Pokémon Sun Version and Moon Version

1. >Bewear.

What is this? Dragon Quest? I love it though.

3. Bewear. Heh. Heheh. Heheheheheh. So bad. Yet so good.

4. I didn't know what my hypothetical team would be before because there weren't too many new Pokemon who caught my eye, but I think as of right now I have enough ones that I genuinely like. I'm excluding starters because none of them specifically call out to me yet. (I usually pick based on evolutions, actually)

Hypothetical team, in their hypothetical "order":
Mimikyu / Bewear / Mudsdale / Cutiefly / Rockruff / Salandit

It would be pretty sick if we get to ride Mudsdale. Also the flavor text for Mudsdale on Serebii is pretty interesting: (emphasis mine)
"Mudsdale is known for its powerful body as well as its emotional fortitude, which keeps it from being agitated by anything. It never cries out, no matter what kind of trouble it’s in, and it defeats its opponents with a single powerful blow. Its legs are coated in protective mud, and the weight of this coating increases the force of its kicks. One kick, and a car is a pile of scrap! Mudsdale’s running speed is not too swift, but it has excellent power and stamina. It can carry on for three days and three nights despite dragging loads of over 10 tons! When Mudsdale gallops in earnest, the power of each hoof-clop can dig out huge holes, even in asphalt. Mudsdale is forbidden to run on some of Alola’s public roads."

6. I'm going to pose forward my predictions of how the so-far released Pokemon will fare competitively. Now of course this isn't saying anything as to how much I like the Pokemon, or what Pokemon you should use, I'm just giving my thoughts on how they'll interact with the metagame.

Rowlet
This honestly depends on whether it stays Grass/Flying or if the Grass/Ground theory ends up being true, but either way it's going to be x4 weak to a very common type in competitive, that being Ice. Now, I'm not really sure that Rowlet is going to break the mold of Grass starters being bulky (only Serperior and Sceptile have broken that so far) but I do think it'll have a little more offensive presence than, say, Venusaur or Meganium. If anything it'll end up like Chesnaught- defensive, but can actually fight back. Most likely focuses on HP, Def, and minor Atk. Not likely to be OU- maybe BL or PU in terms of tier. This is just judging by its appearance- once we see the second stage evolutions of the starters, I'll have a bit more of an idea.

Litten
No idea what type it's going to be (I know it's unlikely but I'm really hoping for Fire/Dark) but I think it's going to be a PU or even OU sweeper, either having mixed potential or being Physical. Like most of the other Fire starters (Emboar excepted) I predict it'll focus in one or both of the Offensive stats and Speed. I can very easily see Litten learning Fake Out and Quick Attack- or even a Fire-type priority move if SM reveals one. Maybe even moves like Sucker Punch. That being said, its defenses will possibly be quite low; either it's going to be an OU sweeper with so much of its BST in offense and speed that it dies quickly (see: Infernape) or it's going to have its BST spread out so much to cover its defenses that it gets knocked down a tier or two.

Popplio
If Rowlet's going to be the bruiser and Litten's going to be the sweeper, that probably leaves Popplio as either the wall or the sweeper that focuses in the stat Litten doesn't, if Litten isn't mixed. I think it's more likely to be the wall, but I do see it being a Special sweeper. Again, no idea as far as type goes- rumor has it that it'll be Fighting, and if that's the case logic would have it probably being the bruiser if Rowlet isn't. Though, we don't see many Special Fighting-types that aren't mixed, do we? A Water/Fighting Special sweeper could potentially be interesting. I see it being in roughly the same tier as Rowlet, give or take one (so anywhere from UU to PU or maybe even OU).

Rockruff
Generic Route 1 Pokemon, probably- the Lillipup of this generation, in other words. It probably won't be terribly strong, suffering from similar effects Linoone does: a decent movepool, but doesn't have the stats to back it up. Its abilities are fairly generic and not really useful competitively, so at best it's going to be UU and at worst it'll be NU. Maybe a good Pokemon ingame- Linoone is good until mid-game and Stoutland is pretty solid in the Elite Four- but not likely to be good in the metagame. Focus on Atk and either Def or HP.

Komala
Doesn't sound much better than Rockruff. Its ability makes it seem like more of another gimmicky Normal-type- perhaps with niche use, since it'll probably have access to Sleep Talk and Snore- but unless it has an evolution I really don't see it having the stats to survive in OU. UU at best. Focus on HP and  maybe the Special stats.

Pikipek
Normally I'd say that the generic bird doesn't have a bright competitive future, but then Talonflame arrived in XY and from what I've heard Staraptor is also somewhat useful. It's... a woodpecker. Likely to focus on Speed and Atk, but unless it has some incredible Hidden Ability like Talonflame's Gale Wings I just don't see it being OU. It could potentially be a monster in UU or whatever tier it's in with that Skill Link, and might even see niche use in OU. When I say niche use, though, I mean in the same way Absol and other UU Pokemon might see use in OU- there's some aspect about them (in Absol's case, its high Attack and Critical Hit abuse) that lets them hold their own in OU, but ultimately the Pokemon lacks the defenses or HP or movepool to really survive.

Yungoos
Probably the Purrloin or Pancham of this generation- an early-game catch with unpredictable levels of use later in the game. Almost definitely has an evolution, and likely focuses on Atk and some other stat as a minor focus. Probably Speed or HP. Honestly, I don't see it as OU, but I can predict that, like Pikipek, it'll be a monster in whatever tier it lands in. Stakeout, when combined with Pursuit, Fake Out, a Normal Gem, and some nice prediction skills, can make it a painful punishment for switching in. The issue is that the opponent probably won't take the risk if Yungoos is already out, so Pursuit might be useless, but if you can accurately predict the opponent's switch, you could switch into this, and then either Fake Out or Quick Attack (or another priority move- QA is easily countered by Ghost, Steel, and Rock types) if you think the opponent will double-switch. Likely UU. Predicted useful moveset: Fake Out, Pursuit, Quick Attack, and some priority move that can deal at least neutral damage to 2/3 of the mentioned counters. (Likely Dark or Ghost)

Grubbin/Charjabug/Vikavolt
Generic bug maybe not so generic. I'll admit that I LOVE Vikavolt- and a Bug/Electric-Type already counters one of Bug's more common weaknesses, Flying. That being said, I'm seeing a frail, fast Special sweeper. Likely to die almost instantly, but packs a punch and can be annoying- possibly this generation's Ninjask. The information we know about Vikavolt even mentions its speed and mobility. It probably won't be OU, but might see niche use like Pikipek, and will likely be PU/NU just like Ninjask. I can easily see this seeing OU use, though, as a Volt Switch lead and either a Focus Sash or a Choice Scarf.

Drampa
Iiiiiii honestly don't know what to make of this. It screams "gimmicky half-Normal type" to me but that Ability can't be ignored. From its abilities alone, it looks like it might see use as a mixed attacker- not a sweeper, maybe, but I think its BST will focus on SpAtk and SpDef with a minor focus in Atk. It doesn't seem incredibly fast, so it might either be a stall or a high-risk-high-reward Special sweeper with a Focus Sash, lowest possible defenses, and a nicely high-powered Special move. Hyper Beam, maybe for STAB, since it won't live for more than one turn. Alternatively, it might have access to Belly Drum- max out its defensive/HP stats, give it a handful of EVs in Atk, and a high-powered Physical Normal- or Dragon-Type move. Dragon Rush, Dragon Claw, maybe even Strength fit the bill. Likely anywhere from UU to BL/PU.

Bruxish
We talked briefly about this in IRC when discussing Talonflame and how easy it is to cheese Gale Wings. I'll say immediately that I don't think Bruxish will be any higher than BL. I feel like it's going to have mediocre stats and a mediocre movepool. That being said? It might see niche use in OU purely as a Talonflame counter. It's Super Effective on Talonflame, has an Ability that makes it all but immune to Gale Wings, and resists the only other attack most Talonflame sets seem to run (Flare Blitz). BUT, I don't think it's getting access to anything that would scare Talonflame away aside from Surf or Scald, and certainly not Pursuit, which means Talonflame can just easily switch out (unless Stealth Rocks are up, but even then Roost exists) until Bruxish is dealt with. Likely going to have a somewhat spread BST, maybe focusing on one of the two offensive stats.

Cutiefly
Uhhhhhh I really have no idea here. Does it evolve? Is it a single-stage basic gimmick? This is probably one of the harder Pokemon to read. Its abilities are either generic or don't affect combat, and it alone looks like it's not going to be remotely a threat. However, that can all change if it turns out to have an evolution- but Cutiefly itself doesn't look like it's going to focus on any one stat.

Togedemaru
Pikaclones are historically mediocre Pokemon competitively. I don't think Togedemaru will be an exception. NU or RU, probably focusing on Def, SpDef, and/or SpAtk. No evolution.

Salandit
If it has a properly-statted evolution, this thing right here has the potential to be an absolute monster. Its cool and unique typing aside, Corrosion as an ability is actually surprisingly revolutionary because it can help take down notorious walls such as Muk and Registeel. I can see Salandit in OU with either a stalling or a sweeping moveset- likely focusing in Speed and one of the two Special stats. It could work great either way- as a stall, give it Toxic, a recovery move, possibly Will-o-Wisp, and some attacking move like Flamethrower. As a sweeper, give it Flamethrower, Sludge Bomb, and whatever moves strike your fancy that suit your build. Its flavor text states that it "is not a very powerful Pokémon, but its cunning nature allows it to battle fiercely by throwing its opponents off balance". Tricky Pokemon like this tend to be status-inducers- and while Salandit itself might not be particularly powerful Pokemon, its potential evolution might be.

Bewear
Gimmicky half-Normal type. Next!

...

Okay but seriously, I don't see it in OU play unless it has an evolution. If it's a single-stage basic, probably UU. Will almost definitely concentrate on Atk, with Def or HP being a minor focus. Gimmicky defensive ability, half-Normal for absolutely no reason, yeah... I do hope it gets an evolution, as it would be interesting to see in the metagame, though.

Mimikyu
We also discussed this faux-Pikaclone in IRC. It will likely have mediocre stats and be solidly in UU, but its ability might just save it- a free turn has incredible potential, especially if it resets on switch. Not sure about stats, but imagine these scenarios:

1. Scout lead, with Choice Band/Specs and good speed. If Mimikyu has access to Volt Switch, U-Turn, or a new move that does the same thing, use it as a scouting lead, take a cheap shot at the enemy, and swap into a Pokemon that can deal with your opponent. Disguise will prevent Mimikyu from taking damage this first turn, and while it doesn't just give you a free switch (unless you Razor Fang/King's Rock it and get lucky) it does preserve Mimikyu for another cheap shot.

2. Scarf lead, with good Speed and a switching move just in case. Guaranteed free hit because of Disguise, and near-guaranteed free hit if you're not fighting Mega Aero/Ninjask/Deoxys-S/etc.

3. Substall, with Leftovers and good defenses and HP. Free Substitute because of Disguise, then a free status or recovery move because of Substitute. Could potentially fall apart if Miikyu is frail, but could last you a few turns.

4. Switch-stall, with good speed. Free status because of disguise, then either switch out or use a switching move to get it out of danger.

Those are only the possibilities I can come up with off the top of my head. It might not even have access to switch moves, but if it does it has a lot of potential.

Wimpod
Cute little trilobite that almost definitely has an evolution. I actually see this thing having good LC use- give it a Focus Sash, let it get a Toxic off, then it immediately switches out when idk your opponent's Abra comes out with a fucking Thunderbolt because LC is ridiculous sometimes. No but really, if its potential evolution keeps this Ability, it could make for a surprisingly efficient lead if given a Focus Sash and enough speed. Too early to tell its stats, but I feel like Speed will be a focus.

Bounsweet
Hawaiian Cherrim with generic abilities and no outstanding features. Next!

Comfey
Not sure what to make of it. Could be a monster in double battles, but I don't see it getting past UU. Maybe with Helping Hand and Heal Pulse? idk.

Mudsdale
Definitely a Physical wall, potentially PU but not OU unless it gains an unlikely evolution. Could also be a high-power Physical bruiser, with high Atk and Def but poor Speed. Pair it with Comfey in a double battle, maybe?

Tapu Koko
Lore-wise? An interesting Pokemon. Game-wise? I don't see it being anything special. It reminds me of Hawlucha, though. Likely Special stats and Speed, could make a very nice lead in an Electric monotype team. Electric Surge, then Volt Switch out to a Pokemon that can make the best use of Electric Terrain.

Solgaleo
Uber. Probably Physical stats. Could either be a counter to or countered by Mega Lucario. Likely offense-oriented, possibly a bulky sweeper.

Lunala
Space bat. Uber. Probably Special stats. Could e an interesting counter to the multitude of Psychic-Types in the Uber metagame, and will very likely be a wall due to its Multiscale-like Ability.

Magearna
Fuck you and fuck Mythical Pokemon I barely understand them in the metagame.

7. I'm not into the competitive scene enough to say whether I agree or disagree with the musings laid out by @Keileon, but also I'd like to add my own thoughts on Cutiefly— not for "competitive" play neccesarily, I can't make very solid points on how anyone would fair in that. Literally just feelings and excitement, I'm not the one to go to for Quality Pokemon Theorizing. I'm basically being a hype-man, I just want to show you why I think Cutiefly's a swell Pokemon.

Cutiefly | アブリー | Aburī

So these little buggers, if you didn't hear yet, are most likely based on bee-flies.
1. Surprisingly relevant to the Grim Fandango quote in my signature.
2. Also there's this screeshot from Tumblr about bee-flies that i would like to share:

"Adorable and insidious!" doesn't seem like a tag-line most people would associate with Cutiefly, Kuda even said that it's appearance doesn't show much of a threat and I would've thought it to just be a cute little guy too.
Not the Pokemon we expected, but the Pokemon we deserve.

Ok so let's start actually talking, yeah?

1. What I Want
I'm not sure how true Nintendo wishes to stay to the actual facts about bee-flies, or even how they might add the fact about parasite eggs, but man. I am even more excited about this now.
Bee-flies, with their fuzzy little appearance, are champions of a simple oft-said idea: "Don't judge a book by it's cover."
This is an insect that surprises us and shocks us, exhibiting an insidious and destructive nature (RIP bee eggs and their food reserves) hiding behind it's fuzzy little body.
If this Pokemon isn't an amazingly savage piece of shit under that disguise I'm crying.
I want this to be the kind of Pokemon people overlook. You see it in an early route, maybe you catch it because it's cute or because of your Pokedex, but nobody really expects to keep it in their team for the long-run.

But surprise.

Those who do raise it come to realize that it has secretly been a #beast the whole time.

Unlikely? Yeah, sure, fine.

Fun to dream about????? Absolutely.

2. Abilities
I'm getting my ability info from Bulbapedia, it may or not be finalized.

The first ability listed is Honey Gather. For those who don't know, this isn't really a useful battle ability. It's main purpose is getting you honey after battles, which is used to attract wild Pokemon. I don't know people who really use this feature in general, and it of course has 0 value in competitive play.

? But ? It's ? Second ? Ability ?

It's second listed ability is Shield Dust. Venomoth has this ability, Wurmple and Dustox (but not Cascoon) can have this ability, the Scatterbug and Vivillion (but not Spewpa) can have this ability, and Caterpie and Weedle can have this ability.

I personally like Shield Dust. It's basically the defensive version of Sheer Force. For those that don't know, Sheer Force is an ability that increases the damage of an attack if it has a secondary effect. For example, if a Pokemon with the ability hypothetically used Body Slam (which has a 30% chance of paralysis), it's damage would be increased in exchange for removing the 30% chance of paralysis. Shield Dust does not affect damage (unfortunately). However, it completely removes the secondary effect. You still get hit, but at least you don't have to worry about status effects, stat changes, and flinching.

(Moves that don't deal damage and only cause effects are not covered, like Thunder Wave.)

3. Typing
I'm using a matchup calculator thing I found on the internet, could be wrong.

Admittedly it is weak to fairly popular types: Fire, Poison, Flying, Rock, and Steel.

However it also has some fairly good resistances/immunities.

It can resist: Grass, Ground, Bug, and Dark.

And it's also apparently immune to Dragon, which like, amazing, I hate fighting Dragon-types or Pokemon with Dragon moves, they make me suffer.

While it's resistances and Dragon immunity don't neccesarily make up for it's weaknesses, those are still pretty good!

4. Evolution???
I don't have a solid guess on whether or not Cutiefly seems like a Pokemon that would evolve. Majority of bug-types evolve and are famous for their relatively fast evolutions, so while I can't guess if it might evolve I'm going to venture a guess that it would presumably evolve fast?

Also saw a post the other day, can't remember where, where someone said it would be cool for a Cutiefly evolution to be one of those Super Fuzzy Cloud-Looking Moths.

5. ??????
???????????/?//??
///?/??////??/¿/?/?
???//¿¿¿//¿¿¿¿///???

6. Profit
[IMG]

And that's it. I told you it wasn't very full of any real substance.

8. The only real use Honey has anymore is shiny hunting via horde battle, fwiw

9. Okay no, that's not how that works. When a Pokemon evolves, unless whatever Ability it has is the same as the Ability in the same slot as the Pokemon it's evolving into, its Ability will change. Because of this, Cascoon, Spewpa, Metapod, Butterfree, Kakuna, and Beedrill will never have Shield Dust legitimately.

That aside, I keep forgetting to bring this up... More info on August 1st! Same time as usual, so mark your calendars!

10. !!!

I didn't know this, thank you! (Fixed)
this is why you shouldn't trust me for serious Pokemon talk

11. This... is going to be an interesting update to make.... I'll just leave you with the trailer as I put everything together...

EDIT: Sorry, watching the Japanese trailer. Give me a few minutes.

------------------------------------------

Alright, normally the first thing I'd go over are the new Pokemon... But I think we should go over what the hell is up with that Exeggutor in the video thumbnail first.

First off, we have Alola Forms, giving classic Pokemon quite the variations.

Exeggutor's is Grass/Dragon with the ability Frisk.

[IMG][IMG]
Vulpix and Ninetails go through quite the type change, being Ice and Ice/Fairy respectively. Both have the ability Snow Cloak.

[IMG][IMG]
Sandshrew and Sandslash also have Alola Forms, both being Ice/Steel with the ability Snow Cloak.

Now for the new Pokemon...

[IMG][IMG][IMG][IMG]
To start off, we have Oricorio. This Pokemon has four different forms, one for each island. Baile Style is Fire/Flying, Pa'u Style is Psychic/Flying, Pom-Pom Style is Electric/Flying, and Sensu Style is Ghost/Flying. It has the new ability Dancer, which allows it to copy dance moves.
Confused? Yeah no, it really just means it can copy moves like Teeter Dance, Petal Dance, Dragon Dance, etc.

[IMG][IMG]
Next, Minior. It is Rock/Flying with the new ability Shields Down. With Shields Down, it has excellent defense and is protected from status conditions. But when its HP drops below 50%, its shell breaks, revealing its core. The core's color varies depending on the color of debris it has absorbed.

We have Yungoos' evolution, Gumshoos. It keeps its ability of either Stake Out or Strong Jaw.

Fomantis is Grass with the ability Leaf Guard. It can learn a new move, Solar Blade.

Lurantis is Fomantis' evolution. It is also Grass with the ability Leaf Guard, and capable of learning Solar Blade.

Finally, we have Mudsdale's pre-evolution Mudbray. It is Ground with either Own Tempo or Stamina for its ability.

With the Poke Ride feature, you are able to call on Pokemon to help you reach places you can't get to on your own. So it's basically expanded Kalos... Except you can also ride a Charizard!

Traditional gyms seem to be absent this gen. Instead, you are destined to take on the island challenge, undergoing various trials on each of the islands. Not limiting to battles, as you'll often find yourself doing other things.
But at the end of each trial, you'll find yourself fighting against Totem Pokemon, Pokemon larger than others of their species and covered in aura. In these battles, they are able to summon allies to aid them.
And the final trial for each island is the grand trail, a battle against the kahuna of that island. Beating them is recognition that you cleared all of the island's trials and allows you to proceed to the next island. And wouldn't you know it? Hala, the guy that gives you your starter Pokemon, is the kahuna of Melemele Island.

And finally, the time has come... the offical revelation of our plot device!
Pokemon Sun and Moon introduce Z-Moves, overwhelmingly power moves. These utilize both the Z-Ring on the trainer's wrist and Z-Crystals found throughout Kalos. In order to use a Z-Move, the Pokemon must learn a move of the same type as a Z-Crystal, the Pokemon must be holding the corresponding Z-Crystal, and it must be the same Z-Crystal set into the Z-Ring. In addition, Z-Moves can only be used once per battle.

And it appears we're getting new info on August 12th. Ths time, at 10:00 JST. Wait, August 12th? But that's the day CoroCoro's getting released this month... Something tells me they didn't think this one through...

12. First few seconds of the trailer:

"Huh, okay... LMAO WHAT THE FUCK"

Edit: Okay I'm getting Ninetales and Sandslash

Edit 2: Oh god cheerleader bird

Edit 3: "Gumshoos"

Final edit: Will do competitive predictions later when it isn't still morning

Actually final edit: WAIT WAIT did Ninetales use a move that just directly froze Salamence? We haven't had a status move for guaranteed Freeze yet.

13. Gumshoos is Trump after four years of presidency.

14. A lot of this is just making me think of well... Pokemon hacks rather than core games.
I mean you've got the non-typical gameplay (sort of, in a way) and what are essentially Delta Pokemon.
Oricorio is pretty cool and I'm excited about Mudbray because, y'know, Mudsdale. I'll admit the Vulpix/Ninetails Alola Forms are actually kind of mildly disappointing for me, but otherwise I don't have a solid opinion on the new forms. (However, Exeggutor's neck is amazing, god bless)

I'm curious to see how the Alola Forms function, though. Will all Pokemon automatically be in their Alola Forms or will they be co-existing with the original forms, perhaps a bit harder to catch?

Not really a fan of Yungoos/Gumshoos, personally, but I like it's slight connection to the last generation through Pancham/Pangoro. Pangoro was clearly based on a sort of delinquent appearance and Gumshoos is obviously the "gumshoe" counterpart to that. Which is pretty neat, I guess.

15. Suddenly Final Fantasy

16. I think if you're gonna want a normal Vulpix/Ninetails/Exeggutor/Sandshrew/Sandslash that you're gonna have to trade them – maybe I'm wrong, but it seems like these are what are native here and having the ability to catch the "normal" ones in addition kinda takes away the fact that these are what the native ones look like and have adapted to become.

17. My turn to post updates I guess.

Serebii recap:

The first images from CoroCoro have leaked and have revealed the latest news on Sun & Moon. As always, do note that translations are preliminary while we work on them. The little sandcastle is called Sunabaa while the big one is called Shirodesuna. Both are Ghost/Ground-type. Pre-evolved Bewear is called Nuikoguma and remains Normal/Fighting-type. and the fish is Yowashi is Water-type and appears to have the ability to change its appearance from its Single Form into a larger fish, its School Form. It also confirms Alolan Meowth & Marowak. Alolan Meowth is Dark-type while Alolan Marowak is Fire/Ghost-type.
We also see the first bits of the antagonist team, Team Skull. Its boss is called Guzma and the girl is Plumeri
Edit @ 07:31: It also confirms that next month's issue will contain a poster featuring Rockruff's "Secret Evolution".
07:47: Alolan Meowth developed after being bred by the royal family of Alola. Alolan Marowak developed in response to its natural predators in order to resist them. We'll bring more as it comes

-----

Loving the Alolan Marowak.

As for everything else, all I have to say is this:

18. But wait! There's more! Another page of CoroCoro surfaced, revealing a new Pokemon, Namakobushi.

There's really no information on this thing, but apparently it's able to spit a fist-shaped organ out of its mouth.

19. It's the Chuck Norris of the Pokémon world.

20. are we sure that's a pokemon, it looks like an in-training digimon
