Oblivion Phantasy ~ Cardinal Sigil 【RP Thread】

Discussion in 'Statistical Roleplays' started by Shadow, Oct 12, 2012.

  1. ((IT FUCKING STARTS, BITCHES.))

Qhantarwa Valley's foreboding serenity was often attributed to the nearly-otherworldly water which seemed to eternally nourish it, to then further gather, disperse, and merge with other existing bodies of water from the surrounding areas. Purity's liquid essence fell down from the heavens as titanic cascades which presumably emanated from the towering structures scattered throughout the flourishing valley, the Khhatalaya Highlands, as the waterfalls seemed to flow from their largely-undiscovered pinnacles in a virtually endlessly manner. While technically the entire expanse was habitable, in truth, the safe zone laid innocently demarcated by three prominent sectors of the aforementioned highlands, named the Af, the Qo and the Tao. Although respectable in terms of amplitude, the boundaries of this area were relatively unknown... and thus, the Blue Signature that was the Larama'quta Tribe settled there, thousands of generations ago.

Biorhythm found itself nestled between the human settlements existing within the natural triangle, and the other monsters who inhabited the rest of Qhantarwa... Whereas the former had promptly adapted and expanded through the centuries due to this arrangement, the latter had, in effect, turned considerably more aggressive and territorial. This considerably difficulted both the exit and entry to the Af-Qo-Tao Triangle due to the characteristic cycle of the valley. As the crystalline water flowed both out and into various focal points, this also indicated the presence of lakes, swamps and similar geographic features that had formed even before the Era of the Ancient. And, despite holding pristine beauty to a beholder foreign to the Qhantarwa Valley, also frequently housed dangerous creatures these unsuspecting travelers might fall prey to.

"I... am not sure if this was even allowed." a young girl mused to herself, however loud enough for someone else to hear, stopping for a couple of seconds to contemplate the scenery... and possibly to properly locate herself as well. Her departure was planned to coincide with the dense, ethereal veils of phantom mist which enveloped the entire Yeqién Region during the winter, and as it permeated the atmosphere in a dreamlike manner, it was also considerably difficult to navigate through Qhantarwa...

Her frame was delicate, if not quite underdeveloped for her age, yet she portrayed an aura which relayed a voiceless message of "I Know What I'm Doing". Chocolate hair remained mostly inert due to the scarce breeze and, despite the heavily dulled sunlight, it was apparent that it was clear. Her eyes possessed a truly unique hue as the color existed within the boundaries of blue and violet, dimmed however by an infinitesimal quantity of gray. Even though the climate could in fact begin an unexpected downpour at any given moment, the girl wore relatively light clothing themed with shades and tints of blue, the Signature of the Larama'quta Tribe brandished a jacket unsuspectingly woven by metallofibers.

She stood over a steep mass of earth entwined with the surfacing branches from nearby trees without difficulty, balance maintained by a weapon which, in comparison to the girl, looked enormous. In reality, it was one out of two ordinary katanas she wielded, blades however hopelessly rusted to a point she might as well replace them. Hand sliding down to a pouch strapped and secured to an unfastened leather belt holding her swords' respective sheathes, she procured a parchment, a discolored piece of paper in different yellows and browns which were not remarkable enough to impede writing. She examined the cylinder of paper for approximately a second as she continued,

"I mean, I'm supposed to be the emissary and all, but they never really said anything about bringing..." her voice trailed off as she unrolled the parchment with both hands, linear runes which seemed to be part of the paper itself lighting into activation. Magic brewed from the item, but was contained by the intricate spells which then traced lines and snaked curves into the otherwise blank page in increasingly faster succession until it was completely drawn. She waved a hand as if to dismiss her earlier train of thought, as the girl instead focused on visually scanning the detailed map before her, "Nevermind. It looks like we're nearly by the edge of Qhantarwa already."

Her name was Laeyamiika Aoraine, or simply Layamy...

...She, in fact, was the emissary.

Layamy's gaze trailed ahead. Her route, as she was advised, had been rather unconventional, and the particular detour forced the girl to traverse through an infamous swampland. Granted, she knew that the dangerous monsters residing there became relatively infrequent encounters during the Season of Mist, but now that she was practically entering its uncertain maw... She ignored an uncomfortable tingle venturing across her spine as she turned, map still in both hands, tilting her head slightly in to accentuate the interrogative,

    "You still there, right?"

  2. The calm before the merciless storm...

Such were the thoughts that ailed the young, listless dreamer's mind as he meandered the path behind his equally-youthful escort. The foliage they traversed was lush - perhaps almost too much so. The pristine, untouched condition of the area left a bad taste in the boy's mouth. Its vivid colours struck him as something from a dream... though his were never quite so tranquil in nature. He walked quietly, treading lightly, but shuffling along in a way that was almost too cautious. Few moments occurred when he was not more than several steps behind the younger girl's shadow, sprawling distantly behind her. One can never be too careful... he thought. The tendrils of mist that enveloped the entirety of the visible left a hazy memory of his plagued dreams...

In truth, it was not the jungle itself that unnerved the boy, in spite of his companion's warnings of the monsters that dwelled within... It was his experience in the fields of the unwaking - the world of Dreams beyond that of what those dwelling perennially in the conscious world of the awake could see - that left deep doubt painted on his face. The cool spritz of mist emerging from the base of the tri-falls kept him certain that he was, in fact, awake.

    A good sign...

Reve Aisling was his name. He knew not how he had stumbled upon the girl... though she had been incredibly accommodating, letting him accompany her in her mission as the emissary of her tribe. Though she seemed far more focused on navigation than on him, which suited Reve just fine. His goal was not to hinder her in her journey, but to find his answers for himself. Perhaps some would find such a goal selfish in nature, but Reve was not quite as selfish as some... Presently, however, the duo traversed the jungle. The girl had yet to inform him of her end-goal of this journey, but it seemed that she needed to take an alternate route in order to keep him out of sight of her tribe... however, Reve did not fully know if this was true. Simply an assumption made by the wild, untamed thoughts of the young boy...

    "You still there, right?"

The girl's voice beckoned him back into reality, once again, interrupting his thought process and summoning his attention to her. She seemed playful in her tone of voice, though a hint of concern was left upon the intonation of her question. Reve did not immediately answer, in case she looked back to notice how far he had fallen in following her. He jogged back to reach her present placement, as she continued to wander ahead of him. "Yeah... still here." A curt, short answer. He knew she was not one to mince words... and her intrepid ways kept her pushing forward. A very harsh juxtaposition, indeed. The listless, cautious dreamer, and the swift, fearless emissary of the Larama'quta Tribe. Now beside the girl known as Layamy, Reve gave a quick glance over her. She was the picture of young adventure - prepared well with her twin blades, and her jacket. It was truly no surprise to him when he had learned that she was the emissary of her tribe... but that she had asked him to accompany her? Him, in his ripped clothing, and permanent shadows marring his face in a battleground of complicating emotion? That had been the surprise to him.

He caught her eye's gaze in her peripheral vision, as though she knew he was looking. "Sorry..." he began to mutter, but then decided to hold off on an apology, in order to better understand why a girl of her stature had chosen to bring him along on such a journey... one that he had no clue what he nor she had gotten themselves into. "Layamy... can I ask something...?" It was his turn to assume the interrogative. His dark brown eyes flitted with curiosity, meeting everything except the young girl's eyes. "Why would you bring me along? What do you have to gain in taking a companion?" He left one single thought unspoken: Especially one as weak as myself... Silence fell upon the two of them for a brief moment as Reve waited for the girl to answer the question, but then the thought of the journey ahead crossed his mind. And where are we going to end up? Layamy's confidence never seemed to waver. An admirable trait, to be certain, but the destination and the pathway they were taken... well...

Uncertainty is the key to madness... Second-guessing never helped anyone...

  3. Layamy followed, with her attentive gaze, the form shifting through the outlines of the surrounding scenery which revealed itself to be her companion jogging back in relative hurry to not be left behind. She aspirated a sigh, memories overlapping subtly with her field of vision and strands of thoughts, which truly made her wonder about the identity of the wakeful dreamer known as Reve Aisling. "Yeah... still here." he answered quickly, rather quietly, and Layamy would have truly mistaken this reply to a loud mumble under other circumstances. Whether it had been a coincidence, or a game of destiny, the girl could not truly pinpoint what exactly had led both into meeting, and ever since then they had regularly stumbled upon each other in an increasingly frequent manner. It merely took an unexpected encounter with a Banether, panther-like creature feared by many, for Reve's extraordinary abilities to surface into the light of knowledge. Could she really refer to it as "magic", having studied the intricate details about the functionality of Mana? It seemed like a completely different energy, a truly dreamlike essence foreign to this world...

Nevertheless, to her, the Sleepwalker was shrouded in a veil of mystery-- "Layamy... can I ask something...?" his voice, this time, was the one to beckon her back into reality. She hummed an affirmative "Uh-huh." while she directed one last confirmatory glance at the runic diagram of a map before rolling it back and confining it in the safety of her pouch, its magic deactivating instantly as she did. Managing to establish eye contact proved to be futile as he seemed to avoid her gaze, but she still remained focused and ready to listen to what he had to say as Reve opened his mouth to speak. "Why would you bring me along? What do you have to gain in taking a companion?"

"Err," she nearly precipitated in providing him with an answer, but luckily withheld herself which trigger a rather awkward span of several seconds consisting in silence between them both, though the rest of the jungle remained unaware of this change, "I guess it's safer." she said simply, her eyes departing from their positions to stare at the natural pathway stretching from her position. Although the density of the Qhantarwa Valley had never been a problem to her before, Layamy was glad the entrance to the swamp simultaneously announced a considerable decrease in the multitude of trees giving opening to the fragile earth and stagnant waters beyond that point.

"With these so-called "Unification Wars" going on, with the constant tension between the nations, and now with this sudden journey to Cruxaqata, I can't help but feel I am taking a big risk." she gripped the handle of her katana, which had been stabbed in the ground next to her ever since she reached this point, and proceeded to place it back in the corresponding sheathe in one agile movement. She quickly masked her uncertainty, "Might be just me, though. Strength in numbers, you know? I know running into some extremely dangerous monster is unlikely, but it's better to be prepared, I think."

"Though I for sure don't want to have to save you all the time, hehehe." she joked, leaping down the petite, earthen mound and landing smoothly on the scarcely-grassed ground past it. She looked back at Reve, and gestured him to follow before strolling along, "Come on, we're almost there!"

  4. It seemed that they had reached a stopping point when Reve's first question had escaped his lips. Layamy slowed to a halt in order to check their positioning against that of the diagram that would carry them to their destination. But I still don't know where we're headed... Otherwise, until this point, they had travelled in relative silence - varying, of course, at times of conversation such as the one they had reached at present. Layamy's first answer to his question piqued his curiosity, however. He raised an eyebrow, ever so slightly, with an appreciative smile crossing his lips. "Safer...?" Reve immediately knew that Layamy was favouring him with such an answer - she was perfectly capable of handling herself... though their encounter with the Banether had been one of much fanfare. Reve averted his eyes, looking down at his feet on the only mildly-trodden path below. He shuffled uncomfortably from one leg to the other... The memory of the monster had not been a pleasant one, though their teamwork had ultimately saved each other. Things clicked.

It was an awkward conversation to approach, and the young emissary gazed out into the fog as though an answer would emerge from the depths and strike her in the face... or perhaps, she was not at all looking to answer Reve's question. "Nevermind, you don't need to ans-" he was cut off by the brown-haired girl doing just that. The Unification Wars. Reve did not know much about the political state of affairs of the new land he had found himself in, and these so-called wars were no exception. "What are the Unification Wars, though?" he stated, in a distant manner. His indifference was brought on by the fact that he had heard the term in passing, but even still, he had never expected to get involved with such matters...

But she did have a point. Strength in numbers... he repeated to himself, mentally. He finally looked into her eyes. Met her determined gaze. The height difference between the two of them was not insurmountable, but it was notable enough that he had to look down to meet her deep blue eyes. She was certainly fuelled by a deep, powerful desire to not let her tribe down. Reve admired that about the young Layamy... her drive was something that he lacked. Him in his raggedy, loose-fitting clothing...

The trance of the moment was broken in a mere fluid movement by the girl. Her katana was removed from the ground, and placed back in the proper sheathe in a mere instant. Reve could not help but chuckle a little at the state of her weaponry... for someone so prepared, her dual katana both held a matching layer of rust covering the majestic, metallic sheen that they likely once had. Though Reve himself carried a roughly-carved channelling device for his own Mana, he found it humourous, the way she kept her weapons. "Maybe... you should think about getting those replaced, Layamy..." he said, once again keeping a distantly reserved tone about his voice. It was an airy, aloof voice that seemed to carry away into the distance... before returning to the harsh reality of the situation with strongly juxtaposed tone of bitterness, "Never know when we will need to fight again."

She had responded with a snappy remark of how she did not want to be saving him all the time. He sputtered for a moment, a blank look crossing his face... but before he even had a chance to process her remark, she had darted off. "Wait up!" he called after her, running down the mound and sliding with a level of grace that he typically did not possess. She was a spirited one, that Layamy. Reve had to offer her that... but would she be dragging the two of them into more trouble if she rushed ahead with the level of playfulness that she carried...?

  5. Yieryawa Swamp.

Even with the seasonal fog obscuring the view, Layamy and Reve advanced through Yieryawa with a steady pace holding a certain degree of cautiousness behind it. Despite the fact the month of Neiner announced the Season of Mist and, in consequence, the overall absence of the creatures inhabiting Qhantarwa, the young Clear Warrior personally chose to elude risks by remaining focused and also took routes that would minimize the possibility of encountering monsters. In reality, the Season of Mist was merely the subtle vestige of winter left in the Sky's Paradise, as Heijeram was almost perpetually graced by a tropical climate.

Hauntingly, the mist dispersed and gathered sparsely and sporadically, revealing outlines of submerged forage which seemed both near and distant at the same time, but nevertheless projected a phantom path woven among the moist soil and stagnant water only nourished by the last traces of dying currents from outside Yieryawa's territory. Precisely, it was these bodies of unknown depths that Layamy deliberately avoided. Crossing them as unprepared as they currently were would have certainly been suicide, or at a lesser degree of fatalism, an invitation to an ambush of the waterborne creatures lurking, hidden from view...

In theory, of course, occurrences such as the aforementioned ones would, all in all, be rare in nature, but that did not prevent the factor of luck or even destiny in determining the outcome. And interfere, it did. Stepping warily while motioning for the Sleepwalker to follow her, the girl entered, once again, a new sector of the swampland. Despite retaining the same uneventfulness, the journey through Yieryawa had extended for 20 minutes, and Layamy, at least, was quite sure they would be reaching the end quite soon. Earthen path flanked by an enclosement of discolored water from where wild trees sprouted, the way led straight ahead... and she could discern, past the refreshing mist, that the flora began to increase in density as the particular features of the swamp became less and less evident.

"Well," the Clear Warrior began, glancing at Reve as they both walked across the stretch of soil, "I guess I won't have to save you from anything, after--"

A screech interrupted her, acute pitch semidistorted by the acoustics of liquids. In that single instant, a jolt of panic stung her heart, but she instantly recovered, instead thanking the Gods she had opted to have, at least, a single weapon drawn during their passing stay in the Yieryawa Swamp. "Wh-what?" she stuttered, grip on the katana tightening, and she reached for the second one. Even though a layer of rust took residence in their blades, they surely would have use within the next moments...

Water shifted, adapting to new, surfacing forms of darkened, glutinous flesh which slithered into partial view. Serpentine, plump bodies snaked into view, frontal ends gradually raising themselves into a poised, threatening stance. Rows and rows of jagged teeth circled an opening in place of the Sanjithon's mouth, like a monstrously overgrown leech, modeled like an organic funnel leading down and into a digestive tract. They were exclusively predatory creatures, and obviously they saw the pair as potential prey...

    -----~---~---~-----

"But Sanjithon aren't supposed to appear until after late Skroam..." she questioned their predicament even after they had been clearly surrounded by the four monsters who still dwelt in the waters they were accustomed to. With her other katana drawn, and the two weapons held proudly by the Clear Warrior, Layamy had quickly shifted to the leftmost edge of the earthen path while maintaining her swords in balance and ready to act should she need to strike.

This task was quite troublesome when one found oneself wielding two weapons but only having been trained to use one in battle, especially when a real threat had just presented itself... But Layamy had been stubborn, and was completely willing in finding a way around the limitations she was often imposed during her training. To an extent. She composed herself, and finally spoke,

"I hope you're up for this, Reve."

    Layamy starts at E4.

  6. {Reve starts at D4}

Trouble's not far off, I guess...

A few seconds had passed before the mists had set in on them as they entered the swamp. In spite of her carefree foray into the depths of the swamp, it seemed that Layamy was now airing on the side of caution, hand firmly holding a rust-layered katana in a white-knuckled grip, as if cutting her way through the mists of the swamp. Her other hand continually hovering over her second katana - the exact twin of the first blade. The suctioning of their feet through the dank mud-laden path was the only evident noise, aside from the occasional ripple on either side, as the land subsided into a stagnant water. Perhaps too much so. Reve stayed slightly behind Layamy. Protecting her. Watching her back for anything that could come after her. At a moment's notice... His lips firmed into a tight line, grimacing as he realized just how paranoid he felt. The two of them had been alone in the swampland for nary more than a twenty-minute interval, and already he was growing more and more uneasy.

Though his gaze was set on the ethereal path being laid out before them, and its walker in the lithe, feminine form of Layamy, Reve could see the shapes of the mist playing tricks on his eyes in his peripherals. Perhaps something was watching them, but he gave no hint of being at all alarmed. His hands were stowed firmly in warm pockets, left hand grasping a small metallic orb. Subtly, he toyed with the sphere in his pockets. Rolling it around, feeling its every detail. An ancient, arcane channel for his Mana reserves. It comforted him, moreso than the silence that lingered between him and Layamy. They didn't dare speak, lest they alert their presence to whatever lay just beyond their immediate vision of the path in front and behind them. Perhaps this is for the better... Reve thought, he did not want any unwarranted fighting to need to be done, though Layamy had seemed so determined to push the two of them through.

But finally, the brown-haired emissary broke the silence, staring at him with a slightly confident smirk. "Well, I guess I won't have to save you from anything, after--" She stopped mid-sentence, interrupted by a screech that made Reve wince sharply. The pitch gnawed at his mind - his ears not yet accustomed to noise other than the squelch of their boots in the mud. Hands immediately flew to his ears as he shut his eyes, vision blurring slightly from the frequency of the pitch - of monsters yet foreign to him. Layamy seemed taken aback by their appearance, however. Reve needed not question this. He clicked his tongue, lowering his hand to his pocket to retrieve his Arcane Eye. "But yet, here they are..." he said, idly. Obviously, they had been surrounded by these Sanjithon without the knowledge of the duo. Aquatic bottom-dwellers. Reve made a mental note to be aware of those things lurking just out of sight, especially when travelling with Layamy.

He stepped back, now slightly behind his friend. "I don't think you need to be asking me about being ready," he stated, in a hauntingly calm tone, "when you are the one who has been gripping your weapons with a grasp tighter than Death." He smiled warmly, regardless of whether or not Layamy would look at him. If she did, he was happy to be of comfort to her. He would stand by her, though he felt that she was a perfectly capable warrior on her own. Together, they would fend off the Sanjithon.

    Without any sort of trouble...

    ~ Ally Phase I ~

And indeed, Layamy did turn, stance however unbroken, to face the enigmatic Reve whose tone had changed into a rather reassuring one. She nodded only once, but her focused and determined expression softened for a couple of seconds... before she turned back to the face the general direction of the waterborne threats. With their current proximity, they were difficult to see with the varying concentrations of mist hiding, revealing, and blurring their fleshy forms. Although never having battled one, Layamy had well heard about Sanjithon--enough to know that they were startlingly dangerous on water. Venturing inside the stagnant waters, which she calculated to be deep enough for them to reach her knee should she plunge into them, was out of the question.

However, it did not signify that she could not use her own tricks.

Smirking, Layamy channeled her Mana--evoking the steps for the creation of a liquid laden with the very essence of Mana. It was a secret technique that the Larama'quta Tribe had perfected and passed down the countless generations, taught to each and every member of the community at an early age in order to effectively open an extremely ample range of development of potential. Potential she, of course, was willing to utilize. It seemed as the very humidity in the air focused into a single point, power brewing from within the young Clear Warrior and pouring into this point in a matter of a few seconds... and then, it formed from the apparent nothingness: a drop; a crystalline drop of water possessing untold purity, its shifting icy tint evidencing a high quantity of Mana...

She let it fall, like a single tear breaking the surface tension of the tainted water. What happened next was unprecedented. It... transformed a roughly circular area around the contact point, way more than the driblet could possibly contain. It continued to expand, in all three dimensions of space, meshing and consuming the coagulated liquid in a wave of purification. Clear Water. And when it stopped, an unspecified boundary divided this small sanctuary of uncorrupted water with the rest of the swamp's, flawlessly demarcated. Another one joined instants later.

"Aaand that's one thing taken care of, I guess." Layamy said, lowering her gaze to the newly-formed pool of Clear Water lying before her, for just a moment. While the spectacle might as have been stunning to those who witnessed it, even for Layamy, it only meant a safe zone for her... an area of familiarity to her Element, colored blue in the elemental spectrum. She glanced at her katana, before her eyes resumed watching the Sanjithon, somewhere beyond...

I'll just have to wait for the next...

As Layamy turned to cast her gaze upon him, Reve's smile turned into a small grin. She nodded at him, still in her confident, determined fashion. She was probably a little bit nervous, just based on the look in her eyes, and rightfully so. They were alone, isolated inside of the swamp with only the respective other for protection... but this did not particularly alarm Reve anymore. At least, not as much as it should have. Though they had been together only a short time, he recalled the encounter with the Banether... We've fought together before. We can do it again... After all, it had been chance and nothing more that had allowed the two of them to survive the scrap with the Banether. Both with their lives...

But that had long passed. An event that was as coincidental as they came. All in all, he was happy to not be alone anymore... to have been found by Layamy. He would accompany her for as long as she needed him... but she was presently wrapped up in her battle preparations. Not wanting to distract her from her efforts, he watched nonchalantly as she released some strange form of Water Mana, cleansing the murky water in two small pockets. The depths of the swamp water were purged into an ice-blue. A clearer, more pure source of water... It had not been the first time Reve had seen her work with the phenomenon which he could only think to brand as magic. Indeed, she worked her entire battle strategy around the clarity of the water... or so it seemed to Reve's untrained eyes.

Reve's smile had faded from his lips as soon as Layamy turned back to the haunting mists of the swamp, shifting ominously to conceal whatever terrors lurked just out of the field of vision provided by the two of their respective eyes. The unknown creatures were something that Reve knew well enough to fear, as he had yet to see their form emerge from the shadows, or the murky depths. But perhaps it was time to initiate his own preparations. His deep brown eyes scanned the waters, attempting futilely to ascertain the location of the surrounding monsters, so that he could help Layamy when the time came... as much as he could. And he desperately hoped that he could assist her, in spite of how much more capable a fighter she was than he.

He tightened his grip on the orb as he took a step back. He could feel his grips on his consciousness ripping away, as his form collapsed into the mud. I'll have to... tidy up later... he thought in good humour to himself, a smile gracing his lips as his body fell listlessly to the ground. And suddenly... his essence seemed to detach itself from its bodily prison - Reve could feel himself floating, seeing his body lying directly at his feet. He had separated himself from his cage once more, tormented by nightmares and dreams alike. Thankfully, the beings opposing him this time were corporeal. He could eliminate their threat... and Layamy was at his side, there to assist him in doing so. He readied himself for their approach... he was prepared, for once, to eliminate an enemy threat.

    ~ Ally Phase II ~

The Clear Warrior, despite having witnessed the Sleepwaker's strange abilities before, could not help but raise a single eyebrow at the display--of Reve himself retreating to the realm of dreams, while his essence--was it his soul?--astral and intangible, arose from his unconscious mortal shell... While she had not dared to speak to him about this peculiar state, she imagined he could still perceive, think and feel to an extent. As if reality was all but another reverie. Layamy blinked as the water being displaced reached her ears, and proceeded to immediately ready herself as the realization arrived a second later--the Sanjithon were moving.

Without a second thought, and with a graceful leap, her form entered the twin, isolated sectors of Clear Water she had just formed. Evidently, the level of water was just enough to reach her knees, but this did not stop a brave Layamy from finishing her preparations to the incoming battle. To her, it seemed as if she had, paradoxically, had extended a portion of her being into liquid form... while the Clear Water felt strongly active by itself, she wondered, just maybe, what secrets would truly lay concealed behind that perpetually crystalline mask. Her own Mana Cycle quickened, but just barely...

And then, her own active Mana took form. Individual strands of magical energy detached from the girl's body, progressively losing their intangible shapes as the purest essence of the Element of Water was bestowed upon them, effectively creating Water Mana. They bathed and soaked into her katana--specifically, their blades--as if they truly were the component they embodied, though the Mana had been commanded to assimilate itself to her weapons. Even the rust of the metal seemed to change as the blades acquired a distinctive, aqueous blue hue. Just like Reve, Layamy too was prepared as well.

    <AP: 5/15>

The shimmering form of the astral projection that Reve had released from himself stood patiently, watchfully, and dutifully above his sleeping, tangible form. He spun, watching the Sanjithon emerge from the fog that had lay tranquilly in a sheet over the swamp. Their presence was quiet, though they did project sound to his mortal form. He could hear them moving, as well as see them from his resolute astral perch, hovering slightly over the slumbering human form beneath him. Layamy had chosen to continue her foray against the two Sanjithon that approached her Mana-purified field of water, set up just off the shoreline of the swamp, while the astral form of Reve decided to attempt to engage the two approaching the opposite bank of the swamp.

If 'engage' were even a proper descriptive term for one who could not be harmed in the state he presently existed in.

Though the projection of the boy stood, it was a mere coexistence of his mental state of being. An arcane magic, brought to life by some strange part of the boy. His dreams... they wandered from the confines of his mind into reality, allowing the boy to have his two aspects coexist upon the same plane. A fantastic feat... but also a curse. His slumbering form was left relatively unprotected, save for whatever semblance the projection could use. And right now, as the Sanjithon were closing in on him, Reve's mental consciousness proceeded to move towards the opposing Sanjithon, preparing to guard against the onslaught that was to come.

Enter the realm of the slumbering...

A whispering wind picked up as Reve's lips moved to form the words, though no sound would escape them. The doldrums of the swamp had slight breeze to them as the projection moved - no, perhaps the word 'drifted' would be a far more accurate description. The projection drifted and wavered in place, standing now on the opposite side of Reve's body. The Sanjithon stared directly through the translucent spectre of the boy. The sleepwalker. And in retaliation for the aggressive and hostile approach, Reve stared into its soul, a distant glimmer, inviting the serpentine monster into a deep trance not dissimilar to what Reve himself was going through. The invitation was not one that many could resist... would the weak-minded Sanjithon be able to turn down such an invitation...?

Layamy... Reve mentally reached out to the girl in encouragement, and reassurance, You are strong...

    ~ Ally Phase II ~

Whereas Reve's target promptly collapsed by the effect of whatever astral power he imposed to the straightforward, instinctual pool of the monster's mind, the two Sanjithon near Layamy would soon find themselves surrounding her, the two forms almost overpowering compared to the girl's.

Maybe this was a bad idea...

Screech's deafening proximity was followed immediately with a snapping strike--gaping opening lined with exterior fangs aimed straight at her, while the monster behind her lowered itself as the preparation for a different, more basic attack that Layamy had no way to notice. By reflex she braced herself, allowing for the force of the tackle to be diverted away while using the presence of the Clear Water she had conjured to retain her ground. Fangs pierced her arms nevertheless, though just superficially, drawing the first drops of blood of the battle. Though the second attack also struck her, it was not particularly dangerous given the particular fabric of her protective jacket.

Holding her position was not going to be particularly favorable, she reckoned, given their enemies outnumbered them... for now. Using the purified liquid's very essence as an extension of her own, she took virtually no time at all to allow for her Mana Cycle to minutely quicken once again, before she retaliated. Blades imbued with the blues of the elemental spectrum, Layamy's body appeared to flow with as much grace as water would, weapons carried from different angles ultimately coming to meet the Sanjithon's darkened, slimy flesh. The strengthened slashes left sizable wounds from which viscous, oily blood poured out, with the monster left to squirm at its new wounds while its pained screeches only reached half intensity.

With a glance to the side, Layamy practically leapt out of the merged pools of Clear Water, coming to stand in the way of of the last Sanjithon's planned path--a discrete attempt at attacking the unconscious Reve. Her eyes flicked quickly around to ensure they were not completely ambushed... "We... we're probably getting surrounded soon."

With her concerns voiced, she merely stood to wait, knowing that the monsters would inevitably begin to move and attack again. While Layamy knew that the Sanjithon's attacks were not particularly effective on her, the prospect of having them closer than they already were was unsettling. Her wounds had begun to sting as well, a sensation she had previously not been aware of, and with no immediate way to stop the light bleeding, she figured she might as well just continue. I'll be fine. This is nothing... I can keep fighting.

The slumbering body of the boy resting in the mud of the Yieryawa Swamp had his mouth twist into the faint traces of a smile, knowing in his dreams that the Sanjithon encroaching upon his position had entered the same dimension of sleep that Reve himself was resting in. His shimmering guardian form listlessly hung within the air, lingering slightly over the boy's body in what could only be some sort of defensive formation. Though Reve's eyes remained firmly shut, the exact opposite was true of his dreamlike form - wide-open eyes surveyed the landscape... though they could hardly discern anything aside from the Sanjithon in the immediate vicinity. Turning his attention back to Layamy's former position, the astral projection would witness what would appear on Reve's own face as a display of slight horror; his friend and partner taking on two Sanjithon at once... and it was clear that she was at a true disadvantage.

"Layamy..." the slumbering boy whispered. Her name, and nothing more.

In response, the projection seemed to whisk its way towards the nearer of the two serpentine creatures, sloshing in the shallow water that had been purified by the girl's Mana filtration system moments to minutes ago... Crimson was let out to stain her jacket, brought on by the fangs of the first serpent. The second one, however, did not leave as visible a mark. Reve winced slightly, shaken to see her surrounded so. She seemed able to sustain both attacks without much trouble... though Reve was worried for her safety at the rate she was going. Thankfully, after slashing the target nearest the dream spectre, Layamy relented. The girl was a talented - prodigal, even - fighter, but even she could not take on two large Sanjithon at once without help. Surrounded... Layamy would hear a voice within her head; Reve's, stretching to her from his dreams. The sleeping one, Layamy... A slight direction to her, as he attempted to imprint a thought on the girl so as to eliminate the water serpent that he had detained.

Meanwhile, the projection itself raised a phantasmal arm to chest level, pointing menacingly downward with a hauntingly absent look upon its face. Pointing its finger, tendrils of prismatic Mana released, drifting towards the Sanjithon that had harmed Layamy. As it touched the beast, the Mana would seep into its body, evicting the Life Energy from within it. The sheer vacancy of the astral projection at this very moment would be enough to leave a burning impression on even the simplest of minds...

    ~ Ally Phase III ~

Surrounded..., she had heard what she knew, from her rather limited experience alongside Reve's extraordinary ability, was the primary method of communication--through the fleeting veil of conscious unconsciousness. Fortunately, she had leapt away from this locked position in time, for the injury inflicted by the monster, as superficial as it seemed at that time, was drawing more blood than it probably should have. Enzymes, she echoed, uncertain whether it could be a passage from a book or something she had been told, but details like these were hardly important at the moment... That the Sanjithon secrete, preventing blood from coagulating...

Maybe they would, indeed, need to take care of them as soon as they could. A foreign thought process made her glance at the other beast, coiled half-submerged in the unmoving waters, soundly sleeping by whatever sort of magical allure it had made it fall into. She knew her next target.

"I... I'm fine, Reve." a questionable truth, carried by the tone of a solid fact, left her lips. While she did not want to push the boundaries of her stamina, having Reve leave his tangible, vulnerable other self unprotected was something she, as her friend, would not allow. And if she could not find the strength to help accomplish this... then this meant she needed to get stronger.

No sooner than Layamy had noticed the phantom projection's visible concern over her well-being, the Clear Warrior flinched again in anticipation to an immediate lashing--no different in core technique than the first, aimed at her head. A split second allowed a step back, and a step back allowed Layamy to have enough room to maneuver out of the way. The exterior fangs of the monstrous leech glided smoothly against the metal of her jacket, without consequences other than the physical force behind the impact. As much as she would have liked to retaliate, she had a chance she was not going to miss.

This chance presented itself in full as she simply turned around, approached the creature at the immediate, improvised swampshore, and plunged the blades straight into its resting form with all of her might.

Reve's shimmering form blinked momentarily as another of the lithe, serpentine creatures emerged from its position behind a veil of fog. Perhaps this was the one which had caused Layamy to shriek out previously... though it attempted to lunge for the phantasmal form of his dreams. He braced himself for the impact of the bloodied fangs, but it would never come to cause him tangible harm, drifting through his body as he looked on in utter neutrality, as though the initial thought of impact had evaporated from whatever his spectral subconscious could have been thinking. Distantly, however, he turned from his would-be assailant to look for the source of Layamy's voice, responding after a sizable amount of time had elapsed from his thoughts traipsing outward.

    "I... I'm fine, Reve."

It was clear that she was far less than fine, as she left his field of vision once again. A troubled look crossed the face of the slumbering boy, still lying in the mud, as his muscles tensed up. Reve did not want to leave Layamy on her own to face the unseen serpents in the fog, as their visibility was quite restricted in the conditions of the fog. Perhaps... it was unwise to assume that the Sanjithon would not be here... Reve thought to himself, retroactively. Surely, Layamy had made her move to the previous serpent that still remained in a state of slumber. Reve could feel it on the same plane of existence as he, though its essence remained imprisoned within its physical confines.

But a three-pronged attack was inevitable should Layamy fail to slay her target. If the Sanjithon were more intelligent predators, it would be easy to have split their inexperienced duo up and pick them off individually. With bated breath, Reve's tangible form hoped that this was not the case... that Layamy would follow through and strike true, eliminating at least one of the threats before they, as she had predicted earlier, were surrounded. As outnumbered as they had been to begin, this fight could still go in the favour of either of the sides... hopefully the wilderness would not claim victims in this fog. Layamy was certainly more wise about the area than he, but he was hesitant to reach out with his mind to ask her just how many before them had been lost in the swamp...

He moved towards where Layamy had been standing moments previous, indicated by a small trail of blood that had fallen to the ground, listlessly and in a chaotic pattern, staining the mud and the thin layer of water coating the main pathway. It was certainly a struggle to follow where she had been, but Reve's floating form targeted the Sanjithon that stood over, as though preparing to either follow her, or target his physical body. Not wishing to take any chances, he left himself exposed to allow Layamy to once more finish off the enemy he had left open, shooting a burst of uncharged, unrefined Mana towards her lurking follower. Come back... another serpent for you to eliminate... His ethereal thoughts, grasping to her consciousness in a ghastly tone... would she listen to him?

    ~ Ally Phase IV ~

It was almost unreal, ironically dreamlike, the moment when the Sanjithon simply slipped through their own defensive stance and lashed out at the Sleepwalker's unknowing, defenseless body. The forms almost enveloped the poor boy, sinking fangs into his ragged clothing and piercing the flesh beneath to seek blood.

There was no time to even utter a verbal reaction. Actions would have to do. Layamy sprung immediately, up into the air, blades azure by the very essence of water imprinted on them gleaming in the faint, morning light refracted infinitely by the ghostly fog. She did not bother to even land on the ground to get a clear overview of the situation, as the Clear Warrior literally just plunged into the creature swordfirst, ripping out the weapons as their own, potentially lethal slashes. She could feel the elemental power of her blades fading already, dissipating back into the natural cycle of the world, but even so, she concentrated fully on her assault. It did not fall, though, just screeched and turned to tower, this time, over Layamy herself.

This had dragged on long enough.

    Layamy moves to E5 (C6 - D6 - E6 - E5).

Layamy attacks Vuene! 2 Hits! 7 Atk Damage, 7 Atk Damage!

  16. {Reve basic attacks Vuene (D5)! 6 INT Damage!}

As he had somewhat predicted, Reve's mind could no longer feel the consciousness of the Sanjithon on the same plane of existence as he. Its tendrils of subconscious had faded away, leaving nothing besides surely its lonely physical corpse as a remnant. Layamy had eliminated it as he had instructed her through his roundabout imprint on her own subconscious. Good... his spectral form seemed to whisper out, though it was not a tangible sound. Only Layamy would be able to recognize it...

Suddenly, however, he could hear the sloshing in the mud. His physical form winced and rolled slightly, inadvertently exposing himself to any would-be assailants. Layamy was likely not near enough to protect him from any immediate danger. And equally suddenly, the projection of Reve's sleeping mind was able to see just what the ramifications of Layamy and his own shimmering form leaving his own self - his physical self - alone were. The two Sanjithon had encroached, or rather, slithered towards the body that lay more or less motionless and vulnerable to their assault.

And as suddenly as he had slipped into his dreamlike trance, here he was snapped from it by the feeling of an intensified pain in his slumbering form. The shimmer of his projection dissipated into the mist, as though it had enveloped it in its ethereal grasp, and his consciousness snapped back to the tangible form, now owning blood which would gush forth to stain the already shredded pieces of clothing that he owned. He gasped audibly as he struggled to move away from the two Sanjithon that loomed over top of him.

"Layamy...!" he called out to her warily, now in a voice that was truly his own, as opposed to the mental voice he had been using to communicate with her. The thoughts of his dreamwalking state were muddled, as one feels when they are waking from a strange dream. She heeded his call in moments, however, leaving him little time to decipher the dream he had. What was the state of the battle? Were they still surrounded? He only counted two Sanjithon remaining, but just as easily, the others could be waiting to strike at him. Reve struggled to his feet as he shot from his small, spherical orb a blast of prismatic, uncharged Mana, shooting the Sanjithon square in its abdominal region. Layamy slashed at it, also cutting it down to size...

"We need to get out of here..." he muttered, almost exclusively to himself, as he backed slowly away from his partner to prepared to take down the final serpent himself.

  18. {Reve uses Hypnotic Gaze on Scala (C4)! High Chance of Sleep!}
    <MP: 8/20>
    {Reve moves to B2 [B4 - B3 - B2]}

Time seemed to slow down for Reve as this time he could see the glistening fangs of the Sanjithon, coated in blood and some strange secretion that Reve could not identify came viciously towards him. He braced himself for the impact of the tooth on his flesh, and winced as it left a deep gouge in both his clothing, and a gash spewing blood in his chest. Thankfully, the sting of the secretion intermingling with his bloodstream was never something that came. He clutched at his chest, staggering into the swamp water to alleviate the pain of the blood. Shit... he thought to himself, quietly, before attempting to submerge the wound. He hoped Layamy's Mana-powered purification had spread to his current position, but it seemed unlikely considering how occupied he knew she would have been. He was still struggling to figure out just where she had been while he had been dreaming. It was all a mixed haze, and he was frightened of being awake...

Reve looked back. The Sanjithon had yet to follow him into its home turf - the water. He knew, from his limited experience with the beasts of this land, not to let them work around their natural environments. It would simply allow them the opportunity to become exponentially more deadly. He moved his bloodied hand off of his chest to touch his pendant, fingers running along the spiderweb pattern of the strings. Rolling the beads around him as a sort of touchstone, Reve shut his eyes. What to do... what to do... he repeated, mentally. Layamy couldn't have been far away now, and surely she would be either hunting down any remaining predators lurking around, or preparing to strike the one that had attacked him. Where she was, he did not know for sure... but he didn't want to risk the chance of yelling for her again, lest he alert the Sanjithon to his position.

From his troubled sleep, he recalled finally that he had lured one of the weak-minded Sanjithon into a slumber, allowing it to be left entirely vulnerable to Layamy. Hopefully he could land the same tactic on the Sanjithon that had attacked him... at the very least, it would stop the possibility of being torn apart further with more gashes that could easily become infected by swamp water. He removed his hand from his pendant and pointed the spherical eye to the serpentine monster, releasing a stare of glowing red energy that would take the monster to the world of the slumbering. Expended, Reve collapsed further into the swamp, allowing himself a moment's reprieve, while still trying to make sense of the battle. Dazed, confused, and spent, he hoped that Layamy was near enough to end the battle soon...

    Enemy Drops

Leech Fang x9 - The pointed, retractile fang of a Sanjithon. Without the monster itself, though, it simply becomes a decently sharp needle. Could be rather useful.

Anti-Coagulant x2 - A much rarer extract from the saliva of a Sanjithon, this compound prevents the coagulation of wounds allowing them to continue bleeding for an extended period of time.

    Gold Obtained: 12 Units

    -----~---~---~-----

With the bloodied, repeatedly slashed monster preparing to strike at her collapsing by the force of Reve's attack, Layamy--at last, between moments that felt minutes--could breathe out an extended gasp. From the adrenaline, from her maneuver, from the entire ambush-esque battle... and see that, finally, it was also drawing to an end. Even though her katana had lost the elemental, strengthening properties of blue marine she had bestowed them, she could find enough inner will and determination to rush forward, and assault the Sanjithon with all of her might.

A shrill, high-pitched cry that had announced the beginning now announced the end, water rippling due to the extended sound waves before returning to its natural stagnancy, but with both the creatures' and their own blood mixed in varying amounts. The fog, which seemed anything but a background component in the heat of battle, returned with its overbearing, encroaching ominousness at the moment of calm, grazing skin in a gentle, slightly cold touch without actual touch.

    "Hah... hah... hah..."

Dropping her afterstance, a single weapon met the safety of its sheath, while the other sank directly into humid soil below. Layamy Aoraine had, then, enough time to pant in exhaustion. She partly leaned on this katana to support herself while her Mana Cycle naturally refilled whatever magical energy she had spent before she had to recall the Clear Water, still pure and untainted in dual, merged pools defying physical ruling.

"You okay there, Reve? I think we might need to rest here..."

  20. And sure enough, Layamy was somehow there to deliver the final blow to whatever Sanjithon yet lurked around in the fog.

Reve had put enough distance between him and the final serpentine monster that he had encountered to not be at risk of any further gouges from those frighteningly vicious teeth. The fog had concealed it, but the shriek that had so deafened both him and Layamy at the beginning of the battle was now one of the more relieving things he had heard all day. He allowed himself a moment to lie back and sink into the muddy water a little bit... just for a moment of true rest, though he had been sleeping for some of the battle... His hands sunk into the cool mud, supporting himself as he sat there at ease for a moment - a moment, and nothing more.

The only thing audible to him through the listless haze that lay over the swamp was the sound of the few ripples he made with his exhalations, as well as Layamy's own rhythmic, exhausted panting somewhere in the distance. The dreamer closed his eyes, deeply inhaling to try and clear his mind...

...only to be interrupted by Layamy again, calling out to him from wherever she was in the fog. "You okay there, Reve? I think we might need to rest here..." Yes. Rest. It seemed almost a given after what was only their second true fight together, but still half-submerged in the swamp water, he felt almost as though responding to such rhetoric was unnecessary. All still, he called back to her, "Way... ahead of you." He stifled a yawn as the adrenaline rush he had received from being awoken from his wandering dreams by the multitude of cuts in his skin. "I suppose you jinxed yourself, there," he alluded playfully into curtain of fog, "Monsters being unlikely? You not wanting to have to save me all the time?" He looked down at himself, chuckling nervously. "I thought you said we weren't going to see monsters."

Wherever she was, he knew from their short time together that she would pick up that he was simply trying to diffuse the tension of the situation... After all, laughter was considered to be the best medicine. But thinking about that made him recall more images from his dream... the trail of blood that Layamy had left from her cuts, her also being surrounded by two horrible and snakelike forms. He wondered silently whether or not she was simply trying to cover up the pain for his benefit... What could she gain from hiding that...? She's the emissary, not me. She's the important one...
