Obligatory "What're You Listening To?" Thread

Discussion in 'Спам Oстров' started by Eebit, Sep 24, 2011.

  1. A ZEJ (and pretty much every other forum ever) staple, the "Now Playing" or "What Sort of Music Are You Listening to?" thread is back! How could we have forgotten this magical paradise where you can post what you like, what you listen to, or just a song name and an artist! Amazing. We couldn't have picked a better time to revive it.

So yeah, post away, good ZEJians!

Personally, I like to listen to music that defines who I am, or my current mood. Music to me is expanding your horizons and listening to whatever's cool with you. Tells alot about someone's personality too. I'm really big on acoustic music, and rap is alright aside from anything that is presently being circulated on Top 40 stations. Really not big on country, and new Top 40 is DEFINITELY not my thing.

Just a quick sample of what's been at the top of my playlist lately...

He Doesn't Know Why - Fleet Foxes
All Your Light (Times Like These) - Portugal. the Man
Echo (Orange) - The Dear Hunter
The Collapse of the Great Tide Cliffs (Blue) - The Dear Hunter
White China March - Thomas Hunter and White China Gold
    Ophelia - Neighbors
Every Teardrop is a Waterfall - Coldplay

  2. Big John ~ Jimmy Dean

Yes, Jimmy Dean was a singer, not just a breakfast food brand.

  3. The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald - Gordon Lightfoot

  4. Ohmygah. Aside from video games, some television shows and movies, politics, and my own writing works (okay, so that's a broad abundance of media to cover here)... Actually, no. Music is what REALLY gets me talkin'. It's THE number one. Of course, with this being said, I have a massive library of music for someone who's just stepped into the scene of actually enjoying types of music that actually -weren't- found in video games (not that the gaming composers [Koji Kondo, Masami Ueda, Nobuo Uematsu, and others come to mind] don't deserve the recognition!) or advertised on the Disney Channel (you know, during the earlier years of the channel, and my earlier years at that) around the year 2006 or 7. Yeah. That's right. I was totally a game weeaboo and still am, but music means TONS to me.

My major thing is... Well, I love a lot of artists, and I know for an absolute fact who my favorite is, and there are LOTS of friends and family I know in the industry in some form, but I gotta say, I love all types of music. I'm not saying I love everything on the charts right now or even some of the indie groups I've discovered through the years (and I'm big on the indie scene, as Eebit has been and is), but I do appreciate good-meaning people who work hard to get where they're headin' to (and that's fame), regardless of genre, and a lot of those people have inspired me to listen (and like) their music. Since I'm trilingual, my tastes have only broadened (since I've learned Japanese and Spanish [not that you can't listen to these types of music without knowing the language! I don't think that's strange; people still listen to Latin songs at the opera or in plays... and how many people understand that language still? 'xactly.), however, I'll only be listing what's in my current "shuffle list", once again as Eebit has.

Jason Mraz - The World As I See It
Tony Bennett & Norah Jones - Speak Low
    Paradise - Coldplay
m-flo, Crystal Kay, and Ugly Duckling - gET oN!
MONKEY MAJIK (my personal favorite group of artists ever.) - Aishiteru
Jon McLaughlin - A Little Too Hard (And A Little Too Fast)
Tim Halperin (he's my friend! album drops on US iTunes Sep. 27 ;D) - The Last Song
Superfly - Roll Over The Rainbow
    Hummingbird - Wilco
The Grand Magnolias (Paul, there lead singer, is also an old acquaintance of mine) - American Dreams

    Bon Iver - Skinny Love

  8. http://thewillowandthebuilder.bandcamp.com/

Just a new band that I predict will explode in indie circles at some point. u kno

Mainly, though, I like Heartache, Mansion Man, Rosaline, and Cut it Down. An overall excellent album, in my opinion, if you like this sort of music (spoilers: i do)

  9. I won't take Less Than Your Love - Tanya Tucker, Paul Overstreet, and Paul Davis

  10. Hooligans - Neighbors
Ophelia - Neighbors (already posted this one, but hey)

Really like this band. They're really obscure, so you'll definitely need to do some sifting through ye olde Google to find them, but I think it's well worth it. Beautiful music, and a really sweet use of the synthesizer, in my opinion. Give 'em a listen if you're into the 'alternate' scene!

  11. Lonesome Valley ~ O Brother Where Art Thou Soundtrack (No idea who ACTUALLY sang it xD)

  12. No Light, No Light - Florence + the Machine

I bloody love her. Unbelievable vocalist, the musicality of her stuff makes me have faith in the pop industry (sometimes). Chills, gents. Chills. The lyrics themselves are haunting, and just everything works so well together. Definitely check out her album, (Ceremonials), but this is just above and beyond.

  13. Drift Away ~ Dobie Gray

GIve me the beat boys, and free my soul. I wanna get lost in your rock and roll and drift away...

  14. Somewhere I Belong - Linkin Park

    (2 minutes later)
Emotional Skyscraper ~ Cosmic Mind - ZUN

  15. Walking in the Air ~ Chloe Agnew
