Proper Way to Opening a Banana

  1. This has been on my mind for a while, and it all started years ago when I saw my friend opening a banana from the bottom. I thought this was pretty odd, as I usually open it from the stem. I asked him about it and he says it's the "easier way" and that "That's how monkeys do it". I thought "Well monkeys eat insects off other monkey's heads too... Do you?" But I didn't really say that as it didn't relate to the subject at hand.
    Anyhow, I tried his method but I just ended up with a half-squashed banana. I wondered if I was doing it wrong. I could possibly, but taken the squashiness aside, it was easier.
    Then I found another method of opening a banana. Straight through the middle. This is usually done in cooking, but I sometimes do this method when I'm lazy. It's easier than the stem method and didn't give me a squashed piece of... - like the bottom method.

    So I ask you of this, ZEJ, how do you open your banana? What do you think is the proper way to opening one? And am I doing the second method wrong?

  4. Like a naarmallu Indian; squash the black patch at the bottom and the skin pops right off only. ;)

  6. I open mine from the top, but wouldn't a bigger question be how one goes about eating it in public? I usually break it a piece at a time, mostly to avoid stupid jokes.

  8. I -don't- eat a banana in public. Not because of the jokes or anything, but just because I prefer apples and I eat bananas only if there are no apples.

    Here in India bananas are cooked raw more often than they are eaten ripe (afai have seen) so yeah.

  9. I usually bend the top back a bit so that the peel splits open and I just tear along the rip to get to the banana. Leaves me with an empty peel that keeps the banana's shape- awesome for pranking someone. :p But I started doing that because I often get bananas that don't have a stem.

  10. ^ You and I have so much in common, Kuda (although sometimes the above method doesn't work, and then I just make an incision with my fingernails and dissect the banana from there).

    As for eating them in public, one of my friends has this thing about ... 'petting' bananas, and once [perhaps still does] hoped to obtain a banana sleeve. I assure you, in comparison, you kinda forget about any peculiarities about how one merely eats a banana.

  12. On the subject of this thread, my friend opened a banana from the bottom up the other day and acted as though it was this groundbreaking new concept (and I think he learned about it from Reddit too lolololol). I just laughed as I remembered this thread.

    And then we all made fun of him as he tried to consume the banana in a way that was attempting to make things weird, and he choked on it.

    Good times. Goooooooood times.
