The Legend of ZEJ- Wait.... The Thread of Zelda- ...

Discussion in 'Miscellaneous Conjectures' started by Lord X-Giga-X, Jun 7, 2013.

1. When I actually stop fucking up the title, we'll have a thread for Legend of Zelda. Any aspect of the series. Discussion of games. Seeking help on the games. That.. cartoon... Whatever. This is the thread for all things Zelda.

So I'll start off with two things:

First of all, for those with a 3DS, both Oracle of Ags and Oracle of Seasons can be bought off of the Nintendo eShop for $4.99 (for the time being). A pair of games that I'd recommend trying out if you haven't already. But remember to get both for the full experience.

Second, for those who don't know, there is another game coming to the 3DS. Surprisingly, this one will take place in the same world as A Link to the Past. Here's a clip from Nintendo Direct about the game:

2. This is excellent. I loved both of those games when I was younger, and I think I'll have to pick them up again when I have spare change (and time) floating around. Ages was so much fun, and between the two games they are probably my favourite 2D Zelda titles outside of A Link to the Past, which is convenient because the 3DS Zelda is a 'sequel' to it.

I really look forward to this year of Zelda. I've sort of fallen behind on playing the titles since my Twilight Princess file got wiped in the middle of the Water Temple, so I sort of never got around to completing it. I have Skyward Sword, as well, but similarly, I just haven't gotten around to playing it. I haven't heard exceedingly good things about it, either, so I'm not sure if it's worth playing or not.
However, with the HD Wind Waker remake coming out (fingers crossed for new content, like a water dungeon to get Nayru's Pearl, as opposed to just being handed it on a silver platter...?), and this new 3DS Zelda... let's say I'm excited. That'd be understating it, though.

also MM >>>> OoT

3. Funny thing is that I've had Skyward Sword since my birthday in 2011. For some reason, I still haven't beaten it. Or Spirit Tracks. And I honestly don't know why. XD

To be more specific, in Skyward Sword, I stopped like... well, I'd like to say somewhat close to beating it. Still have like 3 more Heart Pieces/Containers to get, still got A Thing to do in Skyloft... I barely remember where I left off, but I do remember the A Thing I have to do in Skyloft before I can move on.

As for Spirit Tracks, I kinda stopped like somewhere after the third dungeon, and for some reason...
I HADN'T PLAYED IT IN YEARS! WTF?!?!?!!
And then about 2 weeks ago, I started playing again... I gotta get used to the controls again if I'm ever going to actually beat it. XD

I also haven't beaten Zelda II, and I only have one more dungeon to do in that game.

4. Am I the only one who finished Skyward Sword and actually felt a tad happy about the ending? I'm not referring to the last boss fight though (Honestly...spoilers, but Ghirahim was the best villain of the game), i'm more content with the ending scenes and how things go about. Finishing SS was a pain in the ass, though....a reaaaaal pain.
I'd give it a 7 out of 10 if any of you haven't quite played it yet.

Also since i've been disconected from everything for weeks, Wind Waker HD REMAKE???? Oh crud I'd kill for that.

5. Well, I can knock Zelda II off of the list of Zelda games I haven't beaten yet.

.... Although I'm playing through it again... What the hell's wrong with me?

6. Starr, you aren't alone. I find that Skyward Sword is greatly under-appreciated, really. The story provides what's supposedly the true origin of the Zelda series. I think that it should just be respected for what it is and how it serves itself to the series as a whole. That, and it was really charming in its presentation. I'm a sucker for an artsy Zelda title.

@Eebit, if you still haven't gotten around to beating Skyward Sword, I'd say to give it a shot sometime. I actually played the game and adored it. As much as I adore my people, much of the Zelda fan community as we both know are still entirely subjective to be pissy and whiny about minute things that don't really matter in terms of what makes a game actually good. This would be one of those instances; or at least in my opinion. xD It's a great title that is unique to the franchise in an intuitive way. There's a few niggles with the controls here or there, but nothing major. I say give it a whirl, especially if you have it already. Good God, man.

I've played both of the Oracle games as well and thoroughly have enjoyed them both, as well as Link's Awakening DX. Now that y'all mention them, I really have a hankering to pop 'em into the ol' Super Game Boy for my SNES and play them straight through again. And, hey, as far as A Link Between Worlds goes? I'm unnaturally hyped for it- possibly even more-so than I was for any other recent Zelda release, and I'm a big fan of the series! A Link to the Past is my favorite 2D Zelda by a hooklong-shot, so to hear there's some sort of spiritual sequel coming about? Totally awesome. I love the fact that we're seeing a similar overworld now; just hope they expand a bit upon it which I'm sure that they will. Love this. Very interested to see how the magical painting bit fits into the story.

As per Wind Waker HD, I don't even care if it's just a remake that pulls directly from the source material without introducing anything new. I just don't, and I know I'm an idiotic goober for saying that, but just to see that particular game re-imagined in HD on my big screen is enough for me for once. Wind Waker is my personal favorite entry in the series; it just has so much lively charm about it that will look especially good on the Wii U! I'm hoping somewhere down the road that we get a Super Mario Sunshine HD too actually... or a second one. Though that'll likely never happen. xD

7. Just got Wind Waker HD for Christmas and I must say that I have fallen in love all over again. It's reminded me why I love games with story so much, especially since I haven't played all the way through Wind Waker since it was released all the way back in the day. Forsaken Fortress is a complete bitch as usual, but the graphics and the lighting are just so impressive. Windfall brings joy to me every time I go back to it since it just looks SO GOOD. Honestly, I'm more than a little miffed that Nayru's Pearl wasn't given a dungeon to accompany it. Would have been cool to at least see an expansion in that sense, but after I finish the main quest I'll have to go back for round two in the Hero Mode or whatever.

All in all, loving it so far all over again. Wind Temple is still p. stupid with the goddamn hub room, and the Earth Temple is a bit more of a pain in the ass than I remember, but the game is super fluid. Great times.

Edit: Actually, @"Jonno", this reminded me of that old Wind Waker RP you had going back in ZEJ's early days. How would you feel about revitalizing it with something plot-intensive like I know you can come up with? Great Sea could always use some more exploration! And I'm sure you could come up with a Water Dungeon suitable of Nayru's Pearl ;D

8. Just about finished A Link Between Worlds... absolutely fantastic. I'm just hitting the final battle now, and I can definitely say that it's one of the better games that the Zelda series has spawned in recent years. Stellar game, so far. I've enjoyed just about every facet of it - from the loose storyline to the ALttP homages. I was very happy playing the game with my little sister; so much so that I ended up making my own file and playing from scratch. So much fun. I've really enjoyed it and I highly recommend it to all Zelda fans - old and new. The only qualm is the whole 'Lorule' thing. Guys please, it's clearly the Dark World. Come on.

On the other hand... Skyward Sword. Well, the storyline has been interesting so far, but I've been playing it with an irl friend of mine ( e: @Skolli ). We have agreed that the game definitely holds your hand way too much. Fi repeats literally everything that happens at least once, and is overall more useless (and in my opinion, significantly more annoying) than Navi ever could hope to be as a companion. Seriously. She had the potential to bring a cool sci-fi twist into Zelda, but her dancing, percentile chances of something NOT being Zelda, and very stiff/forced comic relief has overall just sort of shot all chance of that into the mud. Apart from that, the controls. THE CONTROLS. They have been summarized by her in about one word: janky. They are pretty atrocious, and it's pretty clear that the Big N was just trying to really force the whole 'Motion Plus' thing onto us. I'm not asking for a dark and brooding Zelda 5evur, but Fi... please.

Homoerotic Ghirahim sequences have been hilarious thus far though. We're through the first two dungeons.

9. Yo

what would a strip club in the Zelda universe be like though

10. [split] Legend Of Zelda!

With Wii U ceasing production this year and the NX surely on its way by some time in 2017, I'm 100% confident at this point that the next Zelda title is going to cross generations in the same way that Twilight Princess did when it was first released. I'm going to have to hold steady with which iteration of the game I'm going to opt for, but assuming that the NX has similar or more traditional controls compared to the Wii U as all are supposing beyond the whole rumored haptic feedback deal, I'd probably best prefer the newer console's version for what will probably be a more graphically impressive and smoother experience with beefy memory specs on the overall. Though, that's to say I'll be buying the NX when it's first out... so, it's all up in the air at this point. I'd be fine with either/or, though; I mean, it's The Legend of Zelda for crying out loud. Couldn't be any more hyped (theoretically)!

How about you all? Do you believe that the next title is hitting the NX alongside the Wii U? If so, which version, off the seat of your pants, might you opt for?

I'm gonna go out on a limb and say that this ended up not being true. :5 I absolutely adore The Wind Waker and Minish Cap, too, and am so-so towards Phantom Hourglass and Spirit Tracks. If any Zelda games outside of those abominable, but hilariously memeable CD-i titles are just not my cuppa, it may be them, though I did like Spirit Tracks quite a bit more than PH and actually ended up finishing it. It's just that, from that point on, it's like a 6.5/10 in a series chockful of 10/10s.

Also, playing Twilight Princess all over again on the Wii U is such a fresh experience. Even though I'd already beaten it at 100% before on the Wii, it feels so much better to control Link in the traditional style with the GamePad instead of the Wii remote - especially considering those """advanced motion controls""" that had been toted back in '06. :5 Pair this with truly fantastic dungeons (perhaps my favorite in the series, actually, despite the rather easy bosses) and overall great storyline (especially for a Zelda title), and it may edge out as a personal favorite of mine just behind Wind Waker, yet.

Also,

Ask Flamezone.

11. Rumor has it that we're going to be able to choose between a male and female lead for the next Zelda title. What are your thoughts on this? Personally, I don't see the big deal, if it were to be true. Being meant to act as a "link" between the player and the game, it would've made sense from the beginning for a gender option to be made available in the series. It's true that Link has developed into far more than the standard player avatar since his inception, but that is more for the lively expressions that the character has been able to develop as it has gone on. Establishing a female Link? Big deal. Of course, I'd be all for a playable female character that ends up being entirely different from Link, too, but this, regardless of the specifics, is a step in the right direction, in my opinion.

The best part is, if you're a woman who enjoys playing as a male Link, you can keep on doing that. To encourage empowerment in boys and girls in being able to make that choice, otherwise, is pretty neat. This would hurt no one and benefit plenty. It'd probably even benefit Nintendo's sales with the PR push it would get after such an announcement, honestly. Good move, I think.

12. I feel like @Skolli and I might have talked about this at some point. If not, I bet they'd have some interesting thoughts on this being the huge Zelda nut that they are.

I myself don't have a huge issue with a female Link existing. I mean, I guess I can understand why people would be up in arms over the decision inasmuch as Link is a classic character with an "established" history and mythos behind him or whatever, but is it really going to kill the franchise to have a female playable character? I doubt that. Although I haven't actually witnessed any backlash to the rumour... in fact, I think this is actually the first I've heard of it!

I'm sure that there would've been other ways of handling a playable female character that could've been received better. I think Link is androgynous enough that it doesn't seem super necessary to be like "LOOK! BOOBS! We're so progressive haha!". Maybe actually empowering Zelda herself as a playable character in something not on the CD-i? Would that be so radical a departure from the franchise?

All that said, "Linkle" was such a dumb name for a female Link character. Let's hope the ZeldaU does it better.

13. @Eebit - What gives me hope in regards to Linkle is that this was more of a product of a Koie Tecmo crossover than any individual thoughts on Nintendo's behalf. A cutesy one-offer wanting to be Link but not quite living up to it in direct fashion... isn't quite so parallel or empowering, really. I'm sure that, at least in these regards, it'll be better. As far as producing an option to create a female Link that is parallel to the male original isn't quite controversial, either, as you'd said.

For me, it's to the point where, obviously the series will continue successfully without a female Link counterpart and would be totally great and fine still, but in regards to the character's inception of being a "link" between the player and the game, I can also see where people would want that extra inclusiveness. Hell, I'd go one step further and toss in a skin color dial, as well. Link will always be Link. He has been around for a long time and I can understand the hesitation, though I also don't see his major appearances being anything but his classic design and gender anyway, so I don't see the big point from that marketing or legacy perspective, honestly. He's so much more than the traditional avatar given his long history, which has certainly given leeway to craft a special identity, but I feel like we lose nothing by avoiding the female Link and gain something by tossing her right on in. It's a seamless, non-story-intensive, not-so-socially-controversial move that would only attract more gamers. Really- I don't want to think about what the few who would actually not buy a Zelda title because of her inclusion would even be like, because it takes some ridiculously stupid, borderline sexist logic to get there, really.

With that said, if they were to add onto the plot and make a plausible means for a Zelda, Impa, a new female character that isn't Linkle, or what have you to take center-stage to provide a totally unique angle aside from Link, I'd certainly be up for taking that, too, since it means they've crafted something truly unique that will have everyone playing the game even further for what meaningful expansion it would bring to the gameplay and plot. We'll see what happens, including if this rumor actually ends up correct! Normally I'd say it would be, but this is Nintendo we're talking about here. :5

14. I'm just going to leave this here. Enjoy the flowing tears of nostalgia.

15. @Skolli called Skyward Sword a mess on Miitomo and I figured I'd respond here because I would just get over-length on that darned app with its blasted word count. :5 As much as I would want to disagree because I still loved most of my time through the game, flying on a Loftwing, engaging in vibrant scenery across a vast world that Nintendo obviously poured tons from out of their coffers to produce, it was mared by the meticulous nature of being probably the most boring Zelda experience to date when you take away all of the cosmetic frills and grand characters like Groose and judge it purely by a gameplay perspective. Too much backtracking and funny controls and all of that stuff. Even if it were that I generally enjoyed the storyline, I remember multiple times where fetch quests and those damn Guardian quests made it feel like a chore that took forever to get done.

But I've loved the series. I have had a passing like for Skyward Sword and the Adventures of Link and have loved every single game to nearly the same degree of awe aside from them. I have real faith that this upcoming Zelda is going to be the best one yet, and I almost have a feeling that it won't even be close. Exciting times are upon us, friends. Exciting times.

16. I agree, I have a deep love for Zelda games! I liked the story in skyward sword but it was completely lost in the wasteland of pointless fetch quests, non-optional side missions that ultimately lead nowhere and provided nothing to the story, and extremely wonky control mechanics among other things.

Long (rambling) rant ahead, read at your own risk.
Even the optional side missions were kinda tedious. The spirit realm missions were FUKGNIGN SO STRESSFUL, FUCK; no left handed controls -which made the already clunky motion+ controls that much more difficult, and... the enemies!!! I literally died like twice fighting a single skulltula in the first? dungeon because the fighting was not intuitive at all lol. I appreciate what they were trying to do but I found it more of a hindrance than anything else.
It was also really repetitive for no reason whatsoever???? apart from padding the ~gameplay hours~ idk. Fighting the imprisoned 3 fucking times??? I was so angry when I had to fight it RIGHT AFYER beating it for the second time. Or certain times in the story where you couldn't fast travel for literally no reason and they make you traverse the entire map to get to a boss that you have to fight AGAIN.
The game pointlessly repeated instructions that NPCs literally just told you. It took so long for me to painfully struggle through the quagmire of pointless quests that i actually started forgetting what the overarching plot was. Like that time in the sand ocean where youre wandering around in the boat w that captain robot, El Douchebag? and hes like "yo i think this is the right place" so you wander around, play through a really awesome mine cart roller coaster, fight a fucking mini-boss, and then....nothing?? all you get is an "oops, this was the wrong island KEK". if this had been optional, or if the roller coaster was some sort of hidden fun thing for you to do, that would be awesome. but i meandered though this mini dungeon and got LITERALLY NOTHING for the hour it took to get through it.

fuck ok i could go on for HOURS about the beef i have with this game and honestly I think it's because I love the LOZ series so much, it will always be my favourite video game series and SS really disappointed me. I think Skyward Sword pissed me off so much because it just didn't compare to older Zelda games, it meandered and didn't know where it wanted to go. Compare it to Majora's Mask (probably my all-time favourite game?) which is incredibly difficult, but every challenge feels rewarding once you've completed it. SS just felt like it was wasting my time.

THings I actually really enjoyed with SS: the music! great like always. I really enjoyed the character designs! the water dragon guy looked pretty cool. the time crystals were pretty cool, I loved sailing around in the boat w the time crystal in it. Flying was great!!! I am a huge sucker for any game that gives me as many transportation options as they can! the plot was neat but it fell apart because i could never remember what was supposed to be happening because i was too busy doing a pointless fetch quest lol

lol this is a trainwreck, im sorry!! just goes to show i really shouldnt multitask, i have trouble focusing enough as it is. (this window has been up for almost 2 hours while i jumped around from thing to thing) hopefully ti makes a little sense though? //sigh

ANYWAY im super hyped for the upcoming Zelda and I really hope they drop the shitty pointless quest padding and go back to tricky puzzles that actually require some thinking. Judging by the fact that it keeps getting delayed, Im holding out hope that it means theyre putting as much effort into this game as they can.

17. Man I miss falling asleep to you yelling at the TV...

18. I was hoping Skolli would ramble on about this and I'm not disappointed. I love people who are passionate about Zelda! Which makes this next bit funny, since I would say it's because I am too, yet I'm gonna just respond to the elongated text with the umbrella response of "agreed" and ask what it is about Majora's Mask that makes it their overall favorite game of all time to maybe elicit another entertaining and neat rant. :p Also, what is your favorite "traditional" top-down Zelda title?

19. Heh!

Oh man. Ok. there are so many things that I love about MM. it's really creepy! the atmosphere is so spooky and melancholy. i love that it's a loose continuation from OoT but youre wondering "where am I? who are all these people that are basically like alternate universe versions of people i met in the previous game?". I love that they took the time travelling from OoT and utilized it on a smaller scale, and it becomes a key part in solving certain puzzles.
The masks!! it's such a cool feature, ive never played another game that has mechanics like this, i can actually play as a zora - life goals complete. but srsly tho, there are so many cool abilities that you get with the masks! and its such a satisfying challenge trying to get every single one of them (i was seriously so fucking thrilled when i obtained every mask, the last one i needed was the one from the Kafei & Anju quest and holy shit. so difficult at the end there but so worth it.)
Motha fuckin Deity Link!!!!! man oh man what a cool way to do a boss fight, shit! and the giants mask when youre fighting that worm!! all of the boss fights were really great actually.
Back to the creepiness of the game, the part where link screams when he puts on a transformation mask really freaked me out the first time i played lol (definitely not the cheerful nintendo games 7yr/o me was used to playing) and one time i fast forwarded to the end of the third day just because i was curious to see what happened and let me tell u, even today if i hear the music that plays when the moon falls, nothing freaks me out more. like i literally go cold and the hair on the back of my neck stands up lol. also the many dead, undead, half-dead, etc characters roaming around the game certainly lends to the creepiness as well.
The puzzles are varied and all of them are really challenging! theres no hand-holding whatsoever and thats the way i feel it should be.

anyway i could go on forever about how much i love this game but i think ill stop here lol

as for my favourite top down classic zelda game, I havent been able to play too many of them! i have the first two original zelda games (which are really damn challenging, jeez haha) and ive played a little bit of A Link to the Past and Links Awakening i think??? i dont own them, i cant remember where i played them and it was so long ago that i dont really remember much about the games themselves :( need to download a gameboy emulator haha
for the newer handheld games, i really enjoyed Spirit Tracks and Phantom Hourglass though! A Link Between Worlds is really fun too. i had 4 swords for the gamecube which was alright - it didnt have the depth of other zelda games - and the newer 4 swords game as well (the anniversary edition i think its called???)

How about you? what are your favourite zelda games?
