Rose Screams About Indie Music

Discussion in 'Miscellaneous Conjectures' started by Rose, Apr 11, 2016.

  1. I need to get my Cymbal game on more often, and probably drag Britt back to ZEJ again while I'm at it so these posts I'll be making in her threads will actually be relevant. :5

Whitney did appear on my radar and, not unlike yourself, I'm in love with the album. While I didn't get to review it, our editor did give it to all of us as a random gift as she likes to randomly do sometimes. Rose actually got to see Whitney perform live in the basement of a church, which I'm infinitely jealous of despite venue weirdness, and which I'm sure she'll tell you all more about once I do the aforementioned dragging-back thing.

Outside of that, I'd label Sam Beam & Jesca Hoop's release as much more in the avenue of the indie folk scene than anything to do with country. Whoever promoted it as such is a silly being. Sam is the face of Iron & Wine, too, so it isn't too surprising to see you relate his work with Jesca to his main outlet for music. I love me some Iron & Wine, and really did enjoy this album a fair bit. Their act was one of the events that I sadly missed when they came rolling into the city this year. Hopefully they do something again together soon, but I would also jump into both of the solo shows rather immediately so it isn't a huge loss, at least - so long as they roll back around to my parts soon, nevertheless!

  2. Poses! Jonno is correct about a lot of things. I am here. I am talking. I have been in hell for two weeks but I am here.

    Good music:
    • Personally really liked Bon Iver's new record, but there was discourse in the music department about it (mainly from Austin...). By the way @Jonno Austin was pissed you got the physical of the record before we did.
    • There's a new band called the Lemon Twigs where if you liked the Sgt Pepper album you'll like that too.
    • Angel Olsen. 'Nuff said.
    • I forced the new Sleigh Bells into rotation even though I kinda thought it was okay and it was mainly out of spite from Chaos(TM). More on Chaos(TM) later.
    • STRFKR. What a good dance pop album. It's so good. omg.
    • Kan Wakan's Molasses EP. The full EP is good and I dunno where you can find it because I sure as hell can't, but there's a great song at the very end.
    • Hyyyyyype for new Sylvan Esso album in 2017. Gimme gimme.
    • The Last Shadow Puppets new EP due out in December looks greeeeeaaaaat.
    • The single from the Dirty Projectors is really good too.... hope I get a new record out of it.
    • Most of the stuff I share on Cymbal is good but old. Fiona Apple, Radiohead, and Modest Mouse have been popping up the most in my playlist recently.
    Other shit:

Uhhh... Chaos(TM) has put me behind. I need to pick up the pieces and I'm probably not going to have it all picked up until we get back from winter break. Thank goodness CMJ charting (who popped up with a random 6 month subscription a few weeks ago) ends on November 29, and Medium Rotation charts end two weeks later, but everyone gives a fuck about CMJ. Ugh. I'm not a fan of the chaos, but I have time to reinstitute order I think. Soon. Working on it.

  3. I made a 2016 best albums playlist! Here!

2017 is quiet because I'm not back at school yet, but I found out Michael Cera has a record out called "True That" and if you think I didn't immediately download the first free 320 bit rate MP3 I had of it, you are WRONG. Programmed the fuck out of it.

Parekh and Singh was a good record I listened to last week, and I liked the new xx record. Weirdly, the Starbucks I was at decided to play it cover to cover while I was reviewing it. It made listening to it very confusing. I also listened to the new record from a Philly band called Brandon Can't Dance. Nice punk influences that are pretty cool and were well executed. Good record of last week.

In Disappointmentland, we have The Flaming Lips. It was weird, sloppy, and Miley Cyrus should be nowhere near college radio. My advisor tried to program it. I vetoed.

I'm excited for Dirty Projectors and Lorde this year!!!! And Sylvan Esso!!!! I'm ready!!! 2017 can bring it on!

  4. I'm not even going to give the Flaming Lips' latest the time of day for the foreseeable future, to be honest. You are far from the only one I've known to lambaste it, and that includes critics who've gotten their scores aggregated to give it a pretty middling review projection for what is usually such a well-received band. I feel like Miley is kind-of a relic of a foregone era after exacerbating her appeal after following up all of the controversy of "We Can't Stop" with a pretty meh pop album, too. Weird choice for a collaboration all-around.

I haven't been on-the-loop with Parekh and Singh, so I have you to thank for happening upon one of my new favorite listens with Ocean! Neat.

  5. CMJ finally fucking died, but I guess there's still nothing really of extreme note right now. If you like records about suave old men seducing foreign women you might like the new Mick Harvey? Riot grrrl, then The Regrettes? Surfer Blood is pretty good? Other than that everything's still kinda lame. I did get the new Ryan Adams and Jesca Hoop @Jonno so I'll let you know how those go.

  6. Yo, @Rose I am so down with the new Jesca Hoop record. Got it over a month ago so we could launch a review with it for PopMatters and really dig it. I'm interested in hearing what you think about it - she is decidedly a much more eclectic and offbeat songwriter when left to purely her own devices.

  7. Ooooo this will be exciting shit then. I can't wait. It'll be a better week than last week I think.

  8. It matches up pretty nicely! It's a gorgeous record, kinda giving me the vibes of Joanna Newsom and Laura Marling. Well done, and I'm definitely going to talk about that review to the promoters since I see Popmatters on the "please add my record it's well reviewed" stickers. :)

  9. In one of the biggest fuckups I've ever seen, I got the Dirty Projectors a week early. Promoter jumped the gun a little but I grabbed the download before they took it down. I'm laughing. But it's really good!!!!

  10. Yoooooo. Once I'm back home for the day, I'm gonna check it out, too! Thanks for the share, haha. Gotta love those gun-jumpers. :5

  11. Who's ready for MORE MOUNTAIN GOATS BECAUSE I SURE AM!!!!!

  12. For once, @Jonno reviewed something that I had a personal connection to! The William Matheny record has been hyped to me for weeks courtesy of a West Virginian music director who worked with him at the Mountain Stage. Nathan's hype about the album led to a sneak preview from Soundcloud, and I'm excited to add it this week when it drops. I love having small world cases like this.

  13. Man, and now I'm just wishing that the particular publicist I'd worked with had actually gotten his state right, LOL. I was explicitly told this was an Ohioan artist, not a West Virginian one. I'll have to get in contact with our head editor soon to get that fixed. I really dug that record though and wish I could've actually done a longer spread on it than the word count I had been allotted. Small world situations are always fun, though, for sure. And yes, I'm hyped for dem goatz.
