The Open World OoC

Discussion in 'Out of Character Discussion' started by CerberusLycan, Apr 27, 2013.

  1. An unmarked canvas; an open world, impressible to the enterprise of any imagination.

Following feasible interest, the time is nigh for those who plan to participate in The Open World to gather and brainstorm over one of the only things the RP will start with, in terms of development: the area our characters shall start in. How much we go in with regarding the location depends on how much we want to develop in here-- whether we decide even what kind of world we start on is up to the participating community, so don't hesitate to suggest really anything about the environment. Just remember, some ideas may not be popular, but what matters is that we get something going up in this place, and hopefully that we end up with a creative world which will inspire uninhibited writing. So, GO. IDEAS! OPEN MINDS!

To those who stumbled in here out of curiosity or perhaps coercion, the place to gain information as to what The Open World Roleplay is would be this thread. Right here. I'm text, and also a link (I promise I don't lead to pornography)! Should you find yourself interested and wanting to partake, feel free to join at any time~

On a final note, profiles for this RP won't be needed. A roster will be implemented in this post later to merely keep track of who's participating and their respective characters.

  2. First and foremost, in my opinion, the overall theme or layout of the world should not be decided prior to actually reaching a point where it should be required. Doing so right now will prematurely place a restriction on those who would like to create something new, so as Cerby stated here, we should simply focus our efforts in defining the starting location, or area.

An important question would be how expansive this location should be. I also think that this should be reduced to the bare minimum: enough to have a solid starting point to have the RP start in, but leaving the surrounding areas and other locations ambiguous so as to encourage progressive worldbuilding.

That said, the first impression I get from this is a populated area. Without going to the far ends of the spectrum, I would suggest a small city of some type; sufficiently small so that loose ends with characters can be interconnected quickly with an event of any kind. The actual environment could be anything... obviously this is something that should be agreed upon, so for now, this will do.

    Anyone else?

  3. Well, I do like the idea of a small city. As for the surrounding area, I think something like the arctic or somewhere that the players would be inclined to take shelter in the city, and also have a reason to want to stay for a bit. And having the environment prove shelter from the cold is a useful way to give the players a base reason for being there in the first place.

  4. On the other side of the spectrum, it could start in a city in a desert.

  5. Or even to add spooky atmosphere, it could be in a swamp festering with undead, and therefor the city allows shelter from the undead horde (Kill the necromancer = easy 1st quest.) you know, the whole liberate the townsfolk ordeal. ;)

Also, are we going to decide on a time period? (I know you can be whomever, but there would have to be a time period right?) and we could just use magic/time travel as an excuse for characters that are behind/ahead of the time period.

  6. Time period should be left fairly unspecific for the time being for the sole reason that a wide variety of different characters with unique themes and abilities is bound to be generated from this alone. It is already a given that this will be within the Manaverse due to the possibilities of magic and other derivative abilities... But aside from that, we should also leave this ambiguous for starters.

Your first suggestion sounds actually good, though. Without directly linking an incident to the fact that the populated area (supposedly) is in the middle of a harsh environment, it would sort of give a starting push to the whole thing. I don't want to rush to immediate incidents in the beginning though, so as to give characters more time to shine before something happens. This something, of course, could be almost anything~

  7. Alright, listen up maggots (Watching TFS Dragonball Z Abridged with Mr. Popo in the current episode so thats where I got the "listen up, maggots" part from. ) . I would like to prod with my own ideas on setting and whatever else I feel fit. In my opinion I feel that this open world would be a great way to pass the time and build up our own roleplaying skills. But enough of that, here are my two cents a'la starr:

    1. Arctic setting sounds great seeing how I based a good amount of my plots in that setting. But....how about something strange? New? What if this place...or this fraction of the 'world' Open world takes place in the beginning is underwater? See? Didn't expect that huh. Let me expand on this idea:

-From all the RPs I've seen, there hasn't been one taking place in an environment that's...well...in water. All i've seen was jungles, forests, mountains etc. But what about underwater? What if Open world /starts/ in this nice, unique underwater utopia that can be linked to possibly a single faction that contributes to technology? I mean, I'm sure we'll have some characters who have decent tech...why not pinpoint them back to a society that has that?
-Underwater. Plenty and I mean PLENTY of setting to work off of. You can describe the wildlife there...describe the underwater city (which is dome-based, mind you. We're not fish) and etc.
-Silly but exciting if you guys want it to be.
-Even if it's underwater, there could be means to go to the surface world. Maybe the surface world is a bit screwed up...hence why people would go underwater if this idea came through. The conflict up there would serve great for creating things to do.

    2. Make Open world a hub for all kinds of life. In and out of planet. But this is just a light suggestion though. Not /too/ serious of it.

    3. Perhaps start characters off with slight amnesia and have them only know their name. Their powers/abilities could be discovered as things go on. Might give some of us the chance to build up on a character's fight instead of normally setting their power in stone. Again, just a light suggestion.

    Yeah.

  8. Personally, I don't mind where the setting is - Also, if we go with a planetary Idea, we could pull a Star Wars: "A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away..." Meaning that if we went with planets, their could be multiple - hell we could even go with pulling characters from other places -- make it a truly open world. Meaning they're could've been a magical or technological flux so that a Paladin could meet Iron Man due to strange occurrences that lead all the players to a center point. We would just all have to make our own reasons on why they were in the Open World.

In addition, I think it would be nice for the players to be able to begin their first post more creatively - falling back on my own point of starting in a single area, we shouldn't make it a pinpoint - it should be like shadow said, a city, and they could begin anywhere, any way they wanted, to either give a flashy intro, or just give more detail on how and why their character is the way they are.

  9. Let's get a bump. Someone (anyone) can step up and post an opening post. Being that this is a random, completely spur-of-the-moment idea, just write whatever you please and everyone else will go along with it, in theory.

  10. Ok, so as far as setting is concerned, I think I have an idea that can explain why so many diverse characters are together, as well as give them a common goal in the beginning of the roleplay. The roleplay would open to strange sounds, blinking lights and the players could have slight amnesia. Soon, they would come to realize that they are all held in separate environments, similar to their homelands/world, with basic food and water dispensers and surrounded by glass or another see through material.

On the other side of the glass are watchful, curious eyes of a strange alien species. Taking photos and poking at the glass. The players come to realize they are nothing more than exhibits. Zoo animals for this strange species. Forced to live on their ship to be displayed, researched, bred and slaughtered. Each player knows nothing of one another, but they all have the same common goal: Escape.
