bad...,” Masq offered up in response to Diago’s statement. ”The new memories I’ve made are good enough for me.” Here, his gaze turned fierce, the piercing eyes blazing upon the beast. ”I’ve got a new future to make...,” he said, his music slowing down greatly in pace, the bow across the string generating an almost frightening sound, low in pitch and drawn out. ”Nothing will stop me from moving forward!” As quick as the sound had slowed, Masq tore the bow across the instrument rapidly. Heartbeats. Fast ones. Each note was a heartbeat. He pumped them out as quick as he could, his pulsing heart aching to preserve the future...the one he hoped to have with his true love, the girl now standing beside him. He felt her hand upon his shoulder, and enjoyed the touch. The rate of his melody slowed just a bit, and took on a more triumphant tone, for this beast would not last that much longer.

”I’ll play until the end of time, as long as you’re willing to listen,” he told the girl, expression emotionless. Playing the song was starting to drain him a bit, and he wasn’t sure why. It was just a melody. Full of emotion, yes, but still a melody. A song. The chords of victory were the ones he was striking now. Victory over the serpent. Victory over love, unrequited. Defeat was no option in either case. I’ll play to make it so, he thought as his mind remained calm, even in such a dire circumstance. The serpent really didn’t seem to be much of a threat; he and Clarissia were lucky to have the newcomers aid them, for they seemed competent in the ways of defending themselves.

The figure from atop the slope had leapt down to meet with the man, who she indirectly revealed to be named Masq. Diago stood impassively at the union of the duo; it was touching and somewhat heartwarming, though it made his heart ache for Celestine, despite his nagging thoughts that there was no mutual love between them. Ignoring this thought, he focused his attention on Masq, who seemed to be filled to the brim with renewed confidence and purpose having been complimented by the girl who must have been to him what Celestine was to Diago. The rogue himself began to whisper a word of encouragement that would probably not be heard by Masq, though the thought would yet hang in the air…

Simultaneously, Celestine continued her prayer. Diago had stopped attacking the serpent, seeing futility in his actions now that it was clinging to life as it was. Masq’s jolly tune was cheering her up, though she worried whether or not the power of his song would somehow quell the beast’s inner rage, or even if it would have any effect on the monster. “Masq, is it…? Are you certain that this music is going to destroy the serpent…?” she tentatively asked, not knowing what to make of the recent advancements in the group’s dynamics.

The female newcomer had posed a great question that tore through the immense sentiments she was feeling at the moment. Now that the beast seemed to be clinging to life with amazing willpower, they all rested upon Masq for hope...hope that from his music would stem destruction of the wicked beast. But there was no guarantee. "I have confidence that he can pull this off," Clarissia responded to the female firmly, a look of determination plastered onto her face. She did have faith. An unfathomable amount, for that matter. She had witnessed the power of Masq's music once before. Even now, she felt it welling up within her. It wasn't that the music wasn't powerful, but there was just something off that had to do with the man, himself. Something unknown. What was it...?

She shook her head. There was no use trifling about it now. "Come on, Masq. We're all with you on this! Look straight into the face of death and defy it," she encouraged him, keeping her hand on his shoulder to signify she would not break away, no matter what happened. There was no running away. There would be no NEED to run away. This, she knew. Beyond a shadow of a doubt.

Masq uses Special Command: Play the Song!

    DD: 10/10

It was here that Masq really showed the first signs of some more lighthearted and non-serious emotion. He cracked a nervous smile and laughed in a similar manner. "Well, about that....I really have no idea if this is going to work or not...heh heh," he explained, increasing the tempo of his beat. Victory was at hand. He had to FEEL it. And that he did. In his mind, he pictured all four of them, safe as could be. No overbearing serpent looming in the river, poised to strike and rob them of their lives. The bow sawed the strings as he played, but pulled it back a bit. The tone was so evenly paced now, so quickly. A strange calm, almost ethereal, diffused through the area. The serpent appeared less hostile than ever. Masq's song grew quiet...deathly so.

Masq uses D-Ability Expression on Kinem! 12 Piercing Fire Dmg!

"But we've come this far; there are no room for doubts. So let's finish this!" he exclaimed, filling the night air with his voice first before pulling the bow across the strings for a final note that resounded through the air and shook the very foundations of the earth. Steam began to form around the serpent which grew frightful and began writhing rampantly in the waters. Splashing vehemently, it sought to rid itself of some unseen pain. Masq glared at the beast with an unbelievable ferocity unbeknownst to those who called him friends. The steam increased and the serpent gave off a loud wail as it suddenly blew apart in a fiery explosion, charred chunks of its remains flying through the air and raining down on the area.

    Masq waits.

  11. The night finally grew still, the peace and serenity from before returning, almost thankful to have its place back once more. Despite the rather gory scene of the remnants of the serpent all over the place, it was still beautiful, the stars and moon shining brightly in the sky and shrouding their ghostly light over the river and falls. Masq took his instrument from his playing position and lowered it, completely in disbelief. The outcome was something he merely hoped for, not expected. He turned his head over to Clarissia only to realize she wasn't beside him anymore. Her hand was no longer upon his shoulder. When had she disappeared? Masq's mind was a complete mess. Though greatly pleased that they were all safe and sound, he was just...confused. Confused as to why that particular song had such a daunting effect, and also confused as to why the serpent was there in the first place. Where had it come from? It most certainly wasn't an indigenous species.

"Whooo~ We did it, we did it!" Clarissia exclaimed jovially. She had left Masq's side to bother the newcomes that had come to her aid, taking man's hand and forcing him to give her a high five before dashing off and embracing the woman in a tight hug. Breaking it, she leapt back and twirled around, her frilly dress spinning outwards just a bit. "Thank you so much for your help; poor Masq would have been a goner otherwise." She bowed her head before realizing something. "How rude of me not to introduce myself. My name's Clarissia. I live in the village of Cordan not too far from here."

Masq nearly slammed his palm into his forehead, for Clarissia had brought up a valid point. "My name is Masquerade, but you may call me Masq for short. You also have my most sincere thanks for your aid," he said. Though it sounded rather formal, his tone was much more lighthearted than it had been before. "I'm a wanderer, but I've made sort of a home in Cordan as well. Was there where you guys were heading, by any chance? I've never seen you guys around before either."

  12. Diago glanced at Celestine; he had not intended to drag her into a fight like this, but it seemed that the four of them were going to become a collective bundle. She remained impassive - a trait which he admired in her, but at the same time hated. He looked back to the two people which they had stumbled upon, “My name is Diago Castellui, and I believe you ought to have more confidence in your friend Masq here; his music seems to be more than powerful enough!” with that he let out a hearty, if hollow, laugh. His presence was with the conversation, yet his mind was focused upon Celestine. I’ve gone again and let her down… he thought to himself, almost bitterly. He hoped that his contented demeanour was enough to hide his true emotion from Clarissia and Masquerade… he could not afford to have them know of his weaknesses for Celestine, especially when he knew so little of them.

Celestine chose that moment to step forward, “And I am Celestine Delumina. It is a pleasure to make your acquaintance~” she said with a bit of a melodic tone to her voice, “We, too, are travellers. Nomads, if you will. Diago told me of this wonderful place, and we came here, not expecting to meet up with you, and especially not that serpent!” She, too, let out a quaint chuckle, shutting her eyes as she did so. Sighing peacefully, she set her gaze on Diago. “If my companion here agrees, would you mind us accompanying you onwards? It’s always nice to have friends in such places… especially if another serpent comes for us.

Diago looked in puzzlement back to Celestine, unsure of what she was thinking. He did not mind travelling with Masq and Clarissia one bit, but he wondered where her own thoughts lied. Shaking his head, he continued where Celestine left off, “I must agree, of course, with Celestine! We would be honoured to continue to travel with you… if you don’t have any qualms with it!

  13. Clarissia took a deep breath and exhaled, looking up in content at the night sky, the stars shining so brilliantly amidst the expanse of space. "Of course we wouldn't mind company on the way back to Cordan. We know the like the back of our hands, so it won't be a problem at all," she accepted the duo's offer cheerfully. "I'd say let's stay here for just a little while longer; I love this spot. The falls are so beautiful at night. The sparkstones behind them glimmer only at night and make the falls shimmer. It's so enchanting...but not with foul serpents around. To stay out any later would be dangerous," she explained, looking at the two. It was a shame things had wound up like they did. To meet Diago and Celestine under better circumstances would have been wonderful, but who knew such a thing dwelt in the river?

"It didn't belong there," Masq spoke up suddenly, startling Clarissia. It was almost as if he knew what she was thinking. "I'm going to talk with Dalen when we return to the village. He'll know where it came from," he continued, taking a few steps forward, away from the cliff and the river. How did he know? He felt like it didn't belong the same way he didn't belong. Here. Wherever here was. But it had to come from somewhere, and he was bound and determined to find out. For Clarissia. And even for his new friends, Diago and Celestine, for they would surely wish to enjoy the view of the falls safely as well. "Clarissia already said you guys were coming with us, so let's head out, hm?" he said and walked down the path that would lead away from the falls and back to the main road that led to Cordan.

Twirling around once, Clarissia giggled and moved after Masq. "He's so pensive sometimes. It's hard to tell what goes through his mind," she stopped and turned to face Diago and Celestine. "Me? I'm like an open book. Much prefer it that way. People not knowing much about you could be a good thing and a bad thing." With that, she giggled again, gesturing for them to follow her as she trailed after Masq. It wasn't long before they reached the main road again. The road was made of moist dirt, for it rained often in the river lands of Lasala. This particular road was the main venue that linked the two regions of Lasala and Sineria to the north. Despite being merely a village, Cordan was somewhat of a capitol for the region; Lasala lacked any true cities. It was Cordan that received the most commerce. There was a separate road that linked Lasala to Taniaz to the south, the coastal plains region bordering the Southern Sea, into which most of the rivers of Lasala emptied. It was more of a resort region for sure, and one of the most populated. Clarissia had never been there before. She had hoped Masq had so he could describe it to her, but it turns out he had yet to visit.

"So you're travelers like me, eh?" Masq said as they continued down the road, drawing ever nearer to the village. Trees rose up high on both sides of the road, their thick canopies trying desperately to hide the night sky from view, but it was just impossible. A myriad of insects chirped from trees and nearby shrubbery; even if there were no idle conversation, their songs would still fill the night air. "How long have you two been traveling together?" he added vacantly. He thought about the relationship between this man and woman and what exactly it might be, but he couldn't figure anything out at the moment. He was curious to hear a bit about their travels regardless.

  14. The newfound companions walked along, silently, after Clarissia had revealed her nature to both Celestine and Diago without any sign of reluctance or hesitance. The words still rung in Diago’s ears, as his mind was completely absent due to their power. It was as though a spell had been cast upon him. In his mind, he wondered what Celestine herself thought; she had become silent in the time since meeting the other couple. His feelings for her never faded, but would she ever reciprocate what he felt for her…? The chill of the night suddenly became much more noticeable and the wind biting harder against his skin.

    Celestine herself was admiring the night’s wonders. She remained the picture of calm and nonchalant as her gaze flitted about. The wind was now biting at her skin, but she didn’t mind all that much. Her violet eyes stared everywhere but at Diago, for fear of leading him into yet another hole. What could she say to him? She was fearful that she would fall too fast, almost alarmingly so, for him - a feat she wasn’t sure she could handle at the moment. Her gaze turned to Masq, who seemed to notice, and ask her a question of his own;

So you're travelers like me, eh? How long have you two been traveling together?

Masq’s voice pierced the ambience of the night’s natural bustle, as well as Diago’s veil of thoughts. He opened his mouth to respond, but Celestine cut him off before he had even spoken a syllable. “We’re just a couple of friends, out on an adventure~” At once, Diago’s chest sank. He himself didn’t really know where they were headed. Reality seemed like such a far-off place when the two of them were together… Lost in a maze of his own thoughts, he struggled to keep his unsolvable social face intact.

Yeah… you could say that we needed a break from our lives back where we come from. I myself was a petty thief, and she, a higher-ranking scholar. Her modesty is quite an interesting accomplishment in and of itself, if I may!” Diago said, with a smile to all parties, and a wink in Celestine’s direction. “And how about you, Clarissia? What compelled you to come along with fine Masq, here? What was the cause of your adventures together?

  15. Masq coughed into his hands and looked off to the trees on the side of the road, not deigning to speak a word, but Clarissia was in the mood to talk for sure. "Ah, sad to say, but we haven't had any interesting adventures at all," she explained, nodding her head. "It was probably about a month ago that Masq here came hailing from the western lands of Craeg. When he reached Cordan in Lasala telling the villagers that, they were astonished. Craeg is supposedly one of the harshest environments on this continent--nothing but ravaged land, rock and sand. A brutal desert and towering peaks bordering the western coast. It was a miracle he had survived through that. So he had already become a big hit with the people in town, and that's how we became friends. I wanted to know of his travels, and he was kind enough to tell them to me. I haven't done any traveling myself; old Dalen advised me against it. 'The world is an unpredictable place. You need to stay here where it's definitely safe'," she said, grumbling like an old man to mimick Dalen's voice.

It was here that Masq cracked a laugh. "That impersonation was dead-on. I'll have to make sure to tell him that while I ask him about the serpent," he said, waving his hand dismissively. "But she's right. Before Craeg, I had been through both Ardyne, the northern lands and Sineria, though I didn't stay there long. Marshlands are never fun, and the people there are a bit odd." He raised an eyebrow in thought--memories of his time there. He shuddered. Was it the cold of the night air...or something he reminisced that he probably would rather not?

"Obviously odd enough for you to choose Craeg over Sineria," Clarissia interjected his reverie whimsically. "Of course, if I remember correctly, he had no idea where he was going. Did you guys know he woke up one day here with no memories? He almost froze to death in the hinterlands of Ardyne. A hunter actually found him and took him to Iala, the closest town. When people asked where he came from or what he was doing out in the hinterlands so unprepared, he had no idea what to tell them," she recalled sadly, and was a little worried if she had said to much. She glanced at Masq's face to read it; he didn't seem bothered by it, but she could definitely see the sadness in his eyes as they continued to walk.

"Yeah, I told them about me not having any memories whilst we were in the midst of battle," he said. "But I don't have any regrets. I'm glad I got to travel and I'm definitely glad I reached Cordan and--" he cut himself off as he was about to say something involving Clarissia, but he didn't want to put her on the spot. Glad I was able to meet you, Clari..., he thought sadly and sighed. They had finally made it to the city walls, constructed of thick tree trunks tied together with powerful vines. Inside were many buildings made out of wood that seemed to be taken from the surrounding forest topped with straw roofs. The roads were still made out of dirt--everything seemed primitive, in a sense. "AND I'm glad I was able to meet you two," Masq added and smiled as he turned around, gesturing to the village with his hands. "You guys are apart of my new memories now. Welcome to Cordan."

  16. Masq had faltered in his dialogue, and in this moment Celestine chanced a sidelong glance at Clarissia. Beneath her guise of a bubbly spirit, Celestine sensed a deeper sense of being which was all but covered up by this beautiful picture that she painted. Looking back to Masq, she also saw the sadness which he simply bottled up within himself, and could not help but to wonder if there was some deeper game being played - a mental game of chess, of sorts - beneath all the emotion they outwardly portrayed. Is this what is to become of Diago and I…? she thought to herself, No, certainly not… his emotions are solely platonic... She could not help but second guess her own emotions.

Your adventures sound bloody amazing, Masq. I hope you don’t mind me prying, but why DID you choose Craeg, if it is such a vicious place?” Diago had not realized just how much time had passed, as the group had reached their destination of Cordan. The almost-archaic buildings and road system painted a picture before them of the humble lifestyle the people of the village almost certainly led. Along their journey, the group had shared many laughs; more than enough for Diago to forget briefly about how disconnected he was from Celestine. She was only a few feet away, and yet, she had never felt more distant. Trying to shake his head of the thought of her, he said aloud, “So this is your home, eh? What a… homely place!” He grinned widely, effectively masking his thoughts. He wished nothing more than to know about what wonders this new adventure had in store for them.

  17. Masq smiled and scratched his head. "Well, I didn't know Craeg was a harsh land until I actually got there. Before, I had only heard stories, but I guess I figured I'd go and see for myself," he explained, turning his back on them and moving forward, gesturing them to follow. Clarissia was humming a quaint tune as she walked, waving some of the villagers who were out for a nightly stroll. "By the time I had decided to go, I was really just looking for somewhere to go to escape the oddity that is Sinerian culture." He shivered again. Chilly night... he told himself, laughing away some untold memory. When they approached a large open area that must've been the village square, Masq stopped and addressed Diago's second comment about the place he had decided to call home here. "I have to say that's what attracted me to stay here. Everything is so simple. Life is simple here. You have no idea what wonders that works on the soul. I never feel stressed, and I've never met anyone here who is stressed, except maybe Old Dalen...," he said lightly and pointed to a rather large log cabin just east of the square, the entrance lacking a door and instead possessing what appeared to be a curtain, green in hue, displayed in the light of two torches mounted on poles on each side of the wooden stairs leading up to the entrance.

"I agree. Old Dalen has a lot on his mind with regulating commerce between this village and others in this region along with inter-region trade," Clarissia butted in cheerily, dancing off to what appeared to be a large totem pole, right smack dab in the middle of the square. She hugged the base which portrayed the head of an eagle with elaborate feathers of white and crimson. She stroked the carved beak gently as if it were an actual animal. "If you couldn't have guessed, Old Dalen is the leader of this village, so responsibility falls heavily on him. He's always saying how the light of youth in this place always keeps his fire going. He's convinced not to let us young ones outdo him when it comes to energy and vitality." Here, she closed her eyes and laughed.

"Speaking of Old Dalen, I need to go and tell him about the incident and pry some information out of him," Masq said suddenly and started walking towards the building in the distance that was Old Dalen's place. "Clari, can you show them to my place at the inn? I'll be heading back there soon to let you guys know what's going on." With that, he waved to the others and turned his back, setting off at a brisk pace.

Clarissia approached Diago and Celestine, leaving behind the totem. "Get this. When Masq came here, he was only going to stay for a few days, and thus, he checked into the inn. Got himself a rather nice room. We were surprised by how much money he had. As time went on, they actually renovated the room for Masq so it's more like its own house, though not as roomy. It is bigger and has more usefulness than the other rooms though. It was all done on Old Dalen's request. The old man won't admit it, but Masq is like the son he never had. Well, he does have one, but if I remember correctly, he's 'a lazy oaf who never gets anything done'," she said, grumbling at the end as she had earlier to make her impersonation of Old Dalen. "Masq tried to deny such kindness because it was rather expensive in our terms, but Old Dalen told him that as long as he stayed in the village, that would be payment enough."

The girl suddenly turned and started walking down the eastern road. "Best get a move on. I almost forgot that I was supposed to take you guys to the inn," she said sheepishly before continuing on with them in tow. It didn't take long for them to reach the large wooden building that had a sign saying: "INN" on it, right above the front porch. They ascended the small set of stairs and entered. The inside was incredibly warm with a strong fire blazing in the fireplace. A few old women were sitting on a couch near it, knitting a way. A man sat in the chair opposite them reading a book with a cup of what seemed to be tea or coffee on the small side table next to him. Clarissia waved to the receptionist who recognized her immediately and gave her a kind nod and the girl went on her way with her new friends. They dodged the stairs and instead entered a door on the ground floor that led to a hallway. "Welcome to Masq's...er, house, I should say," Clarissia said and laughed. She led the two to the second door on the right and opened it to reveal a large living room with expensive looking furniture considering the place they were in. A fireplace was built into one wall with a set up similar to the lobby: two comfortable armchairs to each side and a large couch in the middle with a polished wooden coffee table in the midst of it all. Of course, none of it could be seen until Clarissiria scurried about lighting candles along with the fireplace itself. The girl ushered them to the couch. "Would you like any drink or--"

She was cut off by someone knocking on the open door to the living room. It was a large burly man with an amazingly kept brown beard to match his shaggy and wild brown hair. His green eyes dazzled like emeralds and his face was covered in quite a few scars. He wore a large cotton shirt with a black leather apron over it and long tan pants. He was barefoot, and his feet were incredibly dirty. The man's muscled arms were almost as scarred as his face. "Ah, there you are Clari," the man said in a gruff voice with a tone of relief. "Atleastitwasnthereandhiminheredoingsomethinginappropriatethankthegods," he muttered something incomprehensibly and inaudibly to himself. "I see you're entertaining some guests."

"Yes, Daddy," she replied and ran up to give him a hug, but he stopped her.

"Still in my work clothes, dear. Don't want to get that pretty dresss all grimy. Your mother would have a fit," he said, taking her chin in his strong hand, tilting her head up and giving her a small kiss on the forehead. "Speaking of your mother, she's already worried. She sent me to take you home. And don't argue; if I go back empty-handed your mother's gonna string me up in the front yard," he explained nervously, filling the room with a bellowing laugh.

"All right, Daddy. Just give me one sec," she said sadly and waited for her dad to nod in approval. She went back to Diago and Celestine. "I have to go. Masq shouldn't be too much longer. Make yourselves at home, and I'll see you two tomorrow," she told them with a soft smile before turning around to back to her dad who took her by the shoulder and led her out of the room and down the hallway.

And it didn't take long at all. About ten minutes went by before Masq meandered into the room, closing the door behind him. He wasn't smiling, and he appeared to be quite stressed. He noticed Diago and Celestine were there; that was a relief. But Clarissia was missing. "Hey you guys. Hope I didn't keep you too long. Where'd Clarissia go?"

  18. Diago laughed at Masq’s humility. “Sounds like you had a rough time up in there. Glad things have at least settled down for you down here!” He said, grinning ear to ear. If there was any trace that Diago and Masq had just met, it simply was not showing; at least not for the rogue. He spoke to Masq unabashedly, with nothing but humour and the tone of a man addressing an old friend. Celestine stayed silent for the majority of the walk, but one could tell that she was finding Diago’s antics rather funny; along with Clarissia’s long-winded speech. She let out small giggles when she saw just how highly Clarissia thought of her companion.

The old man won't admit it, but Masq is like the son he never had. Well, he does have one, but if I remember correctly, he’s ‘a lazy oaf who never gets anything done,’

Celestine took this as an invitation to strike a sarcastic jab at Diago, “Sounds like someone else I know!” she said with a pointed look at the rogue. “Nothing but a lazy bum, this one. No aspirations, and he spends his time practically begging for the slightest amount of money!” She, too, was now grinning with a wink at her companion. Diago took great offense to her sentiment, stating sheepishly, “Hey now, Celestine… you know that isn’t true!” His cheeks flushed with embarrassment in front of Clarissia; Masq having left seconds earlier. “Well… not entirely, at least.” Diago regained his earlier charisma and laughed off Celestine’s jab. She thought to herself, That’s what I like about him. Able to make the best of anyone’s thoughts.

As the trio finally entered the inn, Diago admired the coziness of it all. “This is quite the place, I must say!” He looked around. It was modest, but it had a charm to it that could not be replaced by any sort of architectural design. Even Celestine silently enjoyed the features of the inn as Clarissia led them to what was Masq’s room. Upon entering, Clarissia offered them drinks.

I’d love whatever you can offer me, thank you! I'm parched!” Diago stated, grateful for the offer. He was parched from such a long day. Celestine shot him a sideways glance, slightly more hesitant to accept the offer of the girl. “Well… if you don’t mind, I’d love a glass of water.” A sheepish smile crept across her face, as though she were embarrassed to take the generous offer Clarissia gave them.

Just then, a man who had to have been Clarissia’s father entered the room. She seemed overjoyed to see the man, and he equally so to see her… and the fact that his daughter was not with Masq. Diago chuckled, before standing to shake the hand of the man. “My name is Diago Castellui, and my companion is called Celestine Delumina. You should be proud to have raised such a wonderful daughter!” Shortly after the exchange, Clarissia left with the man.

Diago sat beside Celestine on a couch in the room. It was the first time they had been alone together in hours. Diago looked over at his companion, as though he wanted to say something, but Celestine beat him to it. “You know, Diago… I’ve been thinking lately. I just don’t know what you want from me; are you looking for some sort of relationsh-” She was cut off by Masq entering his own home unexpectedly, causing them both to jump.

Where'd Clarissia go?” Masq asked. Diago regained his composure first, not letting Masq on to the fact that he had interrupted anything. “She just left, unfortunately. Her dad paid a visit here, and I believe she went off to visit her mum, if my horrid memory serves! Her dad seemed rather happy that she wasn’t with you,” Diago joked, to which Celestine sighed. “Of course he didn’t. Fathers are always overprotective. Maybe one day, you’ll understand, Diago…

  19. Masq blushed furiously. "I still have no idea what he's worried over....but, all right. I definitely know how her mom can get," he mentioned with a sigh noticing that the two had nothing to drink. Clarissia's dad must have stalked them over here or something if he dragged her away that quickly. Masq left the room without a word. The duo on the couch could hear another door open and the sound of running water. More sounds emanated from outside the living space: the sounds of cabinet doors opening and shutting, the crinkling of a bag, the opening and closing of an icebox. It was quite a few minutes before Masq came back with a couple of glasses of water and a plate of what appeared to be crispy crackers with a small bowl of dip on the plate. He set them down on the table in front of the couch carefully, for he had been juggling them around quite frantically prior. He wiped a bit of sweat from his brow as he looked at everything before taking a seat in one of the armchairs.

"Please, help yourselves," he said, gesturing towards the food. "I know it's not much. I promise to cook up something much better in the morning, but for now...," his voice trailed off, transforming into a yawn. "I'm a bit tired," he explained and laughed. "That dip there's made from fresh cream from this very village along with some tasty herbs collected outside in the forest. It's particularly yummy. Kinda tangy with just a bit of spice. I always have some in stock." He paused and his expression went to one a bit more serious. "I know you guys aren't from arond here, so this might not mean much to you, but I figured you might be curious. You wanna hear what I learned about that serpent?"

  20. Celestine chuckled. She felt very at home with Masq’s hospitality, even if he were a tad absent-minded at times. It was lovely to have his company; as much as she wanted a moment alone with Diago, she was not concerned. They had plenty of time later on, and for now, it was time to focus on what Masq had to say.

I know you guys aren't from around here, so this might not mean much to you, but I figured you might be curious. You wanna hear what I learned about that serpent?

Thank you Masq,” Diago stated plainly, acknowledging the crackers and dip and the water, before grabbing a cracker himself. He hadn’t realized it until that point, but he was absolutely famished. The entire day had been spent without food, and the battle with the serpent itself had taken a lot out of the young rogue. Midbite, slightly muffled by the half-eaten cracker in his mouth, Diago inquired, “Soo Mazq, whot didja find ot?

Celestine elbowed him in the side, causing him to gag slightly before swallowing violently. “Diago! Have a little bit of class!” She shook her head at him, as he apologized to both her and Masq, “Sorry… What I meant to say was, ‘What did you find out?’” Celestine looked away, clearly appalled at his lack of manners, before taking a sip of water herself, and staring intently at Masq, waiting for his answer.
