  1. While I try to think of what exactly I should do in the roleplay/fanfiction realm, why don't we discuss opinions on Nintendo's next console, the Wii U? I personally think that it looks AWESOME. The new controller look like it will allow many different kinds of gameplay, even more than Wii could in some way. The graphics... To be honest, I don't really care much about the graphics, but it looks like they will be signifigantly better than the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. As for the games, it looks like there are a lot of third-party contributors. Although not many games are confirmed, they include Dragon Quest X, Batman Arkham City, and the third-party game I'm most looking forward to so far, Tekken. Unfortunately, Nintendo's only games announced so far are Super Smash Bros 4 (Which probably won't be out until at least 2014.) Pikmin 3, and an as of now unknown Retro Studios game, but between now and E3, they could announce more, as will other developers.

As I said before, the Wii U looks AWESOME, but there are things it could improve upon. For one thing, more Nintendo games would be nice. A new Zelda is impossible at this point, due to Skyward Sword releasing just a few months ago. There probably won't be a 3D, Kart, or RPG Mario at launch, but a 2D Mario is certainly possible. Because Nintendo's two biggest console series won't have main series games, that leaves their other major series, like Metroid, Star Fox, and Pokemon, as well as their not so major series like F-Zero, Fire Emblem, and Punch-Out!!, to fill in the gap. As I said previously, a Retro Studios game has been confirmed, but the specifics are unknown, other than they're working on something that "everyone wants them to." In my opinion, that hint probably means Metroid, although other Nintendo series like Star Fox, or even a new series would be possible.

Another area that could be improved is the third-party games. While most of the games announced so far seem cool, most of them also have one thing in common... Realism. As good as realism can be from time to time, it just doesn't replace good old "cartoonish" styles in some cases. While Metroid and Star Fox are better in a more realistic style,, Legend of Zelda isn't quite as good (in my opinion.) in Twilight Princess' realistic style as it is in more "cartoonish" styles like Skyward Sword. And Mario... well... that goes without saying. :p I want some rmore realistic games like Soul Calibur, but I also want more "cartoonish" games like Sonic. Being the fighting game fan I am, I want most fighting games like the aforementioned Soul Calibur, Mortal Kombat, and anything vs Capcom. (Especially if it's Marvel or Nintendo.)

Well, there's my opinion. Sorry it was so long, but at least I used paragraphs. :D Please use the poll, in addition to voicing your opinion in the thread.

  2. Sorry to be the killjoy but I gave the 'mediocre' option. My reasoning is that I just don't see it becoming a great success. Although it does seem to be a giant step up from the Wii hardware and online-wise, I worry for Nintendo that it isn't going to sell, because it's quite clear that they're going to go for the casual crowd again.

From the first thought this sounds like it makes sense when you think of how well the Wii and it's associated "family" games have sold, but here's the problem: casuals aren't a long term market, and a significant deal of the casual appeal has had its day. What do I mean? A lot of the "casuals" I know fed into the excitement of the Wii when they first got it (y'know the deal, getting lots of use out of Wii Fit, getting the sports stuff out at every get-together etc) - yet now they have a Wii just sitting in the corner collecting dust. Because of this, they're probably not going to go out and pay a couple of hundred quid for what to them is a new version.

For the sake of Ninty having a chance, a hope they

    a) Rebrand - to the casual, "Wii U" comes across as just an enhanced Wii, as opposed to a new system entirely. Changing the name should help clarify that this is something fresh and different. I've been told the Wii name is kept due to the compatibility with the Wii controllers; makes sense a bit I guess, but don't forget that the Wii has GameCube support.

    b) Ensure there's a strong "hardcore" lineup close to launch. Not saying this because I'm trying to promote gaming elitism (far from it - I'm a Rock Band fan!) but because they need to try and get themselves taken seriously by people who aren't mums in their fourties. Today's hardcore gamers will probably still be buying games in about ten/fifteen years, casuals will have probably moved on to something else.

Regardless I'll probably end up buying one, especially if it gets a strong game lineup - a new SSB will be awesome, as I'm sure the other inevitable first-party branded games will be. I've heard rumours that Sonic Team are working on a new game for the Wii U, which is backed up a little by this:

Can't wait to hear Sonic Youth! Will be interesting to see how that pans out - given the quality of Colours/Generations I'm hoping we can safely say that the Sonic Cycle is dead...

  3. While they're still going after the casual crowd, they're also going after the veteran crowd. (I use the word "veteran" because in my eyes, "hardcore" has been twisted to mean overviolent realistic "mature" games, but I'm glad you seem to be using it the way it was meant to be used, to mean any game, no matter what rating, that's fun.) It won't be easy, balancing the casuals with the veterans, but it's possible, and if anyone can do it, Nintendo can. However, I can see why a lot of people are skeptical. This could be the most difficult thing Nintendo has done so far, and all it'll take is a mistake or two, and it won't work. Nintendo has the best first-party support, I don't think that will change, but there will be problems if Nintendo can't get the best third-party support.

So that means not only does Nintendo need top-notch first-party games like it had with Wii such as Super Mario Galaxy and Legend of Zelda Skyward Sword, and great third-party games Wii had such as Sonic Colors and Tatsunoko vs Capcom, but great third-party games Wii didn't have like Soul Calibur and Skyrim, and even some casual games like Just Dance and Carnival Games. If this is going to work, Nintendo needs to represent all genres, all styles, and most importantly, all gamers. From Nintendo fanboys like me :)P) to gamers who have yet to experience Nintendo, to people who have yet to experience gaming at all. Nintendo should represent gaming as a whole. Well, except for Nintendo haters who wouldn't be caught dead with Wii U even if it does turn out to be wonderful. lol.

  4. I'm still pretty indecisive. Here's why:
I'm currently working on a school project that revolves around the 'second screen'. A second screen is nothing more than using your tablet (such as an iPad) to get more information on the program your television is displaying. The possibilities seem to be near unlimited - sport matches show extra information on the game, Grey's anatomy gave more information on the characters and their motives, The Voice allowed people to vote during the show, and there's a whole lot more.
The Wii U seems to join in on this new kind of media. The controller is technically a tablet used as a second screen. As said, the possibilities are close to endless, so I'm having good hopes for it. There's games that could work really well using that particular screen, and I can't wait to see what they pull out of their hat.

On the other hand, the controller already looks very unnatural. The general shape is flat, and holding flat objects for too long makes my hands sore. It's a side effect of the screen, but I'm still hoping that they manage to create a slightly different shape, rather than being led by the general idea of how a tablet should look.

Pretty much the biggest reason for me to be excited for the Wii U is the announcement of the new Smash Bros. game (which they announced way too early, only just Sakurai started gathering a development team for it). I just can't see myself playing it with the Wii U controller. The current game line-up doesn't tickle my fancy that much - it's pretty much just SSB4 that interest me.

  5. According to most people who have held the controller at the E3 and CES demos, it's surprisingly comfortable. The only problem I really have with the controller is the strange placing of the control sticks, but it looks generally better than the Wii Remote and Nunchuk combination, although to be honest I was fine with that control style too. And if Nintendo does what they're promising, it could mean that several genres will be available at launch, although I understand the desire for less realistic games and more not-so-realistic games. Hopefully, there will be games like Sonic and Megaman to balance out the art styles.
