Tales of Alidaire: The Struggle

Discussion in 'Statistical Roleplays' started by Masquerade, Jul 19, 2011.

  1. It begins.

And it did. Despite having not dealt with demons and other inherently evil entities before, the White Knight knew exactly what to do: be on her guard, be careful, and stay alert. There was no telling what they could exactly do, but the flying Imps seemed to be obnoxiously agile... and the mass shielded by the corner lay unmoving, perhaps even waiting? Nevertheless, she took a step forward--a moment of hesitation--before running past Lady Alexandra and up to the nearest being. Taking chances, she aimed a diagonal, swinging upwards blow at the airborne Imp, immediately stepping back should it manage to dodge it.

"There should be a faster way of dealing with these things." she stated, gazing around shortly. The others were either preparing or already attacking, and the enemies were few... but there was no telling. She didn't plan on spending her Mana this early either, for something told her that the last one would be specially troublesome. I hope I'm not right.

  2. Stry waited for his allies to move past him... though, with the exception of Mai, the enclosed space seemed to make movement difficult. It certainly prevented them from properly spreading out. Which Stry himself didn't particularly like, but then, such was the way of battle. He sidled forward, ending up just behind Kat- behind the wall of his clearly stronger allies and near the Rookie Bowman who had seemed so adamant against his presence.

The Kitsune gave her a mildly curious look as she spoke, not really knowing what she was talking about. "You know... after this is done with, I'll have to ask you ladies what's really going on," Stry commented, but then shrugged. "However, time and place. And this certainly is not." With that, he fell silent, quickly analyzing the demonic opposition. Not close enough to assure himself with, not soon enough to lend a helping flame. But he didn't waste his time. Pulling out the flash of potion he'd ignored in the last battle, he quickly downed it, waiting for the chance to help...

Alexandra was set to destroy. However, the noble's attention was drawn as Helena began to question further about what it was that they were looking for exactly. They didn't exactly have a lot of time to talk things out, so now was the best time as ever. The more they knew about what they were about to delve into, the better, but even Alexandra could only offer educated guesses at this point. "Yes, Masquerade thinks the magic has been cast by a Restocasian, but in order to execute the spell, they would have had to set up some kind of source...which should be in the storage room just beyond the undercroft. Whether the person who cast it is there or not...well, that remains to be a mystery..." Alexandra spoke confidently until she reached the last part, her voice turning into naught but a mutter. Restocasians were the holders of the world's mana. They voluntarily shared it with humans, but just as they gave it, so could they easily take it away. To fight a Restocasian meant to fight without mana which is impossible, for Restocasians can best humans in not only magic, but physical combat as well. If they ran into a Restocasian in the storage room who meant them ill will, there was a large chance that they would not walk out of the castle alive. Alexandra drew in a sharp breath. "Let us just fight on. The truth will be revealed to us in such a short time," she suggested, thrusting her saber into the air. Light particles began to streak through the air and gather at the tip of her weapon until they formed a solid, radiant sphere which quickly burst out, loosing projectiles of light that surged overhead to strike the demons that were the farthest away, ignoring the one that was nearby.

"As for you, stow it," Alexandra shot at Stry. She couldn't believe he even had the nerve. "You're at our mercy right now. We don't have time to linger and tell you everything unless someone wants to fill you in on things now," she explained to the guy sharply. The way things were, Mai could cleave him in half if need be, and if she didn't, Alexandra would take the deed upon her own shoulders. Already she had decided to do anything necessary for her country, even if the deeds didn't appear the most noble. How many lives had she already taken? What would be one more added to the list? Nothing, that's what. At the end of the day, I'm more of a killer than a noble, but I've...I've done what I had to do, she thought to herself, her visage practically glowing in the residual light energy lingering behind. Her eyes were still ablaze with adamant determination, and she was NOT giving up now. Nothing would stand in her way.

    Alexandra waits.

Kat casts Firebolt on Cerit! 16 Fire Dmg! (INT) [Chance of Burn]

    MP: 37/45

Kat didn't lose her cool as she watched her flaming projectile be agilely dodged by the flying demon. That was the importance of the practice shot, after all. If anything, a trace of a smirk crossed her face. It seemed that a little self-scolding had worked in assuaging her worries for the moment. That was a good thing. Maybe now she could actually focus on her aim, however, she struggled to ignore what Alexandra was saying. That was NOT what she needed to hear right now. Then again, the noble forgot to mention that there are plenty of humans capable of casting powerful and advanced magic. No worries. No worries. Lowering her bow, Kat held a hand out and gathered a sphere of blazing fire that she wasted no time in hurling at the demon that she had missed. If that didn't hit, then she would be upset, but until then, she kept her reflexes sharp, and that smirk certainly didn't fade. Not yet. She couldn't let herself be dragged down into the depths of anxiety again. It would do nothing but throw her off of her game, and she needed to be top form to keep up with the others. They were depending on her just like she depended on them.

  4. Mai recoiled as she immediately felt the retaliating strikes of both flying demons, first a small trident pierced against her which she shrugged and pushed off, but the second being an overwhelming strike of pure darkness. She brought her blade to block it, but the orb didn't cease its advance; transparently sliding through Earthbound, it made its way directly into Mai's body, the impact striking her like any physical strike. Hitting the ground, she gripped herself painfully. Her body seemed devoid of any actual strike; but then again, the strike was never meant for physical damage. Mai panted as her vision blurred in and out, her very spirit being the one manipulated and affected by the blob of darkness hurled into her being. She could feel it, tearing at her and leaving her in a painful mass of spiritual break. Mai gripped her blade as she called forth the aid of her power, an immediate rush of relief as a slight glow dispersed the continued assault on her spirit.

Panting, Mai pulled herself back up, gripping her chest. She could feel the spiritual turmoil it had caused inside her; the very vitality of battle she once had altered slightly. She looked over up at one of the closest flying imps, glaring slightly as she attempted to boost her spirit once more. "Nothing will keep me down," she replied to no one in particular, pulling her blade up to emphasize the severity of her words. No one.

  5. Hikari moves to E6 (D7 - E7 - E6).

Even though the weapon looked, to an extent, a burden to the flying demon, the attack launched by it was unexpectedly quick. Fortunately, not only she wasn't caught off-guard, but with her current armor and position ensured minimal damage would be taken--and it was effective. With only a minor pierce through the steel of her armor, the White Knight circled the Imp, and struck once with Absolute Eye. The winged creature would be down soon, provided it did not use its agility to evade anymore attacks... The conversation between Helena and Alexandra, although particularly the Noble's response, reached her ears at the time. It made her wonder.

"A Restocasian...?" she mumbled to herself, eyeing the door, still guarded by the monsters before them, practically awaiting to be opened. So close, yet so far... for now.

  6. Stry raised an eyebrow at Alexandra's hostile response. He hadn't even tried to be snide that time. "Now, now, Your Highness, I didn't mean anything by it." The tone was condescending again, but underneath was a subtle undertone of sincerity. "Did I not say this wasn't the time for explanations?" He shrugged, giving a slight grin. His five tails fanned out as his slate-gray eyes left Alexandra to focus on the monsters. This would take some time- both the battle, and the group trusting him.

It was the least he could do to help before they decided the Kitsune would just be a burden.

Staying behind the others, his gaze flicked to Kat. "Need a bit of help, there, Kat?" He asked quietly, very little inflection to his tone besides the slight amusement and a vaguely defined curiosity. Without waiting for a response, Stry held out a clawed hand to the girl, a swirl of energy forming around his forearm before shooting at Kat- but instead of hitting her, it merely swirled around her, giving a sense of increased power from a guided hand. Stry nodded to Kat in a wordless "you're welcome".

    Satisfaction.

Essentially the only word that could describe what Helena felt towards the way the noble had responded to her question. Her curiosity had been sated, but not, perhaps, by the person she had been expecting to answer the question. A certain sense of tension rippled through the air, as Helena had realized that it was quite possible that Kat was previously romantically involved with the source of Alexandra's troubles... and yet, here they were. Fighting alongside one another. Helena did not want to voice anything further, knowing full well that Kat was having an internal battle. Conflicted, certainly, over what was to come...

Was it a blessing that I asked Nanila her future...? Or has it put something toxic into 'er... Helena mused silently. She held a lot of respect for Kat. The woman had kept her sheer sense of cool thus far. In fact, as Helena gave her a sidelong glance, it seemed that she was smirking... smirking at what, Helena wondered? She had missed her shot - something Helena had been doing a lot lately, in the presence of this group. She muttered to Kat, "Guess this lot ain't rallying our collective aim all too well..." She shrugged, and cut past the woman. Her innermost thoughts would have to wait until another time, for instinctively, the rookie bowman knew that the time was not now to be expressing anything further. If that idiot fox-boy, with his snide remarks and blithering babble, knew any one single thing, it was that the heat of battle was not a place for idle chatter. And speaking of him, it took every ounce of willpower that she had to not drill a hole in him with one of her arrows in the midst of the battlefield, seeing as how Alexandra's scolding of him had not even dampened his slick-tongued, demeaning nature.

Things were tense. Moreso than they had been when fighting the guards, which almost shocked Helena. How could they go about slaying their own kind with such ease, but when the time came to face demons in the castle, they were so tense with one another? She could not answer her own mental question, and so, she decided to take a wild shot at the nearest monster... one of the flying imps. She drew a pair of arrows to her bow - the glyph-enfused bolt she had pilfered off of the assailants of Alexandra already attached and pulsating with Mana, whereas she channelled her own pooled Mana to the second arrow. A new tactic that she had been itching to unleash.

"Well, if ya can't hit the bastards with one arrow, let's give two a go..." She spoke mainly to Kat, whom she figured she would need to exchange techniques with once the storming of the castle was over. She let her set of arrows loose from her bow, hoping that the distance was not great enough to keep her from striking true on the invaders of the castle. The alien force. The ones that do not belong. Helena thought to herself... A blinking-fast thought passed through her head as she feared just whatever it was that could conjure such horrid beast fiends to a place of so-called righteousness...

    Alexandra waits.

"I'm not quite caring what you say at the moment; I have more important things to think about," Alexandra didn't hesitate to snap back, the grip on her saber tightening as she imagined herself running the fox-boy through with said weapon. It would be better to just kill him and move on because he was a complete hassle to deal with. He really didn't get it. If he ran his mouth too much, he would die. I won't hesitate to kill him. I've killed people who deserved it less than that asshole, she thought, but felt a chill run down her spine. She looked around herself in a panic before gazing forward to see one of the flying imps casting some sort of spell on her. Dark runes flashed into existence around her and her body convulsed before she was forced to her knees, dropping her saber on the ground with a clatter. Mist as black as night swirled about her and she clutched her head, tears of blood trickling out of her eyes. She screamed. In her mind, she scolded herself; the last thing they needed was to alert anyone in the castle to their position. Still, the pain overwhelmed her, and it really wasn't that great, but she felt so sick to her stomach. Nauseated. Her head pounded with great force, and she felt as if some part of her being was slipping away. Eventually the pain faded and she coughed a few times. She stood up shakily and brushed herself off, making sure to collect her weapon, though now her grip upon its handle was quite slack, her former strength dissipated.

"D-damn...what was that?" Alexandra panted miserably, coughing a few more times into her hand. She gazed at her palm to see crimson blood staining it. She felt so sick and down in the dumps all of a sudden. It must have been the doing of the demon in the distance. She glowered at it, the imp smirking back at her, holding back what seemed to be a laugh. As much as she wished she could teach the thing a lesson, with things as cramped as they were, there was just no way at the moment, so she focused on keeping herself from fainting, for her body still wavered slightly as if she could lose her balance at any moment.

Kat casts Firebolt on Vile! 20 Fire Dmg! (INT) [Chance of Burn]

    MP: 31/45

Since the only male in their midst seemed so content with himself, Kat didn't vocalize her appreciation which she didn't quite feel anymore because of his smug nature. She didn't think too much past that anyway. Her mind was on the evasive little demons she failed to hit time and time again. She found a more pleasant ally nearby, Helena, and gave the archer a very affirming not at her comment, trying to keep her expression on the more lighthearted side. "Apparently they are not because I can't land a single hit," she said in a mockingly disconcerted voice. Most of the imps had been destroyed now, their lithe, winged bodies falling to the floor. Something had rounded the corner that she didn't expect--a brute of a demon who seemed to have assaulted Mai, but the woman proved to be too fast for it to hit luckily, for the demon seemed physically powerful. Powerful, but not very evasive. "Maybe it's just the aerial targets; grounded ones are easier to hit, yeah?" she commented, tilting her head a bit as she gathered flames in the palm of her hand. The conversation was actually helping her focus, driving off the troubling thoughts she had been having before. The flames formed a sphere which she promptly tossed through the air, the fireball zipping with amazing speed towards the demon that had just made its appearance from around the corner, hopefully hitting it this time.

Half the demons depleted, and I don't see these last two lasting for much longer either. I need to know the truth, Kat thought determinedly. Whether it was a good truth or a bad truth, it didn't matter. Kat would not settle for a lie, no matter how traumatizing it might turn out to be. I am strong. My life.......... her thoughts trailed off and her mind nearly became blank.

    Kat waits.

  9. Mai smiled with satisfaction upon seeing the little devils fall. These spawns of evil weren't going to have an easy time, and she definitely wasn't going to be the one delivering that easy time if there were to be one. She was going to obliterate these evil essences from this place, for the good of not only Alexandra, but for all. They have no right here, She thought, swinging her blade again as she prepared to strike out. He advance was cut short as the large husky demon pulled up in front of her, swinging its large fists at her in an attempt to debilitate her. The advance was so immediate, so swift that Mai actually had frozen for a moment....

But only for a moment. Swiftly Mai retreated slightly to dodge to blow that would've rendered her a few broken bones and probably permanent head trauma, catching herself as she quickly improvised her next move. On the ball of her toe, Mai twirled around, using the momentum of her dodge to pull her blade around, powerfully striking the Miscreant with a whir of metal through flesh. Mai then swung her blade upward in quick succession, catching from under the demonic being in an attempt to gut it. Mai then took a step back, marveling and immediately laughing at what seemed to be her own joke. A bloody cross would be splayed onto the miscreant's chest, gorily torn in by Mai's own doing. A joke unintended, but definitely something worth a slap on the knee in her opinion.

Helena grinned as her first target fell in a bleeding mass of darkness. It pleased her, purging the castle of these intruders. Made for a bit more of a classic hero's tale, as opposed to assassinating two people who believed that they had done nothing wrong... after all of these attempts on others' lives. It was a deadly game that she had stepped into, this she was well aware of. Wouldn't even be here if I didn't hear the voices in my 'ead. She thought, silently reflecting on the events that had taken place so recently, but seemed so far away. She suddenly felt overcome with a sense of longing for a more innocent time - free of the political game of corrupt kings and an assassin's guild...

She sighed. It was a far cry from her days of learning how to hunt and fend for herself. But this was no time for reminiscing on time spent in the past. She looked back to her opponents, and heard Kat assessing the situation with the incredibly hulklike beast rounding the corner. It really was a brute of a monster, Kat was right. But it also seemed like Mai would handle it well on her own. She spoke back to Kat, "That bloody clunker? Hardly target practice for skilled archers like us." Helena favoured her ally with a wry grin, obviously mocking their horrid luck with the shots taken at the enemies. "Wouldn't you prefer something a tad more... skill-testing?" Speaking normally with Kat again was nice. Felt almost as though there wasn't a substantial amount of tension in the room. As though their leader was not sickly, and most of all, as though there were no pressure of what lay beyond in the undercroft.

The rookie bowman inhaled deeply, as though clearing her mind. The stuffy, underground air was mingling with the scent of the decay and carnage of their tussle with the demons... God, it'd be nice to get the hell outta here, she thought to herself. It was certainly an eventful ride, but she hated the smell of death. It hit far too close to home for her liking. She drew her bow close, placing an arrow upon the string. She held it at her sides for a moment, bowstring slacked and arrow simply between her fingers. She prodded Hikari in the back with the weapon. "Let's finish this'un off real quick," she spoke to the woman, nodding her head at the smaller, winged imp that grinned at Alexandra, who looked sickly and much more frail than when Helena had last glanced at her. What trickery was the demon up to...?

She stepped carefully past Hikari into the mouth of the tight corridor, seeing it open into a much more spacious room. More like a hive for the demonic... she thought to herself, deciding better of speaking such a thought aloud in the presence of the noble. She pulled her bow taut, testing its weight. A golden light seemed to cascade over the arrow, collecting into the arrow's tip. It lit up the room brightly for a moment before Helena released it, letting it seek its target. From the tip, two minuscule energy bursts of pure Light Mana were released, rapidly enclosing on the remaining imp. The arrow itself seemed to ignite with the ethereal, artificial glimmer of Mana, and surged towards the monster as well. Job well done...? Helena smiled and thought to herself, averting her eyes as the light intensified... Had she hit? Would it be over...? Only time would tell.

  11. Hikari moves to E3 (E6 - E5 - E4 - E3).

"Right, just--" she replied, but stopped herself as Helena herself acted before anything else could be said. Hikari blinked at the light that suddenly shrouded the entire hallway in a contrast of illumination as the magical arrows collided with the creature. "Nevermind." she shrugged, raising her weapon to follow immediately with an attack of her own. It would go down.

One would have expected Hikari to be considerably slowed by the weight of her armor, but the motion was deceptively quick. She halted, twisting her leg on the spot to allow herself to turn as well. This was accompanied by an horizontal swipe with the wooden, light blue mace that would strike the Imp with the full force of her momentum behind. Not caring whether she had hit it or not, the White Knight swung again to complete an imaginary cross-shaped pattern.

  12. Stry shrugged. "If you say so, Your Highness." His tone had changed somewhat, less condescending, but more of a disregarding tone. The Kitsune wasn't grinning anymore- perhaps he'd gotten the message. He found it rather difficult to keep an eye on the fight with everyone in the way of his line of sight, so he craned his head, ears pricked forward, and tried to make sense of the cluster of fighters.

That was when the grin came back.

"Though, allow me to help here..." Stry drawled as he slipped in right behind Alexandra. His tone was almost amused, not quite smug, but definitely confident. Without warning a burst of mana shot past the heads of everyone in the corridor, headed straight for the large, hulking demon. The Kitsune stood half at ease, half in a fighting stance, his clawed hand still raised with the remaining swirls of mana that eventually dissipated and faded into the air around him. His slate eyes were narrowed slightly, his ears perked and tails bristling. Despite the grin still on his face, at least it was apparent he was willing to get his hands dirty.

  14. Once again, the obstructions on their path to the truth had been vanquished. Alexandra would have rushed straight off, but she found herself in dire need of at least a moment of recovery as she wiped the blood from her face and out of her eyes. She still felt like shit, but things were slowly getting back into perspective and the noble found herself able to stand with ease, regaining her balance a bit at a time. Her hands were shaking, and she noticed something slip out from...her weapon?...and land on the floor gently. Sheathing said weapon, she crouched down and picked the paper up, eying it suspiciously. Was it some sort of receipt from the rebel's armory that the vendor had tucked in it? Upon closer inspection, Alexandra realized that this was far from the case. Elegant script was printed on the paper, and seemed to be a letter of sorts. "To he or she who is to inherit my legacy..." Alexandra read the page to herself. "Years and years ago, I went on a quest to gain knowledge of every monster on Dalmaschior in hopes that the troops would be able to make use said knowledge. I fought with many monsters, analyzing their behavior and fighting styles, while even going as far as to learn moves from them. A blue mage--that was what I had become. I started as an apprentice scholar, but look where I wound up. I composed a tome of my knowledge, but when it came time for me to return to Archaea, I was not welcome there, for our previous ruler had been overthrown and replaced with a vile thug. Against the new tyrant I fought, and I lost. However, this country is too important for me to give up. I write this note with my final breaths on hand. I have hidden the tome, and it will only be able to be found by a masterful blue mage such as myself. Whoever holds this weapon in their hand...you must do good for Dalmaschior...and for the name of the blue mage..." Alexandra paused and took a breath, coughing a few times. She looked down at her hand and was glad to see no new blood. "Signed The Legendary Blue Mage, Questral." As she uttered the name, Alexandra felt a surge of energy course through her body. Her balance became perfect and breath became steady and strong. There was a flame in her eyes now whereas before there was naught but blood and tears.

"The power of the blue mage, huh?" Alexandra let the statement drift from her lips and fall upon the air, a sigh of content following suit. Questral. She had never heard of such a fellow in Dalmaschior's history, but it seemed like he was a noble, just like she was. He selflessly ventured out into the wilds of the country in order to help it through his knowledge. He would make for a good role model for Alexandra. Because I'm going through with it. I'm going to be a blue mage...even though I don't really know what that entails... At this, she became a bit distraught, but maybe she would be able to find out more about it later. For now, there were more important things to take care of. She tucked the letter into her dress and pressed on down the corridor and around the corner. She opened the door to the undercroft and waited for the others.

With the monsters down, Kat shook her head and put a hand on Helena's shoulder. "I'm pretty confident with my skill. With things as urgent as they are...well, there's always room for challenges later on, yeah?" the woman responded lightheartedly, gesturing towards Alexandra who was reading something aloud to herself. Something about blue magic. However, the noble, in the hurry that she was, rushed off down the corridor before anything could be said. There was no doubt she was ready to move forward, though Kat definitely had her apprehensions which she hoped she could guise. The sound of a door opening could be heard, but no more footsteps. It seemed as though Alexandra was going to wait for them this time. "I guess we get a minute for a break," she pondered aloud to her fellow archer, taking in a deep, definitely deserved and needed breath. It had been nothing but mayhem since they entered the castle which wasn't supposed to be the case, but whoever was behind the treachery at the castle had made sure to cover his or her bases well, something that perturbed Kat. Whoever was behind this...put a ton of thought into it. I'll be glad when this is over...I'm getting so tired of thinking about this stuff...

  15. Stry took a breath, stretching out his arms for a few seconds. "Well, that was a nice distraction," He commented dryly. Once more, he'd taken no blows and had expended little of his energy, but this time it wasn't so much evasion as lack of opportunity. His ears twitched as he glanced towards Alexandra, who seemed to be reading aloud something she'd picked up off the ground. While his glance only lasted a few seconds before he took to looking around, he kept careful track of the Noble's words. Old tomes and blue mages and enchanted weapons... Heh, this is becoming even more interesting. He merely looked up to watch the Noble run for the door, but gave a slight chuckle at Kat's words.

"A moment of rest helps us all do our best," He said, grinning at the rhyme. He held himself calmly, looking at each of his... "allies", though they didn't seem to consider him as such. Something flickered in his eyes as he considered this, and his grin faded for an instant, but it returned quickly enough. He doubted one of them would actually kill him for simply being annoying. They'll either tolerate me for now and ditch me at the next opportunity... or let me tag along longer and learn to bear with it. Either way, might as well learn what I can while I have the chance. He straightened up slightly, giving Helena a curious look. "So, what was that you were saying about a Restocasian? I haven't been with you ladies long enough to pick up on your... previous conversations." For once he held back the chuckle, but it showed in his slate-gray eyes.

  16. Mai sighed with relief as the last beast felled to the group's strikes, immediately calling upon everyone to slow their pace to the point where, as she looked around, saw people relieving themselves to a rest. Mai slowed herself, sheathing her earthen blade and leaning back against one of the walls. Never before had she gone through battles as quickly as this past week. Sure, she was pushed to her limit, but these moments in time were the ones truly pushing her to her limit. She felt it too; in moments her bruised and scarred legs began to quiver slightly, causing the proud Dragon Apprentice to falter slightly. She winced, gritting her teeth as she stayed in her position. She couldn't give into it, not now. With a hope of distracting herself, pulling herself back to the moment, she looked about, only to suddenly realized what she just ran back into.

    Memories.

This ragtag group that had formed from seemingly nothing but a whisper from something had congregated and now were as a common group she saw back up at her place in the mountains. And it only made it worse. Like up in the mountains, the group here had become just like how everything became up at the temple. She was forgotten. Sure, she was part of this group, but she knew she wasn't. It felt the same being among the group she had trained with all her life. The fact that everyone else to some degree had made some emotional attachment to one another, that they had bonded as an actual group, a communion, not just a bunch of fighters. The bitter taste of resentment rose in Mai's throat as all congregated together to share the quick rest. Sure, this new fellow didn't seem accepted, but Mai already knew that with time, this boy would be like the others.

    Belonging.

The word sizzled in her brain, causing her to close her eyes. Just like at the temple, she was the one to not belong. It was as obvious as anything to her, for it stuck out like a thorn among grass, or a stump among trees. Back at the mountains, Mai had no problem with not being accepted into the group; being the only woman to take on dragon apprenticeship, she fought her best to become who she was now, she proved herself. But now, among a new crowd in a new area, not even her skills could make her respected. The old wound from long ago was open again, bleeding out and causing a massive pang in her heart. Hiding the pain with the heavy tiredness of her panting, she simply leaned her head back against the cold dungeon wall, hoping the thoughts would race away from her, that maybe she could continue this without another thought to it. But the thought always arose again and again; when this was all over, what would she be to this group? What would she be?.....

  17. Job well done, indeed.

The thought resounded in her mind as she saw - with great satisfaction - that her multitude of shots had indeed hit their mark, and the monster had fallen prey to the collaborative efforts of the group. It was certainly something Helena considered a bang-up job, eliminating the demon scum from the castle. Not that she had all that much care for the nobles outside of Alexandra, due to her previous encounter with the madman who had left the poor to suffer so easily. But on the other hand, she thought, glancing at Alexandra herself who seemed to be caught up in reading a piece of crumpled up parchment that she had found, can't always judge a book by its cover, I s'pose. Helena chuckled and shook her head. Letting the royal take her time and have her space with her independent studies, she found herself once again caught up in the comforting company of the enigmatic Kat.

The young woman's touch on her shoulder was relaxing. A great change from the tensity of the stale, underground, noxious air of the battle. It seemed that Kat was equally content with the way the battle had gone, and the way that her strategy had panned out. "Guess I shouldn't be questioning the skill of someone so obviously my superior," Helena conceded with a modest and joking wink. Things were urgent, but the reprieve after the shock of the demons was indeed welcome. Possessed knights, foxboys, demons, and Restocasians...? Gods, what comes next... A minute to rest, and nothing more was what they were going to get, but Helena could not even believe that Kat had inhaled the scent of death and dark decay so easily. "Heh, save some fresh air for the rest of us, Kat."

Over her most trusted ally's shoulder, Helena could see Stry approaching. She tensed up again visibly, but decided to at least hear him out this time before letting him get under her skin. He let out a bored sigh, from what Helena could tell. His contributions were... minimal, but he had still laid a finishing blow on the most menacing of the enemies, and for that, he had at the very least earned the slightest ounce of the huntress's respect for himself. Whether he keeps that share, however, is in his court. She removed her quiver from her back, and pretended toy with her arrows. Maybe if she didn't look at him, he wouldn't come anywhere near her...

Her plan failed. Stry came up with a demeanour of cool and collected confidence, entering the conversation between the two archers. Better than 'is smug, shitfaced grin... she thought, deep inside of herself, restraining the words from escaping on her tongue. She removed the glyph-infused bolt from the edge of her quiver as he posed a question seemingly directed at her, responding to her earlier repetition of the mysterious Masquerade's words. "Dunno. Masquerade the Baker... one of the gents who sent us on this mission, seemed to think a Restocasian was behind the whole corrupting-the-king thing." She shrugged, as though the explanation would put the foxboy's questions to rest. It was certainly bluntly put, leaving no real room for a shadow of doubt.

She then turned to her pack, noting for the first time that - inconspicuously - the strange crystal ball that Nanila had once held appeared in her belt. She felt a pang of guilt bite into her gut. The hell's this doing here? It swirled inside, tantalizingly. Helena felt that she definitely didn't have the skill to read it like the prophet once had, but she was comforted (oddly enough) by having it on her person. Maybe it would help her out somehow... The huntress stuffed it into her vest, hiding it away and out of sight from whoever had looted it from the woman. They would certainly be aware of its presence already, but there was no need to also alert the rest of the group to its existence. Especially so as to not make her look like some graverobbing cull.

  18. "A... baker?" Stry asked as if for confirmation, his tone a mix between amusement and confusion. He tilted his head slightly, his steel-gray eyes holding the same curiosity, but now a glint of what could only be described as exhiliration as Helena continued. "Corruption of the king... heh." He chuckled, but it seemed to be at his own thoughts. Looking around, the Kitsune considered. The sphere at the tip of his central tail bobbed in the air slightly as the fan of fur adjusted when Stry shifted position.

"Looks like this foxboy's stumbled into something larger..." Stry muttered, but it was impossible to tell if he was speaking to Helena or himself. But when he looked back at the huntress, the usual calm amusement back in his eyes, it was clear his next words were at the woman. "So, are you ladies planning to ditch me after you're done here? Because I find myself wanting to tag along as long as possible."

  19. A sigh, "Demons, be purged from whence you do not belong."

It was merely a ritualistic phrase she had learned, along with a proper procedure. Hikari gathered an unremarkable amount of Light Mana particles in her finger, and proceeded to perform alternating strokes--three horizontal, three vertical--in the air in front of her as she said this, forming a dim sign which glowed for a couple of seconds, then vanished without trace. It supposedly ensured no other lesser demonic creatures would enter that area for a prolonged period of time, but she had no clue if it actually worked or not. Her personal experience with hellspawn was rather limited to brief encounters and whatnot.

Hikari leant back on the wall, not bothering to put away her weapon because they might as well be arriving to the source of the disturbances within the castle... and it was very probable they would need to fight something. She--they, in fact, probably did not even know what they might be up against the moment they crossed the door... The world flashed in her eyes. Hikari blinked. Before she could process what exactly had happened, ethereal space projected, transitioned, superimposed itself with her vision, causing Hikari to momentarily grip her head and close her eyes tight. She was not met with the fabricated darkness her eyelids projected, but instead with a limitless expanse of glimmering, fixated points which varied in intensity and color. R-right NOW?

The conversation in the other side of reality was ephemeral to her as the perspective appeared to forever shift, gravitate towards uncertain destinations, phantom stars forming groups, patterns, constellations... Then she reached the aster. The astronomical sphere blazed with imaginary, yet overwhelming radiance, blasting arcs of the most exceeding light which curved back into its source like titanic serpents. She reached out... Fingertips grazed the nonexistent composition of the star.

Hikari opened her eyes, suppressing a gasp into an audible cough, but she had to shield her eyes with her other hand, inexplicably. Her eyes adjusted... and she blinked again, disconcerted. Arm outstretched as if to grasp something, a circle of shining markings so finely drawn that they appeared to be crafted into empty space was in place of the illusionary sun, not as extensive, but somehow retaining the same aura of ominousness. Hikari raised an eyebrow, bringing the composite magic glyph close to her. She did not know what it meant, hypnotized by the strange markings around the practically two-dimensional circle.

But, paradoxically, she did. It has got to be the first time I've ever reached it... she recalled the last time she had a "sighting" as she studied the magical representation... it had to be at least months. It was strangely familiar, even though she had seen nothing like this before. But what does it even mean? Careful to not draw too much attention, she tensed her fingers, allowing for the magic holding the together the glyph to disperse. But instead of doing that, it flew as a collected essence, fazing straight through her chest.

The fuck? Hikari instinctively reached to touch the affected area, but there was no damage, no residual Mana, nothing. In fact, she felt completely normal. What the...!? She was fairly positive she had indeed done or achieved something... but she was not sure what exactly this entailed. Hikari shook her head quickly, as if snapping from a brief trance. She would figure out in due time... but for now, it was her duty to find out what exactly was going on in regards to the castle, the king, the country.

The Lumiere Skillblade took a deep breath,

    "Shall we move on?"

  20. "My skill is no greater than yours at this point, to be sure," Kat replied modestly, though she didn't appear embarrassed or really fazed at all by the statement. She just kept her cool, not wanting to get flustered like some school girl. However, her eyes hardened slightly at the talk of a Restocasian being behind the happenings with the king. It bode ill to her, for both she and her missing friend were Restocasians. She figured it was probably best just to appreciate the fact that they trusted her at all knowing that fact, granted they didn't seem entirely sure themselves about what they were hunting down. Kat sadly couldn't even fathom a guess either, for she had not been there for the earlier escapades of this motley group. There was mention of some common baker who had knowledge of magic and theories behind the king's corruption that were probably more well-founded than the mundane theories of the townsfolk. I wouldn't mind meeting this fellow myself once, she mused to herself mentally, turning her attention to Stry who was now speaking up once again, talking about wanting to stick around. "If I'm not mistaken, the truth is soon to be revealed. Is that not why the Lady Alexandra is so anxious to press forward? I don't think this group will be sticking together after the problem is solved," she replied. The others seemed ready to move on, and Alexandra was sure to be growing impatient. Their time for a small rest was up.

"All right, everyone. Let's go!" the noble-turned-blue mage spoke up loudly enough for everyone to hear, and as such, the group was forced to pursue before the brazen and frantic young woman pressed forward on her own. Alexandra opened the door for everyone and they found themselves in the undercroft. It was a smaller room with dusty wooden crates lining the walls draped in torn white linens. A couple of decrepit statues had been stored there as well, but asides from the norm, Alexandra realized there was something...wrong. Someone had been messing around down here. There was a large cage on one wall that was unlocked and empty. A work table had been set up on the opposite wall covered in materials and bubbling potions along with equipment needed to do alchemy. Next to the table was a large, wicker container that seemed clean which meant it must have been put into use recently. Alexandra was perturbed to find all this stuff down there, and upon gazing at the floor, she realized there was a glyph placed upon the stone, inscribed by black paint it seemed. Passing over it and heading to the door on the other side of the room, she tried the handle only to find that the door was locked. There had to be a key around there somewhere.

Kat had entered the undercroft apprehensively, and the first thing she noticed was the glyph. There were letters from the ancient language composing it. "Those letters...only a Restocasian spellcaster would use those in a magic circle like that," Kat pointed out reluctantly, almost as if affirming her own demise. Still, it was something that the others needed to know. They would have to be prepared in the case a Restocasian really was waiting for them on the other side of the door.

"I...I don't care. The storage room is right beyond this door, but it's locked. Everyone search for a key," Alexandra commanded, starting to rifle through some nearby crates. Her tone was much more authoritative than it had been before--the tone of a natural-born leader.
