40 Day Song Challenge

Discussion in 'Спам Oстров' started by Eebit, Aug 4, 2012.

  1. So, a while back, Jonno was posting day-by-day a forty-day list of songs on his Facebook wall. I figure this would make for something cool to bring to ZEJ, especially seeing the popularity of our "what're you listening to" thread. So uhh... the categories for each day are as follows. Feel free to take breaks between when you post, because I know I will be... but here goes the forty day challenge:

  7. DAWN OF
    THE FIRST DAY

    -72 Hours Remain-[sup]**[/sup]

Alright. Day One. Nintendo. We gonna do dis. I'm going to take this post-by-post, and therefore follow how I thought this would go. ;) I'll also be posting a little bit of stuff on why I chose each song. Here we go!

SUBJECT OF THE DAY: Favourite song to dance to.

As I don't do a whole lot of dancing of any form, I'm going to stick something here that got played throughout this year as a great big joke between some of the student council members, so when it got played at a school dance it was always bloody hilarious to all of us. Definitely a good year of school, though it had its downs, council kept me occupied and busy and out of trouble... as much as one can in their second last year of high school, at least. ;) I'll let you make of that what you will.

Obviously, this is hardly what can be considered music, but really, I was at a loss of what to put down for this day, so forgive me!

**Disclaimer: This isn't really Majora's Mask and any similarities are purely coincidental.

  8. DAWN OF
    THE SECOND DAY

    -48 Hours Remain-

Don't get too comfortable with the Majora's Mask references because sadly, they'll have to go after Day 3. :< But yeah, here we go. Day 2 of this crazy challenge!

SUBJECT OF THE DAY: Favourite song from a movie.

I had originally slotted a different song for this day ("Semi-Charmed Life" by Third Eye Blind, if you're curious and trying to get dat 100% completion), but I had totally forgotten that one of my all-time favourite Coldplay songs had recently shown up in the recent movie, 'The Amazing Spider-Man' starring Andrew Garcia and the amazing Emma Stone. I think it totally worked with the scene they had it playing in, and it didn't make me dislike this song so there's a huge plus to that! Some people aren't big on Coldplay, and I can respect that, but they are one of my favourite bands, having grown up listening to their music from sources such as my dad, my cousins... etc.

  9. Day 2: Favorite song from a movie

    'In Noctem'
from Harry Potter: The Half-Blood Prince movie
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U2DpK6Z5z2Q
I almost chose 'Take to the Sky' [Owl City; Guardians of Ga'Hoole] but then I remembered In Noctem, and how truly dark and despairing and foreboding it made the corresponding scenes in Harry Potter [PLUS latin ftw].

I was hoping this day-by-day thing is more what you meant, Eebit. It feels so much more progressive and memorable.

  10. Andrew Garfield, my good sir- not Garcia! But I understand the confusion, considering Andrew Garcia is secretly very awesome and has excellent YouTube videos. :5 I hate what the judges did to him on Idol. YTF all the way.

Also, nice Majora's Mask openings for the first three days. Me likey.

And thus, my journey officially begins in this topic with...

    Day One
    Favorite song to dance to

There's actually a ton of things to choose from here, for me. Like Tyrannia, I love swing music and dance. I grew up on Sinatra with the great accompaniment of Count Basie, and so, I know a lot of great swing jazz songs that are favorites of mine. Ultimately, I've decided on a not-as-well-known classic of the Rat Pack era...

A joyous song by all means, and one that, by both vocal work and instrumentation, and even the song's name, depict the very idea of swing dance quite well. I'm not a great dancer, but this actually was the tune set to a school dance some many years ago. Good memories back there.

  11. DAWN OF
    THE FINAL DAY

    -24 Hours Remain-

...of the Majora's Mask references, of course! This'll be the last day with 'em. I enjoyed it, but now I'll need something else to be the cool/funny/NOICE reference in the top of my posts. How unfortunate. Before I cut to the chase, I'm glad you are enjoying it this way, Cerby! This was how I wanted it to go, but I s'pose it could go either way without much trouble. And Jonno, yessir, that's who I meant. I accidentally typed Garcia because (as I recall) I was listening to his videos at that time. And I realized while I was driving that I wrote it that way... and never got around to changing it. May as well leave it now for some more jokes :>

    ANYWAY. ONTO TODAY'S SONG.

SUBJECT OF THE DAY: Favourite TV theme.

Ahhhhh, Recess. Such nostalgia. I watched this show pretty well every day in elementary school either before I left in the morning (it was conveniently playing from 8:30 until 9 each morning), and later, at lunch hour when I went home for lunch. Good times. The show was always brilliant with its political undertones and awesomely-relatable storylines for a kid in the elementary school system. It's really a shame that the kids of today's society don't get to witness this show's brilliance on a day-by-day basis, instead having to be subjected to far... lesser shows in Disney's new repertoire (though I'll admit that a few are not quite that bad).

Other shows that could have taken this spot out of nostalgia were the theme from the Weekenders, Torchwood, and the Phineas and Ferb theme could have made an appearance here as well. I don't personally watch a whole lot of TV, so there aren't many that could have filled this slot, to be honest.

  12. [sup]Day[/sup] the [sub]Fourth[/sub]

Placeholder 'title card' thing until I can think of something that isn't so... boring and whatnot. Until that happens, here we go with the next day of the challenge!

SUBJECT OF THE DAY: Favourite instrumental.

I don't listen to a whole lot of instrumental music outside of Touhou remixes that Shadow throws me and video game tracks, so I guess I could have chosen one of those, but personally I ended up going with this. It's an amazing track with some incredible guitar work. Totally carries a ton of emotion in it despite the lack of accompanying lyrics. Truly a brilliant track. Plus, I am (as you will surely all find out sooner or later, in this challenge or otherwise) a huge sucker for acoustic guitar. I love the sound to it. I guess this could have been put in tomorrow's, but I've got another song in mind for that.

Well, another few. But I guess I'll narrow it down to one.

As a quick aside, a friend of mine knows how to play this in real life with very little error margin, which I find incredible in and of itself. That's how I was introduced to this song in the first place. Wicked stuff.

  13. [sup]Day[/sup] the [sub]Fifth[/sub]

Sadly, still nothing new and exciting in the title department... though as there is nothing new and exciting in this thread either, I doubt that's a problem :5 Onto today's song...

SUBJECT OF THE DAY: Favourite acoustic song.

I hope this doesn't call for an acoustic rendition of my favourite song or whatever, because this song is just too good to pass up. Sure there is a piano later on in the song, but the majority of the song is solely two acoustic guitars and some vocals. An amazing track that sounds incredibly cool. I've been dying to learn this on acoustic, but I just don't feel I have the finger-dexterity to play it just yet.

The song is absolutely brilliant, and as I love me some acoustic guitar, I could have put any number of songs here. It was incredibly tough to narrow it down to just one, but this ended up being my pick. I hope you enjoy it, for anyone who is actually clicking through this thread for my music tastes!

  14. [sup]Day[/sup] the [sub]Sixth[/sub]

Sad that I'm the only one actually consistently doing this anymore, but hey, that's okay with me! I'll just keep pluggin' away at this challenge, and I hope that whoever is reading it actually sort of digs what I'm churning out into cyberspace. Day Six of the challenge, and still going strong! Today we're looking into the merry world of covers, which I know little about other than some of the things Jonno gives me... speaking of which, I'll let today's song do the talkin'.

SUBJECT OF THE DAY: Favourite cover.

One of the commenters on the video itself puts it best when s/he states, "Good to see someone turn non-music into the real thing." Don't get me wrong, LMFAO's track has a time and a place (that being, in a club or a high school dance), but when I think of music, I don't particularly want to be leisurely listening to autotuned club-busters shaking their junk about in a speedo (whilest tanning their 'cheeks' no less!). I'd rather listen to something that actually gives off some sort of emotion, and Only1Noah's cover simply makes that happen.

He takes a Top 40, overplayed-to-all-fuck pop song and actually adds something to it.

Yes, he does. He gives it an almost-seductive spin with a beautiful rasp to his voice that apparently makes women swoon. A good friend of mine told me that girls at her music camp were talking about how if a boy had a voice like that, they'd probably just get right on into his bed and have sex with him there, so you know it's legit. I think that with the way the music industry is going, this is probably one of the most bearable things out there, and I'd highly recommend the industry take a page out of his books.

  15. [sup]Day[/sup] the [sub]Seventh[/sub]

Well, we've reached a whole week of me doing this crazy challenge. Woo! Yay for dedication! However, this is also one of the days that I don't really have much for, seeing as, well... I'll explain it in a minute.

SUBJECT OF THE DAY: Favourite funny song.

Honestly, when I listen to music, I don't listen to it to get the giggles. Today's pick comes to you solely because I am still an immature kid at heart when it comes down to it, and when I was actually like twelve, I was laughing my ass off at this song. It has basically no replay value, and is only really worth it when you're looking for something to shoot the breeze listening to with your equally-immature friends at the time.

It was a good night, though, and I will admit I laughed hard forever when I first heard the song. :p

Here we go. Two years later and I'm finally picking this challenge back up. I kind of just randomly saw this thread again as a result of some bot/guest looking at it (as I decided to peruse the Online List as I so often do). Maybe I'll get through another week before I just up and abandon the challenge, or maybe it'll inspire the rest of you to pick it back up, too! Who knows. Just for funsies, though...

SUBJECT OF THE DAY: A song from your favourite band.

I kind of remember what made me drop off on this one. I could not for the life of me pick what my 'favourite band' was! It makes sense, since I listen to a bunch of things before I sort of let them go and drift to the bottom of my iPod... but hey, I might as well give this a shot. I picked Coldplay because, universally, they are one of those bands that I always find my way back to. The incredible diversity of all of their albums - from the upbeat, mellow tunes on Parachutes, to the cold speed of X&Y, to the triumphant ballads on Viva la Vida or Death and All His Friends, all the way to the sombre chills on Ghost Stories...

Yeah. I could talk about Coldplay for a solid period of time.

I chose 'Swallowed in the Sea' because it was a song that I discovered with my iPod on shuffle one day skiing down a hill one winter. The feeling of the wind rushing through me as I inadvertently bombed my way down a hill was fantastic, and it just felt so right with the music accompanying it. 'Swallowed' also happens to be one of the songs that was playing one (admittedly drunken) night in a friend's basement, which I bonded with a friend over. She and I are/were big Coldplay fans at the time, and I distinctly remember 'out-Coldplay-ing' her at the time. We didn't end up working out (she left for university that year and I had a year of high school left) but I do have some good memories associated with this song.
