4. ~ NickServ FAQ ~

Before getting frustrated with technology and wanting to throw your computer against the wall, make sure that you consult this document. You might find that your problem can be solved easier than you thought possible!

~ List of Notable Commands ~

HELP

Syntax: /msg NickServ help or /ns help in some clients.

"NickServ allows you to "register" a nickname and prevent others from using it. The following commands allow for registration and maintenance of nicknames; to use them, type /msg NickServ command. For more information on a specific command, type /msg NickServ HELP command."

When performed corrcetly, you should receive a notice or a message from NickServ containing all of the NickServ commands available to you, some of which I'll explain below.

REGISTER

Syntax: /msg NickServ register [password ] or /ns register [password ]

Additional parameters:

Password - required chosen password you must enter to identify to your nick of choice

Email - the email address you choose to tie your account to

"Registers your nickname in the NickServ database. Once your nick is registered, you can use the SET and ACCESS commands to configure your nick's settings as you like them. Make sure you remember the password you use when registering - you'll need it to make changes to your nick later. (Note that case matters! ANOPE, Anope, and
anope are all different passwords!)

~ Guidelines on choosing passwords:

Passwords should not be easily guessable. For example, using your real name as a password is a bad idea. Using your nickname as a password is a much worse idea ;) and, in fact, NickServ will not allow it. Also, short
passwords are vulnerable to trial-and-error searches, so you should choose a password at least 5 characters long. Finally, spaces cannot be used in passwords.

The email parameter is optional and will set the email for your nick immediately. However, it may be required on certain networks (like ParadoxIRC). Your privacy is respected; this e-mail won't be given to any third-party person."

In order to register a nickname, the email you provide must be valid so that it's proven you are a real person.

When performed correctly, the system should show you a success message like the following:

Nickname "Nick" has been successfully registered under your account "email@example.com"

From here on out, in order to use that nick, you must identify yourself to services each time you log on to IRC, which will be explained as well.

IDENTIFY

Syntax: /msg NickServ identify [password] or /ns identify [password]

Additional parameters: Password - the password you chose to register your nickname with.

"Tells NickServ that you are really the owner of this nick. Many commands require you to authenticate yourself with this command before you use them. The password should be the same one you sent with the REGISTER command."

When performed correctly, NickServ will inform you that you have identified successfully.

If you are to forget the password you set, you must contact an IRC Operator, for user retrieval is not possible.
They may either retrieve the password you set or they may set a new one for you.

5. ~ ChanServ FAQ ~

In addition to NickServ, ParadoxIRC provides a way to maintain your own room, called a 'channel'. When registered with ChanServ your channel will set and allow you to set a variety of modes to control the particular channel, along with many options for adding various levels of moderators for the channel.

~ List of Notable Commands ~

To register a channel with ChanServ you first need to join the channel. Once you are in the channel, make sure you have at least @ (op) status in the channel and that it is not currently registered. You may check to see if a channel is registered by typing:
/msg Chanserv info #CHANNELNAME -- where #CHANNELNAME is in this document, please replace with your own channel name.
This will provide you with information on the channel in your status window.

Providing the channel you are wanting to register does not belong to another user, you are free to register!
/msg Chanserv register #CHANNELNAME PASSWORD DESCRIPTION

You type the above line remembering to replace #CHANNELNAME with the name of the channel you are wanting to register, you will need to change the PASSWORD field to a password that you will remember but will not be easily guessed and DESCRIPTION to a short description of your new channel.

Along with registering a channel you have various options in adding moderators to maintain the channel. You may use the access list which lets you set users at a certain rank by number -- which you may also edit -- or you can use ChanServ's built in, easy to use modes.

SOP - SuperOP basically, they have admin and auto @(op) status and can add/del Akick (auto kick, the added user cannot join the room and will be automatically kick/banned upon entry), can add/del AOPs, and can ban and kick users and change channel modes if mlock is not set (mode lock prevents anyone other than channel owners/founders from changing modes).
/Chanserv SOP #CHANNELNAME add NICK -- you will need to change #CHANNELNAME to your channel and NICK to the user you are wanting to add. To remove an SOP from your room, simply change the ADD to DEL.

AOP - AutoOP and is essentially the same as SOP except for these users cannot add or remove Akicks from channels or add or remove any kind of user access. They can edit channel modes if mlock is not set.
/Chanserv AOP #CHANNELNAME add NICK -- you will need to change #CHANNELNAME to your channel and NICK to the user you are wanting to add. To remove an AOP from your room, simply change the ADD to DEL.

HOP - HalfOps which is essentially what these users are. They can ban and kick users and change channel modes provided mlock is not set. They cannot add or remove akicks.
/Chanserv HOP #CHANNELNAME add NICK -- you will need to change #CHANNELNAME to your channel and NICK to the user you are wanting to add. To remove an HOP from your room, simply change the ADD to DEL.

VOP - VoiceOPs do not have any ban/kick privilages. This mode is basically for when you have a moderated channel (+m -- only voiceop and above can type in the channel), anyone that does not have at least +v (+) cannot speak in the channel if moderated.
/Chanserv VOP #CHANNELNAME add NICK -- you will need to change #CHANNELNAME to your channel and NICK to the user you are wanting to add. To remove an VOP from your room, simply change the ADD to DEL.

---

Then there are also a few other things one needs to know how to do as a shiny new channel owner:

First of all, one needs to know how to be able to kick a user from a room.

To kick a user, simply paste this universal syntax into your client:

/kick user #channel reason

The user being the user you wish to kick, the channel being the channel you wish to kick them from, and the reason being why you want to kick them.

Then there are bans.

There are a couple of different types of bans, but the only important ones are +b and +b ~q:.

The main difference between the two are the fact that one entirely bans a user from a room also muting and shunning them (that is ignoring any commands sent to that room) and the other being just a vocal mute, they can't say anything in that channel, but they may leave and go as they please.

To set either of these bans, copy and paste the following universal syntax into your client:

/mode #channel +b *!*@host.here

OR

/mode #channel +b ~q:*!*@host.here
