My Anime Academia (aka the Anime Thread)

Discussion in 'Miscellaneous Conjectures' started by The Kakuzato, Dec 2, 2013.

  1. ~Official ZEJ Anime Thread
Welcome to the thread for discussing anime on ZEJ! There aren't really very many rules here.  Just try to keep spoilers in spoiler tags, and just have a good time!

    @Muddy: MAL
    @"The Kakuzato": MAL

    ~ZEJ's Recommended Anime
    Anime levels:
Beginner: Either you've never watched an anime before, or have watched a couple. You just aren't familiar with anime at all.
Moderate: You've put quite a few anime under your belt.  Maybe you have a MAL to keep track, and are just looking for something to watch.
Advanced: You're well-familiar with anime tropes, and have watched dozens of anime. You can catch a bunch of references to even some lesser-known things.

    Action:
Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann: Mecha/Beginner. Perhaps one of the more famous anime made, TTGL is truly a testosterone-fest.  It makes you feel manly just watching. Sure, a lot of it makes zero sense, but you realize early on that it doesn't need to: the most important things are how the characters grow, how they interact with each other, and of course the sheer absurdity of the power level growth and the nonstop action. ~ @"The Kakuzato"

Cowboy Bebop: Space Opera/Beginner. Cowboy Bebop is an episodic action/comedy/what was this episode even about/drama anime about the adventures of the bounty hunters aboard the spaceship Bebop. It's also one of the highest rated anime ever, and not without reason! It has great characters, a phenomenal soundtrack, great animation and action sequences (The space chases are so good) and every story it tells feels different, you might be watching an episode about some guy accidentally getting everybody high on shrooms, and then a few episodes later, the main character might be fighting a terrorist group with a highly contagious virus that wants to revert humans into primates. All in all, it's an amazing anime that everybody should watch at least once, you'll surely fall in love with most of the characters and end up rewatching your favorite episodes. ~ @Muddy (Also, he says the dub is better.)

    Comedy:
Ore, Twintails ni Narimasu: Parody/Advanced. This show isn't some amazing anime.  In fact, it's pretty much the opposite: the show itself is pretty much shit. But it manages to be inexplicably hilarious.  Perhaps best saved until you're familiar with anime, as it is very strange. Strange enough that even some anime fans feel it's too weird.  Once you're used to that strangeness, however, it's great to just make fun of how stupid everything is. ~ @"The Kakuzato"

Osomatsu-san: Slapstick/Moderate. Written and directed from the same people as Gintama, Osomatsu-san is a wild parody-fest that doesn't let up for a moment.  Well, for the first episode anyway.  After that, it becomes a relatable, down to earth comedy that knows exactly when to take itself seriously, injecting a bit of cynicism into its skits when needed.  It feels like an old 60s cartoon updated to the 21st century.  Then again, that's exactly what it is. ~ @"The Kakuzato"

    Drama:
Puella Magi Madoka Magica: Magical Girl/Moderate. There isn't much I can say about this without giving away large spoilers. But, I will say that it is a different take on the Magical Girl "genre" of anime.  Most people will say "wait until epiode 3," but I'll say that sometimes, episode 3 isn't enough for certain people.  So I'll just say "watch the whole thing, and the third movie" (if you're curious, the first two movies just retell the anime, only, you know, shorter and stuff.  The third movie is the actual continuation.). Best saved until you're somewhat familiar with anime in general, enough to know about tropes common to anime. ~ @"The Kakuzato"

Steins;Gate: Time Travel/Beginner. I'm sure everyone knows that I have a weakness for Time Travel plots, but Steins;Gate is truly a standout even among Time Travel in general.  While it doesn't necessarily do anything unique in its premise, the outstanding characters and their interactions are what make this anime a masterpice.  From the crazy, conspiracy theorist Okabe, to the lazy if brilliant Daru, to the plucky, upstart Kurisu who's keeping everyone going, and even more, you're never short of any quircky interactions to keep you watching.  But be warned, it's definitely not a lighthearted series, in spite of that. ~ @"The Kakuzato"

    Other:
Baccano!: Beginner. Too serious to be a comedy, not serious enough to be a drama, and definitely not an "action" show, and with an English dub better than the original Japanese, Baccano is certainly an oddity among anime. Between the artstyle, the American setting, and the overall very "western" feel to it, you'll sometimes forget that it's even an anime. It features a non-linear progression to its plot, which skillfully presents information only as you need it, managing to keep you interested, trying to figure out just what's going on.  It's supposed to be confusing, and by the end, you'll be going "Everything makes sense now!" Oh, and pretty much everything happens on a train.  A train called... The Flying Pussyfoot.  Yeah. ~ @"The Kakuzato"

FLCL: Moderate-Advanced/Parody. 6 episodes of sheer insanity. There are references absolutely everywhere in this It doesn't feel like it's ever going anywhere, and I'm sure that watching it is similar to taking drugs.  At it's heart, it's about a boy going through puberty. But that's just the setup. Don't worry if you're confused.  Everyone is. I don't think anybody quite understands it. Yet most will say that they though it was really good, and they won't exactly be able to tell you why. @"The Kakuzato"

Seeing as how most members of ZEJ are pretty much weeaboos (Seriously guys, admit it.), I figured that the forum looks strange without a thread specifically made for the discussion of Anime and Manga.  Here you can do whatever you wish, make a list of anime/manga you've seen/are watching/read/are reading/whatever.  Write reviews, and most of all, just discuss Japanese Entertainment.

    Without further ado, let's begin.

So I just watched episodes 1-9 of Kill la Kill.  This shit is glorious.  And just to let you all know, I watch it for the plot.  And the characters.  You all know how much of a characterization nut I am.

Maybe someday I might like.  Go full out with organizing this post into something more... official-sounding.  *shrugs*

So after today's Kill La Kill....I'm starting to seriously look at the direction of: http://i.minus.com/ibdZu431ChdRek.gif

  8. RE: Kill la Kill is Glorious (aka the Anime and Manga Thread)

What is this anime even about?

  9. RE: Kill la Kill is Glorious (aka the Anime and Manga Thread)

Magical Girls and Henshin-Related Clothing, or lack thereof.

  10. RE: Kill la Kill is Glorious (aka the Anime and Manga Thread)

We ourselves keep asking this question every now and then even though we are practically halfway through. Your best bet would be watching the first episode yourself, really.

  11. RE: Kill la Kill is Glorious (aka the Anime and Manga Thread)

I like how you have to mention that this is the anime and manga thread for KLK because no one on this forum would know otherwise.

  12. RE: Kill la Kill is Glorious (aka the Anime and Manga Thread)

Actually I titled it the way I did because that's how a lot of big forums title their threads. It's actually SUPPOSED to be a general anime and manga thread, just with Kill la Kill taking precedence because super hype.

  13. RE: Kill la Kill is Glorious (aka the Anime and Manga Thread)

May as well just remove the 'general' aspect of it since it is just solely Kill la Kek!

  14. Space Dandy

So I just watched the first episode of Space Dandy and uhhh...I think you guys should check it out.

  15. RE: The General Anime Thread (Kill La Kill Is Glorious Edition)

Just feel that this latest episode was underwhelming.

However, there's always room for climax!

  16. RE: The General Anime Thread (Kill La Kill Is Glorious Edition)

Since this IS, once again, the general anime thread again...

Lastnight, I watched this little anime called Sekai Seifuku: Bōryaku no Zvezda (translation: World Conquest ~ Zvezda Plot), and I must say, it's pretty damn amazing. Not that I understand what the fuck is happening, but it's amazing nonetheless. My only conplaint about it is the outfit the loli world conquerer has... I just dislike seeing fanservice-y outfits on young girls like that.

If I had to try to explain the anime...

A loli named Kate (or Lady Venera, her codename) is hatching a plot to conquer the world. We know from the opening of the first episode that she succeeds. In the midst of this, a high school boy named Asuta gets caught up in the plot...

    And hilarity ensues.

This anime is pretty much built around the concept of "hilarity ensues."

  17. RE: The General Anime Thread (Kill La Kill Is Glorious Edition)

    Meanwhile in Space Dandy............................................................

I hope there is a Plot soon.

  18. RE: The General Anime Thread (Kill La Kill Is Glorious Edition)

Who is the best Zvezda and why is it Kate?

  19. RE: The General Anime Thread (Kill La Kill Is Glorious Edition)

    Sorry but Natasha.

  20. RE: The General Anime Thread (Kill La Kill Is Glorious Edition)

Everyone knows the best character is the water bucket. Sorry not sorry.

    Anyway, Meanwhile in Space Dandy.........................................................

Was episode 4 even remotely canon?!
