Tournament-Level Smash Bros. Practice?

Discussion in 'Miscellaneous Conjectures' started by turbotaxer, Apr 23, 2014.

  1. Hey all, I've emerged from the mist once again, and in the meanwhile, I've hopped aboard the Pro-level Smash Bros. train. Except I utterly suck. I have a terrible time trying to practice the technical skills involved with tournament-level play in Melee and Project M since it seems my mind just doesn't go that fast. If anyone has tried practicing any of the advanced techniques associated with these games, I'd like to ask how you practiced them and if you found a way that helped you learn the timing for the techniques.

  2. I haven't done a ton of practice with the advanced techs, but there are definitely some resources out there to help you out. Training Mode is a good place to practice so that you can slow it down to a speed that you are more comfortable at practicing, to get a feel for the visual cues as the frames go by. Gradually speed it up as you master the visual aspect, and from there, PRACTICE PRACTICE PRACTICE. Eventually, it'll become like muscle memory for you, and you can start working on stuff like integrating wavedashing into combos, or L-Cancelling under pressure.

It's really tough to get good at the game without a living, breathing opponent that can adapt to the situations that you are giving them, but tackling the AI is usually a good place to start. Once you can actively handle multiple opponents at a high level with adequate response and flexibility, it should get you in a better frame of mind to take on a single opponent.

  3. Cheers, mate. I'd happily practise with you in the event that the Wii's netplay wasn't so atrocious, and if my computer had the ability to run Dolphin's. Definitely let me know if that helped. There are places like SmashBoards and the Project M Subreddit that will definitely be able to supply you with better resources. Maybe get a video of yourself playing against some amigos and ask them to critique your play? Or get matched up with opponents through those places?

  4. That sounds like a good idea. I've been getting involved with the people in my college that competitively play Smash Bros., so they should have some setup for recording games somewhere. I've heard of SmashBoards a lot recently, so I should just sign up, as you suggested. Smash 4, though no melee or Project M should hopefully resolve the net problem of Brawl (Though they took the Final Destination meme to heart, unfortunately). I've been practicing against my roommate and level 9 computers, too. I can now somewhat reliably beat the computer, but not my roommate.

  5. At this point, I think that @turbotaxer is all but "done" with the competitive Smash scene. We'd talked about in on the phone for a bit the last time we'd talked. We've got him planned to come over sometime over the next week before his ascent back into the universi-scene, so I'll try to get him on ZEJ during that time for a brief post or two so he could perhaps update us on his ventures!

  6. Done with the competitive scene? Oh, you make me chuckle the good Chucklechuck Chateau Reserve. I still play at least weekly with folks active in my college's scene. I keep learning more and more about it, and still like talking about it, especially since I see Smash 4's scene is poppin' and Project M finally stopped updating!
