Streets of Melsborough

I decline the food even though it looks more appetizing than the jerky I had just purchased. "Thank you but no. I never eat food from people I don't know all that well." I keep a wary eye on the crown and look towards Jeremy. "To answer your question I am just passing through, its just one more stop during my travels. I am what you would call a wanderer, I am an unwanted in the eyes of my people because of my spectacular looks." I give a throaty laugh and feel almost good at having people to talk to. I offer some jerky to my new acquaintences hoping they won't eat it all.

You walk over to the Group, a corpulent black-bear, a slender fox, and a toned deer sit on a curb next to the cheetah who had originally caught your eye, the fox was in the middle of a conversation you didn't quite catch and he looks up at you. "Uh.. hey there mate, could I offer you a seat, maybe a beer?" he scoots over closer to the deer a bit, giving you just enough room to sit on the curb. "How 'bout a seat you look exausted, go ahead mate." as he talks you recognise his thick australian accent immediately.

The fox extends a paw. "Names Jeremy, pleased to make yer aquaintance!" he grins looks at his watch, then takes a brief look at the deer, who pauses from his beer and gives a curious look back at the fox. "What... what is it, what are you thinking?" The fox looks from Thaddeus to the deer. "Well its just... y'know if you wouldn't mind, I don't know if this bloke's got a place to stay, by the looks of it he's pretty zonked out mate, y'think we could let 'em crash for the night too?" The deer looks at Mystra, and then at Thaddeus with a look of uncertainty. "Well, I..... Yeah, yeah sure I guess he can stay the night, we should have some room left." he looks at Thaddeus. "Yeah man, by all means, go ahead, you're welcome to crash with us if you like."

The Bear looks at the sky, then at his watch. "Guys, not to bum anybody out, but it's like, 1: 30, I'm thinkin we should pack up before it gets too late, y'know just to at least get some sleep." the Deer looks at the bear with a smirk. "Alright, but that means your driving, I'm like 4 beers, and Jeremy's got like 3 down, so we aren't driving."

  3. RE: Melsbrough Streets

"Well its nice to meet you guys" Thaddeus says while he grips his throat a bit realizing that it is still bleeding from the little encounter he had roughly half an hour ago. "It is also quite nice of you to offer a place to stay... I will do my best to not be a burden to you guys!" Thaddeus says. "Now if it would not be too much to ask, you would not happen to have any bandages would you?"

  4. RE: Melsbrough Streets

"What happened to your face old man? You piss the wrong person off?" I look at the imp like pug and wonder who the hell he pissed off. I realize it must just be him because I haven't even talked to him yet and I am already irritated. I hate weak and simple creatures unless they are children. My stomach curls just thinking of spending any time near Thaddeus. One night is all I need then I can make my way again. Maybe even a few hours, I will sneak out early and disappear before anyone knows I have left.

  5. RE: Melsbrough Streets

The deer looks at Thaddeus. "Holy shit man, what the fuck happened?! Uh... no we don't have any bandages with us, but we've probably got something back at the house.." he looks at the fox who immediately nods. "Y-yeah, we've probably got somethin' mate, you just hold tight there, and we'll drive ya in, and fix you up, sound fair?.. Alrighty then..."

The Group packs up and heads to the south side of the parking lot. eventually the bear points to a small brown van. The pained was chipped and many dings and scratches clearly state that the van had seen better days. The bear unlocks the door and pulls up the front seat, giving you room to sit in the back with the deer, as the fox was already making his way around to the passenger's side.

The deer comes around to the side door, where you are standing after throwing the last of the beer and snacks in the trunk. "Ladies first." he says as he looks to Mystra grinning. The bear seats himself in the front, and you can see the van visibly shake, you can gather your at least a few inches closer to the ground now.

The fox adjusts the mirror, and looks through it to the back. "Alright, we got everybody? Good, should take just a tick to get to Our place, just a few blocks from here, then we can all get some shut-eye, and be ready for tommorow!.... You do know what that is don'tcha?" You can see the bear roll his eyes through the mirror. "You can't be serious Jeremy, the Melsborough fair isn't even really an attraction anymore, all it is, is a scam to get people to go to Kajael's --" the bear is interupped by a loud bang. As you turn your head to face the noise, you see that it had come from a paper bag the deer had popped to intentionally cut off conversation.

The deer looks around for a bit, seeming pleased with the sudden silence. "Alright, thats enough about that.... let's just get going ok?" the other two nod, and the van is started...

  6. RE: Melsbrough Streets

"About what happened, lets just say your not the first people I met coming here to Melsbrough. The first people I met were a scraggly coyote, and a large cougar, who took my money and pretty near killed me." Thaddeus holds a little more pressure to his throat to try and slow the bleeding. "Any ways, thank you for the place to stay. So how did this town get so horrible? It looks like it used to be a great place to live, but now it is a bit down..."

  7. RE: Melsbrough Streets

    (Cid/HChief)

The fox looks through the mirror at the deer, obviously seeing if it was OK to speak, the deer nods in confirmation, and the fox begins: "Well, that started about 10 years back, when a new mayor was appointed to run Melsborough. Back in those days, it was pretty nice here, and we had tourist comin' in from all directions. I was just a pup then, but I can remember the mayor doin' a grand speech, sayin' he was gonna turn the town upside down, and make it overflowin' with people, his idea was to make it like a Vegas strip, Casinos, bars, and all the right fixin's for the tired workin' man." he pauses for a moment to light a ciggarette, and rolls down the window. "After a few months his plan really came into action, he had all the previous up and runnin' we had lights and signs everywhere! But.... soon the town's economy crashed because of all the recent building, and even the profits from the bars and casinos couldn't keep up, and then thats when... the breakdown happened" he looks through the mirror, his face forlorn. "Well, Melsborough just got worse and worse, and eventually became what you see today, I dunno' what happened to tha moyor, he just dissapeared some 3 years back, some claim it was suicide, others just say he packed up like the rest of em'...." he takes a breath. "There then mate... thats the cities sad sob story... satisfied?"

The van keeps rolling, you can assume its only about 5 minutes before you reach your destination.

  8. RE: Melsbrough Streets

And who then is kajael?" You seem wary to mention him, but it has slipped enough that you have made me curious. Whether or not it was intentional you have sparked my interest. I am always intrigued by men with money." I watch the faces of the trio to see the reaction knowing that the deer would be the first to slip up. He was always too fast with his shushing. I look over towards the bloody pug and wish there was a box I could shove him in. "Thaddeus please keep your blood to yourself if you get it on my fur I will have to finish the job the coyote started."

  9. RE: Melsbrough Streets

You look at each persons face, The bear either didn't hear you, or was too busy paying attention to the road to bother saying anything, the fox had an expression of confusion, mixed with fear and uncertainty. The deer was staring the fox down with a look of determination, his eyes quickly turn to you. "Now look here, He's not somebody you just "talk" about, alright? don't get yourself involved in that shit... you'll live longer.." after that the deer seemed to relax and the fox lost interest in the conversation.

The fox, obviously not content with the silence, turns the radio on. you hear the voice of a news announcer, from his voice you can gather he's a human, possibly african-american. "Well folks, I don't know how it happened, but the Melsborough killer, Derek Shoals has ben bailed from prison, not only was he arrested for the murder of his wife, but several other assualts and rape attempts, the following week.. prison officials say they recieved a large sum of cash and a letter explaining that Derek be released at once! Now I don't know about the rest of Y'all in Melsborough, but It feels like the streets got a whole lot mre dangerous. We'll have more on that story in a bit, but now something to calm your nerves." the man on the radio stops his speech, and the rythm of classical jazz now fills the van.

Eventually you turn up a dirt road that seemed hidden in the trees, autumn leaves and the smell of fresh air revitalized your senses, you pass by 2 houses, one a run down, 2 story house that had a tire-swing in the front yard, and the other was a small 1 story house, with a large satillite dish mounted in the roof.

  10. RE: Melsbrough Streets

"Well... atleast this neighbor hood seems a bit more friendly then the last one... Thaddeus says, as the bleeding seems to calm down a bit, however he is concerned as to wether this is from blood loss, or from it stablizing. He would prefer it be the second one, as he has a fairly small body. Thaddeus feels in his pocket to feel the candy bar he had purchased earlier was still there, and was squished at that. "Here" Thaddeus says to them, pulling the candy bar out of his pocket. "It may not be much, but you guys are taking me in in these hard times, so here is some payment for now..." Thaddeus says, offering them the candy bar.

  11. RE: Melsbrough Streets

    (Cid/HChief)
The fox looks up through the mirror at Thaddeus. "Naw, that's alright mate, we don't need that, were just happy to help a friend that's all, besides we got plenty of food left anyway.. you'll see when you get there I suppose." The van makes a sharp left turn, and you pull into a driveway to a large wood house. The house was 2 stories, and was more that a little weathered, The paint, which at one point you presumed to be red, was chipped and flaking off every time a gust of wind hit the sides of the house. it had a small steel chimney, and windows that were caked with dust.

The van rolls to a stop, and you hear the engine shut down. The bear looks through the mirror. "Well here we are. " he yawns, and takes a glance at the clock, it reads 1:47 am. and by the looks of the night sky the clock was right on base.

  12. RE: Melsbrough Streets

As I rode into town late on a cold autumn night on my bike with the wind in my face and my music blaring in the background, I look at the road in front of me and down at the clock -- 12:04. I went to take out a honey-roasted peanut and enjoy it, only to learn that I'm down to the last one. "Jesus fucking--" I said, grunting annoyedly as I clue in. Up ahead, on the left side of the main street is a convenience store. As I process this, I decide to pull up -- making sure to turn off my music -- and buy another packet of peanuts.

  13. RE: Melsbrough Streets

"Is the outside a disguise? Hiding all the luxuriousness a princess like me deserves." I wink at the Jeremy. "Well boys who gets first watch."

  14. RE: Melsbrough Streets

    (Dex Zabeth)

You walk into the convenience store. Behind the counter is a skinny human man, he wears a blue plad shirt and denim pants. The store is old and weathered even from the inside. Many of the shelves have small layers of dust coating them, and are close to being bare. Only a few bags of chips and a few candy bars litter the old shelves. There is a soda machine at the other side of the store, opposite from your current position. The lights in the ceiling are blown and the soda machine flickers, making it seem as it could go out at any moment.

The man looks at you as you enter. "Lordy! whats with all the newcomers... Either Melsborough's disgusting state is now so bad it's become a tourist attraction, or you've just got no life boy.. Cause anybody coming to Melsborough either lost all they had... Or are about to." The man lifts a bag of chips from under the counter, clearly he had taken them recently, and was steadily eating them. "So, what kid... you gonna buy something? if not get out... ain't much more to see here, besides, store's closing in fifteen..."

As you look back, Jeremy's face is in a state of surprise. It was evident that your remark caught him off-guard, and he began to stammer. "Uh... I... I... Yeah! Yeah, I guess I could take first watch... uh, not sure what for, I mean ain't nobody dangerous round' these parts mind you so uh... I pretty sure you'll be safe... but if it makes you feel better I guess I could keep a lookout.." He looks at his feet as he speaks and rubs the backside of his head in embarassment.

The fox is quickly snapped out of his emotions when the deer roughly pushes past him, almost knocking him down. The bear puts a hand on the fox's shoulder to prevent him from falling. The deer quickly looks back at you and Jeremy. "C'mon, I wan't to get some sleep, so lets just head inside and avoid any more interruptions OK? And I don't want to hear anybody talking about Kajael." he gives a sly smirk to Jeremy before turning around. "Especially you.."

  16. RE: Melsbrough Streets

Thaddeus, having listened in on the conversation was a bit curious about Kajael, although was not going to ask who he was. The bleeding finally came down to a small trickle, and Thaddeus released a bit of pressure from it to let his skin breath a bit. He opens up the candy bar, not having had anything to eat for atleast a good 24 hours, and takes a hungry bite from it. "Haha, well this place is a bit like a mansion compared to were I have lived the majority of my life. Perhaps I will have the first good sleep I have had in a Loooonng time..." Thaddeus says while he twidles his thumbs around and fidgets a bit.

The bear goes over to the door, and slides a key into the slot, after a couple lengthy attempts he eventually succeeds at unlocking the door. The wooden door opens with a long whine, and even from the outside you can see that the interior of the building was much the same as the outside. Peeling paint, loose nails, and having an aged and weathered look. You can also see a medium sized table, it is decorated with small brass candlesticks that have been long sice used. As the wind picks up you detect a sour odor being wafted from the house.

The deer walks ahead and quickly enters the house, the bear continues to hold open the door for the remaining members. The fox looks at the two of you. "Well, In we go I suppose, unless you've got anything else to say before we get all snug.."

  18. RE: Melsbrough Streets

"Ill be fine, I expected to be asleep about an hour ago before the run in with that coyote and cougar..." Could you show me were I will be able to catch a few Z's before the sun rises? Thaddeus says, as his mood seems to shift and he becomes a bit more laid back.

  19. RE: Melsborough Streets

    (Cid)

The Fox laughs. "Ha, catch a few Z's he says... I remember when that was cool..." he sighs, and then looks back to you. "Right, then!" The fox leads you into the house, assuming the cheetah would follow. he leads you around the house, clicking on lights as he goes. Like most of the lights in Melsborough they sparked and seemed like they could go out at any moment.

The interior of the house was laid out like this: The door on first enter lead to a dining room, as described before, on the wall to the southwest of the dining room wall, was a bathroom. The bathroom consisted of a toilet, a small rusted sink, and a corner shower that smelled of chlorine. Left from the dining room led to a small room. The room was lined with a shaggy brown carpet. long tears and stains told its history, as well as the red curtains that struggled to line the windows on the east side of the room. on the west side of the room laid a orange couch, it was also in the same condition as every other fabric-based material.

If you went right from the dining room it led to a small stairwell that was extremely steep, and only about 2.5' wide. upstairs was 2 bedrooms each only containing one bed each, one of which was more of a futon. it was eveident that this house didn't have a washing or drying machine, as the smell of the fabrics was a strong musk.

Lastly the fox leads you down a ladder to "The cellar." more importantly however was that this "cellar" was where you were told you'd be sleeping. The cellar itself had concrete flooring, cracked and in some places caked with moss. The cellar smelled of mildew and dust, and the only places you could see to sleep were an old hammock, and a small cot, each were laid acrossthe floor, still waiting to be set up.

The fox turns to you again and examines you. "Well mate, looks like the bleedin's stopped, so uh.. guess I can let you get some shuteye. I'll just let you and Mystra figure out where you'll be sleepin'..." He turns to leave, but after a few paces he stops in place. "Crikey! can't believe I almost forgot!" He rummages around in his pockets for a bit before pulling out a crumpled piece of paper and hands it to you. "Here you are mate, 2 passes to the Melsborough fair! The other one is wedged in ther somewhere I'd wager." He smiles before continuing. "You know... as long as you'd like to go, and uh maybe you could run it past Mystra for me, none of my other friends really wanna go, but I'm thinkin' it'll be a blast.. You know, roller coasters, bumber cars... Pretzels!" he chuckles. "Alright, well I'd better let you catch some sleep, it was nice meeting you.

  20. RE: Melsborough Streets

Thaddeus looks down at the tickets handed to him. He has never really been to any place like a fair before. Having grown up on the streets, he never really did anything that most people would have done atleast once in there lives. Thaddeus walks up to the Hammock, and lays down in it carefully, as he fears if its like the rest of this house, it is probably falling apart as he speaks. He should be grateful that he even found someone as nice as these people in the first place, but he still had a few questions he still wanted answered for himself. Why exactly were they being so nice to him, and who was this Kajael person he had heard about no longer then 20 minutes ago. He then closes his eyes, and has one of the nicer sleeps he has had in up to 10 years.
