What Can We Do to Make ZEJ More Active?

Discussion in 'Suggestions' started by Eebit, May 8, 2012.

  1. We don't need an entire subforum or category for video games; that'll just divide our current activity further.

  2. I'm rather ambivalent to the entire "issue". Yes, I can see that there is a legitimate concern with video games being the predominating topic of discussion within Misc Conj, and that's to be expected, seeing how that's an easy thing to talk about. Looking at @Kudamon 's post, however, she's kind of right. At the moment, we hardly have any activity around here, no doubt due to the amount of real life stresses people need to live through. As a result, if we were to diverge this into a separate place, then we might be driving off activity further from the place we need it, like separating a river into its tributaries rather than the opposite.

If, in the future, a sudden influx of popularity comes into ZEJ (which, from the past 12 months, doesn't at all seem to be the case, unfortunately), perhaps this could be a plausible move, and one that I would prefer; however, there are just too many circumstances at hand that would just make a move like that absolutely disastrous to ZEJ, which is already in a chronic lull as it is.

  3. Currently, the official stance (as addressed by Kuda and Gist) is that there has yet to be a need to segregate the forum activity. I think that as it stands, people are perfectly capable of discussing things like politics, roleplay characters, video games, music, films, and just about anything under the sun in the Miscellaneous Conjectures 'umbrella.' Nobody is stopped from making a video game related thread (in fact, I'd love to see more threads about video games. As you said, it's a big part of what unites us as a community), but also, it keeps activity in that section up if we have all of these in one place.

My gut feeling is to keep Miscellaneous Conjectures as it is. I am always open to re-evaluating this if enough people think it is beneficial to split it off into other places, and they can prove to me the benefits of splitting it up. But, to use a metaphor that Gist didn't use, I'd rather keep the flow of one river as opposed to diverting it off into separate streams.

  4. I think we should focus on cleaning up the forum by maybe getting rid of some fluffy or redundant forums, getting some Roleplays actively going for longer than a few weeks (even if it involves shorter posts or something... please see Reaching Salvation) and people not dropping the ball on RPs.

  5. From my post in the Shoutbox thread...

Now, this brings up a problem. These issues are out of the control of anyone else here on ZEJ but the guilty parties. How do we go about with, er, fixing this? The only thing I can think of is to have Roleplay-related contests with tangible rewards, but that in and of itself brings up another problem; what would those rewards even be?

The one thing that most of us here share interest on is videogames...

But videogames are among the biggest problem. I don't really know where I'm going with this anymore and I'll just rant if I continue, so I'll stop on that note.

  6. I just don't think the whole "video games are the main topic of Miscellaneous Conjectures" has ever been an issue and don't understand the fixation on it. I see what @turbotaxer was trying to get across and understand what @Kudamon, @Gist, @Eebit, and @The Kakuzato are saying as well, but it's just, like.... Ultimately, yeah, we don't need a Video Game forum. Not at this point. I agree with Kuda on that. Our forum is nowhere near the size it needs to be to really warrant making more split boards.

On the flip side of things, if everyone else is that concerned about gaming taking up the majority of the Miscellaneous Conjecture topics.... make topics of your own unrelated to video games and try to rally some activity to those topics through your connections. That's basically it. Nothing to really flip the heck out about, in my opinion.

-- Then, of course, if you want to talk video games? Talk video games. If it's what you want to talk about, Miscellaneous Conjectures is the way to do it. It's all a non-issue and a silly thing to fixate oneself on. It's not like we'd just come upon Fuzzydude's Wego hentai collection or something.
