[Statplay | Original] Somnambulance

Discussion in 'Interest Checks' started by CerberusLycan, Sep 12, 2012.

  1. The act of sleep-walking.

As the bustling, mundane town of Peraconchus approaches the beginning of winter, several citizens find themselves having odd recurring dreams of a shady figure in a trench coat walking through their lives; and a needle dipping into a lake, suddenly freezing everything; and a horrible monster that descends from the sky to claim it's victims.

These same citizens go to sleep one night and arrive in a glen composed of crystals. In this forebodingly vivid dream the shaded figure wearing a trench coat is standing in the middle of the glen. The figure explains to the dreamers they have been drafted into a new initiative whose mission is to push humanity towards evolution-- what kind isn't specified. In any case, no dreamer is able to freely refuse to participate. Every day, something precious will be taken from them, and every night, they will have the opportunity to recover it. By plunging into the newfound world of concentrated dreams, every dreamer has the chance to retrieve what has been lost; every dreamer will have the chance to broaden their horizons; and every dreamer will be able to become a better dreamer.

It is advised, however, that you work quickly in this hazardous world of dreams (and nightmares)! For when the Creeper completes his web in the sky, he will descend and take every dreamer to where even the best hopes die. And so also dies whatever chance any dreamer had at recovering what all they did lose. In pace requiescat.

    -----More Information---------------------

You will roleplay one of these dreamers-- who every night are forced into an odyssey of a dream to retrieve something precious (what exactly that is, hopefully you will be able to decide, mostly, since they are your characters. Prompts will be given for the first few nights-- "something precious" is so ambiguous, after all). The main flow would be: Base, where you recieve a clue to find your objective, and maybe team up with other dreamers if you want. Specified Dream Land, where, obviously, most of the action takes place. Battles are planned to be held in that typical grid I see in all statplays right now. Reality, where you... live. This could easily be optional, as [at first] it would primarily be roleplaying. Further into the story, though, a few battles may seep into the real world... hee hee.

Attacks are found in "Dream Skill Trees", all of which are based on elements; "Dream of Lightning", "Dream of Inferno", "Dream of Heaven", "Dream of Dragon" etc. You can acquire these abilities by defeating enemies or triggering actions in the landscape, all in the goal to obtain more REMs (Rapid Eye Movements) with which you can unlock abilities in each specific Dream Skill Tree. The further you progress in each Dream Skill Tree, the more abilities are unveiled.

I would love to see if people are interested in this so I could feel better about focusing on expanding on it. Of course, as people join, I plan on-- and am eager to-- grow the plot around each specific character. Oh, and thanks for your time-- or some other such annoying, polite afterword I feel oddly obligated to slip in. Want to hear more or want more detail, just ask. And that's sincere.

  2. Interested? Why yes, yes I am. I absolutely love the concept of dreams in and of themselves, so that really revs me up to join in on this! The only thing is that I'm starting to get overwhelmed with RPs and irl things, but I will certainly do my best to make some time for something as kickass as this!

A question though, what sort of 'statplay' are we talking here? As in, will this be done in the vein of Masquerade/Shadow's styles, or will it be handled entirely differently?

Kudos to you for making this - I'm most definitely interested!

  3. oh god thank you eebit

I plan to use the same kind of grid Shadow and Masq use for battles, thus the battle mechanics will be much the same also. However, I do hope to have "Personality Points" along with the basic Character Statistics (attack, defense, speed, etc.), for added likelihoods and basically percentages and that kind of thing (e.g. if your character is higher in aggression, they are more likely to auto-counter-- or if they are attentive, they gain less REMs, but they have higher critical hit chance and gain mastery in abilities more quickly). Though the whole 'personality points' thing could easily not flesh out well and be junked. I'll be looking to all the current statplays for a more solid idea on mechanics, but I do hope I can add something in to accentuate the 'dream' factor just like KH: 3D added flowmotion!.

  4. I'd be willing to give it a shot since it does seem quite interesting. Dreams fascinate me about as much as Eebit. I even have my own dream-based roleplay going right now. You can count me in. I do expect more explanations about the things you have mentioned and things you may be holding back for the moment. :>

  5. I think I am going to simply go ahead and state my interest here, as I'm particularly intrigued in what direction you'll be taking this. Although the mechanics seem a little too different, I still believe something innovative can sprout from that, provided you explain how new concepts are going to work, of course. So basically, yes, count me in~

  6. I may join, though it depends on how busy I happen to be, not that ADF/tOO/KeM are really going anywhere right now...

  7. Wow; four people. Both more than I hoped for, and also I find myself feeling a higher quality being expected of me since all of you have already been in--probably several-- statplays. My god I hope this works out.

Alright. Since it's the beginning of a weekend, and there seems sufficient amount of interest, I'm going to go ahead and post the SU. I assure you, I'll include more detail about the mechanics there, and I implore you to keep in mind that this is the first roleplay I've ever facilitated, so if something seems too unmanageable or like it probably wouldn't work, please point it out to me. Other than all that, I hope this ends up going well, and I do look forward to seeing your characters. Thanks for the interest! And shoot me right now if I sound too formal!

  8. Well, you roped in the god of statistical role plays, two very distinguished members of the GM community, and one of the best role players I have come to know. XD You're going to have your hands full, but we can also provide you with plenty of advice, so try not to feel too nervous~

  9. Just updating this, 'cause obviously I haven't gotten Somnambulance's OOC/ SU up yet. I was typing it up when I realized I have almost no predetermined clue about the calculations and formulas. They're coming along swimmingly, though, don't worry. What I have left to do now, pretty much, is smooth them out with several test drives; thus, plan on the SU coming in, maximum, four weeks. Goddam it Shadow, it would be three weeks, but you just had to introduce me to Touhou. But, primarily, just want to assure people that I haven't forgotten about this RP at all.

And thanks Masq. It's actually amusing now to think I'll be entertaining such practiced RPers.

  10. I'm interested.

  11. Oh, excellent. Nice to see you here, Naru~

While I'm here, another update: I swear I never forget about this for even a day. But I will need more time to get into the test drives-- homework is so much more severe this semester than I would have imagined, and my laptop is acting fritzy often. And just plain lack of motivation. But I mean, every time I visit this thread, and see the work I put into it, and how many people are interested, it inspires me to sing work on the test drives. So, in effect I should probably make this thread my homepage.

But yeah. This thing is still happening, or damn my soul to disgusting, boring heaven right now.
