Ocarina of Time 3D

Discussion in 'Miscellaneous Conjectures' started by Eebit, Jul 28, 2011.

  1. Well, as you all certainly know due to past threads on ol' ZEJ, Zelda: OoT was recently rereleased in the THRII DEE that everyone has been coveting lately. Now that's not to say that I absolutely hate the 3DS and everything it stands for because I personally really enjoyed the original OoT... but really, I think that the remake could have been a lot better. Some of the original content that was cut, for example, could have been tossed in (playable Light Temple, anyone?), or maybe actually /improving the models/ as opposed to shoving a couple shiny new polygons and slapping on some glittery textures and calling it a day.

Maybe I'm just holding the Big N to high standards, but really alot of what they've done as of late have been perfect examples of how they coast along and surf through on nostalgia and longtime fan support. It'd be nice to see them push along a little more and give in that extra effort that they used to put into games.

Zero Punctuation gave it a largely humourous review that is easy to agree with in my mind: (caution: NSFW)

What happened to the atmosphere here? I thought Phantom Ganon was supposed to be this spooky ghost that we had to deal with as opposed to an 'OMG HAX THAT PAINTING IN THIS ART GALLERY MOOOOOVES OMG IT'S LIKE A 3DS ART GALLERY ASDF.' Seriously, Nintendo, why take the atmosphere out of the scenes? (See also: Gohma Boss Fight)

  2. Well, I only played the Master Quest. It was like... awesome. The constant reuse of old items was really nice considering Zelda's track record of "found item, use item, forget item."

I was also able to do the dungeons in practically any order, getting the Biggoron sword and taking on the Water Temple [lol Shadow Link no beat Biggoron sword] as soon as I became an adult. The new puzzle designs of pre-existing areas was all the nostalgia I need. It was interesting to enter a room I knew everything about and not know anything about it.

Yes it had it's flaws, but so does every game. And it's bonuses, in my opinion, FAR outweigh the negatives.

Btw, beating the game without ever using the Master Sword [except when going through ice cavern] was fun =) Bottle+Biggoronsword=deadGanon

  3. Having played both the Virtual Console version of OoT and the 3DS version, I can see that each has their perks, visually and otherwise. I find the enhanced peripheral vision (camera) controls on the 3DS version to benefit the game muchos as far as aiming goes, and the 3D really does make things look amazing, but you're right when you say the atmosphere is lacking at times. In some areas of the game, certain areas or situations, such as the Lost Woods, or the Phantom Ganon fight, just don't seem quite as robust in the atmospheric department as they should. However, other areas, such as Zora's Domain and Hyrule Castle Town, look absolutely beautiful when compared to their old versions, and places like Inside Jabu Jabu's Belly, or the Kakariko Village Graveyard, somehow maintain the general atmosphere in the original, and when combined with greater graphics, it makes for a really cool-looking area. Navi is still just as annoying as ever though, and even suggests breaks every 15 - 30 minutes. >_>

Overall, both versions are worth playing, and I love both about equally, though I can see the appeal of this new 3D version and must say that it truly is the greater version of the game, regardless of the very few downfalls it contains. :)

However, I must say that I agree with you on the Big N's stance on things, at least in America. They need to bring some new IP's into the picture! I adore Mario, Zelda, Pokemon, Metroid, and Kirby, but we could do with something new to balance things out! I mean... how about some Last Story? ;) I find it - astounding - that Hironobu Sakaguchi's FINAL PROJECT before retirement hasn't been announced for worldwide release yet. Seriously?
