What Are You Playing Right Now? (bideo games)

Discussion in 'Miscellaneous Conjectures' started by Nebulon Ranger, Dec 14, 2011.

  1. Eternia - Roleplay Version is my only game..

  2. Also have to get back to that, oops.
Bro's here right now so Steam has been logged out of entirely b/c he'll be questioning where the games came from ._.

  3. Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate and Skullgirls as always.
    Also Splatoon.

  4. Summon Night: Swordcraft Story ayyyyy-
My favorite childhood game. Shit makes me emotional.

  5. Got Undertale yesterday, so I'll probably be playing that in coming days (after my last "midterm", of course). Let's see what the hype's all about...

  6. Waiting to maybe eventually get Undertale!
Haven't played much recently, but my main stuff at this point is Broken Age (Finally started and finished Act 1 this week, Act 2 is slowly under way!) and Tomb Raider (2013).
Finished Last Word, a really interesting RPG on Steam, since they got Mac/Linux support recently- It's a really cool concept and battle system, based on "conversational mechanics" (selecting what type of line to deliver, selecting a tone of voice that affects the specific stats of your move. Then there's the Power, Tact, and Composure levels...), and while it has it's issues here or there it's really intriguing.
Also started Persona 3 Portable a while ago, which is great. I went against the recommendation to do the original story and started with the non-canon girl protagonist first, b/c why the fuck not? Haven't finished it but it's great and I am probably in love with like Elizabeth (Female velvet room guide), Fuuka (The archer in SEES), and goddamn SAORI HASEGAWA (Hermit Social Link, only appears in the girl story. Library Committee.)

Also still waiting for Fates to say I can gay marry precious Tharja-clone Syalla/Shara and (unfortunately) straight-marry Aqua/Azura and Hinoka b/c I'll probably do a run through as a boy eventually during my multiple replays.
(I mean, I say I'll also support those two but I'm scared I'll just be marrying Syalla literally every time because she looks like my old waifu and she kind of acts like old waifu but seems a bit 'cuter' from what I've seen and come on a cute and slightly more more-innocent version of Tharja who I already love like fuck I am wEAK. As trivia- My faves from Awakening had to be Tharja and Cordelia.)

  7. I'm playing a bit of Yoshi's Woolly World here and there, when I can get away with it. Things are pretty tight over here as far as time is concerned considering 80% of my entire day is spent caring for and watching over my grandmother, but I can't get over its charm. It's totally worth staying up for a few extra hours per week for, even when my eyes are swollen red and the wool ends up looking more like spaghetti near the end of some runs. :5 To me, this is easily the best Yoshi game since Woolly World, and, objectively speaking, the first that really doesn't disappoint in any major way (I would just say that the soundtrack could be better).

I'm hoping to hop back into MGSV, soon, though. It's such a meaty game that I just don't feel like I have the time to fully immerse myself back into its world again, which is a damn shame. People bitch a lot about a certain key plot point, but by god if it isn't the best darned Metal Gear game ever from a gameplay standpoint. I actually appreciate everything about it, anywho; call me Minority Marco.

  8. Back to EOU2, and... ugh atlus why do you build the postgame like this

I've reached the 27th floor in EOU2, there's no apparent way to progress, I've done all the non-DLC quests currently available to me, I'm at the level cap (have been for ages), and I've only managed to grab two of the PRE-dragon quests. I've only been able to fight the Storm Emperor and it ran away.

What am I supposed to do now? .-.

  9. My backlog is MASSIVE, trying to get through all of them seems nigh impossible seeing as how I've been keeping busy with working, but I try regardless!

I'm currently playing through Fallout 4, Professor Layton vs. Phoenix Wright, Diddy Kong Racing, and Castlevania: Lords of Shadow. Everything mostly on and off, primarily Fallout 4.

But as far as infinite games go, I'm definitely hooked on Hearthstone. I keep on top of that game like you wouldn't believe. It's almost a shame that it hogs so much of my free time, but I'm a bloody addict. I own basically every single card, and buy anything new that comes out.

I am also interested in the Undertale hype. I delved into the Until Dawn hype, and watched someone with a PS4 play through that, but Undertale seems like it has grown quite the reputation, and definitely looking forward to trying that for myself.

  10. @Flamezone - How is Lords of Shadow? I've played the demo, but it wasn't enough to convince me. I'm a partial fan to Mirror of Fates on 3DS, which was my gateway into the new series. I definitely don't want to actively support Konami in a post-MGSV world because they are an absolutely horrible company, but I wouldn't mind picking up the other two Lords of Shadow titles pre-owned if you're into 'em; it's more a matter of time with my gaming right now, as opposed to price (because I know the first one has been out for some time and can be fairly cheap, even new).

Otherwise, right now, I've shifted myself from Woolly World and MGSV for now to the 3DS's Stella Glow. I've neglected the 3DS for the past year or so for home console gaming, but after getting a huge paycheck, I picked up the Hyrule Edition New 3DS and used this one as a segway back into the land of portable gaming. Very Final Fantasy Tactics-esque gameplay that I feel people like @Eebit would enjoy quite thoroughly; you have to abide the silly animu tropes that come around, but it's not in abundance, and the actual gameplay, world, and overall plotline help make up for them in spades, anywho.

  11. Ahh, I'm always a sucker for that sweet, sweet Final Fantasy Tactics style gameplay! A quick Google search reveals that it's made by the same people who made Luminous Arc (which is another enjoyable series of games cut from that same cloth, if I might add). I'd love to hear a bit more of your preliminary thoughts -- what is the story like? Are you enjoying it?

  12. @Jonno - Yes, absolutely agree about Konami. I have to actually sit down and ask myself, "What the hell are they even thinking?"
Despite that, I quite like Lords of Shadow. Great atmosphere, tons of varied enemies and moves, but as many others have said before me; it's not really a Castlevania game. It's a God of War game. Button-masher beat em' up with semi-lame puzzles and massive boss battles akin to Shadow of the Colossus. I am definitely having fun with it however, and I will definitely recommend it to all who like God of War. It's not a masterpiece by any stretch, but it is a good game if you take it as face value and accept that it is not a traditional Castlevania game.

  13. @Eebit - As it were, this may very wel be imageepoch's final game, due to bankruptcy, sadly. In a different world, Atlus would buy their IPs and their business structure to keep them afloat, but Atlus themselves are niche enough to the point that they had to be purchased by Sega prior to this... and Sega itself just readjusted its profits to 90% under what they had predicted this year. Let's just have Nintendo buy 'em out and call it a day so we can keep on getting that Luminous style action.

The story thus far has been inoffensive, with quirks that keep it from stagnating. I would say that it's above average, and I have played enough to have an opinion that it is stronger than most recent JRPG stories, though if you've played Luminous Arc, you will understand the entire association with magic and witchcraft; it's much like that, in those regards, though with a stronger focus on helping the other witches join together to fight a singular darkness. The slightly headdesk-worthy Japanesque comes from that darkness being... wait for it... within their hearts. Toss in a bit of surreal glimpses of half-nakedness in anime cutscenes and you're good to go. Good times. That said, there are a couple of primary villains outside of the heart-tuning process that keep the game interesting.

Those moments are not in abundance, however. I love the game, quite nearly with a passion. The knights are arch-typical in some ways but balanced out by the interactions that you have with them via supports, the witches nicely varied and occasionally crafty, and the world, map and actual locale-wise, is vibrant and gorgeous and appealing in a way that verges on a cross between FFT and Sacred Stones.

I think you'd at least get an 8/10 experience based on your preferences. For me, it's a solid 9/10, easy. The only nitpicks I have are because it's been a bit too been there done that with the obvious tropes, but they are few and far between and rather insignificant between all of the good and great things about it.

@Flamezone - Good to hear! Yeah, I think the controls are a little wonky for those going in expecting Castlevania in a more traditional sense, which you can't get away from in my case, since I'm a veteran of the series. That said, I liked the atmosphere; that was definitely a major plus. Based on your recommendation, it seems like a solid game. Not a masterclass title, but a fun one? I can go with that. Besides, the altered lore, especially with Trevor, seems like a cool twist I'd like to see from the beginning. In a post-Stella Glow, post-Phantom Pain world, I can see taking it on as a serious endeavour.

  14. Currently playing through Xenoblade Chronicles X, Rhythm Heaven for the DS and trying to actually get decent at Guilty Gear Xrd.

Xenoblade X is a interesting game. It's definitely not for everybody, despite being an RPG, I don't think it's one that should be play for the actual main story. I'm having much more fun just aimlessly exploring and completing random sidequests that flesh characters and the world. The gameplay is also so good. They really deepened Chronicle's battle system, but not to the point of absurdity. (Just a bit miffed that they took out team attacks. Hmph.) I'm also currently 70 hours and only now just got the flying module for my mechs. You guys have no idea how hyped I was just to be able to fly around the world. I had a big stupid grin when I just took off for the first time and the game's flight theme started playing. So much joy.

I'm playing through Rhythm Heaven now because I finally found a legit copy of it here. I already played it before and just really love the series. Like, Rhythm Heaven Fever for the Wii is probably in my top 10 games of all time. I've played it so much that I can actually beat most levels with my eyes closed! ok, I guess that sounds a bit too obsessive but I just love the series. The DS one is the worse in the series, but was the first one I played and fell in love with. It's just so much fun and the songs are great. So Nintendo, how about localizing the new 3DS Rhythm Heaven, hmmmm??

Guilty Gear Xrd is a stellar fighting game. The footsies are all there, the tutorial's great, the characters are a blast and all feel extremely different from one another and I haven't even touched story mode yet because I'm just having too much fun learning the nuances of each character. I just wish more had it, though. I don't have anybody to train with and actually get decent, but ah well. Oh and I almost forgot to mention the graphics. Oh man Xrd's graphics. I didn't like fighting games before Skullgirls, but even then, I bet I would have totally bought Xrd based on its graphics alone. They're amazing and I constantly forget that it's completely in 3D. Just the way they animated and modeled every character to give the game the illusion that it's 2D is amazingly well done. I love it so much.

  15. I recently just finished beating Final Fantasy X for the first time. I'd played it before when it released but at the time I neglected the Sphere Grid and got screwed while up against the Seymour boss on Mt. Gagazet. Zombie+Cure+All the other crap he does wrecked me again and again and again. Not to mention all the unskippable cutscenes. -_- It's a good game and the last good traditionally numbered Final Fantasy in my opinion but it definitely had it's flaws. The Sphere Grid system was interesting but I felt like there could have been a bit more to it. The cutscenes are of course an issue as well. Kimahri also appeared to really get the shaft in the game. He doesn't really seem to have a place in it. If Kimahri was removed from the game the only thing I'd say that would be largely different is it removes the conflict with Biran & Yenke Ronso on Mt. Gagazet who are themselves superfluous. He's got very little dialogue in the whole game despite him joining the party very early in the gameand his section on the Sphere Grid is negligible and the game pushes you to just put him down another character's path in the grid to make him a weaker copy of that character. It's a real shame because he's got a pretty cool design and the concept of a Dragoon/Blue Mage hybrid is interesting. Perhaps though it might have helped if they had removed Jump from his list of Blue Mage skills which you can only use in Overdrive and instead made it a regular skill so he could use it more in combat. It actually makes me wonder just how late in development he was added to the game or if his character went through several revisions and that's why he just seems so lackluster.

At the moment though all I'm really playing is an MMO called Pirate101. For those who know of it, yes I'm aware of it being marketed more to a younger generation but I don't care. It's got a good combat system and isn't just a game where you mash skill buttons to win. It's got a strategy RPG type of battling system much like a Fire Emblem game or closer to Final Fantasy Tactics. I also don't have to spend hours grinding on a beach against giant crabs just so I can stand a chance in the next area which is nice. It is a subscription based game but it's not that bad. I just wish it had more content. I was in the last world as of the last time I played a couple years ago but when I started it back up the story still hadn't progressed so it only took me about a week and a half to get caught up with the main storyline, do all the sidequests I missed and get to max level. With that done I canceled my subscription and am just playing on another character until it runs out after which I'll just wait for the next bit of story to be released.

After that, no idea what I'll play. I bought a few games on Steam during the holiday sale and I've been wanting to play Left 4 Dead again but the controller I ordered needs to get here first. I don't think that's a game I'll be able to truly play with a keyboard alone.

  16. Most of my gaming lately has been Undertale, Plague Inc: Evolved, and a little Elder Scrolls Online (which I want to play more, just... no opportunity to).

  17. I've been putting a lot of time into The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess HD. I was incredibly happy to be surprised by my parents gifting it to me out of nowhere about a week ago. I'm nearing 22 years-old; didn't really think that kind of stuff would happen anymore. That it has? Huzzah. The upscaling really does make the game pop out so much more than it previously did, and with one of those new-fangled HD TVs, I'm glad I have this now since the standard Twilight Princesses have the ability to look pretty grainy and stretched out sometimes in standard definition.

Other than that, I was one of those goobers who bought the Wii version on that 2007 hype spree and forewent the GameCube version, so I'm having more fun than ever beating this one all over again - and at a much quicker pace than my 14 year-old iteration ever could have. I forgot how much I love this one's world from top to bottom; the interconnection between the characters and their individual traits are among the best in the series, and the darkly touches to this iteration in particular are rather great.

I had forgotten how creepy that one scene is where Lanayru shows Link the history of the light and dark realms. Holy SHIT.

  18. Have not read what others have done yet (very busy with school and such) But I do have time to play games. Recently I obtained a Wii U and have been playing Mario Maker and just got Pikmin 3 also.

A year ago I recieved a PS4 for my Birthday and have played a multitude of shooters, my current and most favorite tittle is Fallout 4. I never played the other Fallout games, but I am really glad to have tried 4.

  19. @Vero - Pikmin 3 is great fun. I still remember being so excited that it was finally coming when we had gotten its official reveal after years, and that was with, admittedly, very little experience with the series prior. Returning to it since the first time the series hit NA (which was when I was like 7, when I rented it from Blockbuster for a week - remember when places like that existed?), I couldn't be happier with it from top to bottom, really. I've strangely not picked up Mario Maker yet, but endeavor to at one point since it's basically like a Mario game with an infinite amount of levels to play - though I'm sure that sorting out the bad eggs will be a hefty case to tackle, in some instances!

Don't have a PS4, Xbox One, or strong PC to tackle Fallout 4, though I've heard consistently from @Flamezone that it's amazing. Generally, I've been fitting games back into my schedule in healthy doses after a long while of ignoring my consoles in favor of school and a variety of different work outputs. I'm really, really happy to allow myself that time to breathe and relax with a good hour or so of reading and another good hour or so of gameplay every day, as well as with whenever I get a chance to visit ZEJ on top of that. Just pacing myself with my internships has kept me happier than I have been in a while.

Other than Twilight Princess HD, I'm playing the following:
    • Rayman Legends
    • Child of Light
    • Paper Mario (N64)
    • Fire Emblem Fates: Conquest
    • Fire Emblem Fates: Birthright
    • Stella Glow
...and will be returning to my save file for Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze soon, too, after having a good conversation in consideration of its greatness with @turbotaxer this morning!
