{Fantasy ~ SP} Mirror Magic: Dreams of a Resolution

{In a land far far away,}
{Lies a bounty of dreams whose power does sway.}
{Keeps evil eyes and hands at bay,}

Thus went the old folktale that was sung in our planetary-empire of Aefora ({a͡efa͡ɔ̩ʀa̋}, /ɛəfɔːɾɑː/) about the Soisyshtra ({cɔ́u̯͡ɪca̯͡ɪʃtʀa̋}, /səʊwiːsaɪʃtɾɑː/, 'Psyche Stream') that surrounding the one-planet solar system that Aefora belongs to.

The Soisyshtra was an enigmatic and semi-abstract, semi-sentient entity that swirled and flowed in ornate sequences creating temporary imprints in beautiful motifs as it eddied and rippled, a milky, misty fog of abstractions and ideas, invisible to the naked eye from Aefora. It was motivated by a single, singular force – the magic of dreams.

This is a long story. Why don't you make yourself comfortable? Care for a spot of tea? No? That's too bad. Anyway, I will go on.

Long, long ago, our ancestors, the ancient and wise Aeforeruhas ({a͡efa͡ɔ̩ʀe̩ʀuʜac}, /ɛəfɔːɾɜːɾuhɑːs/, 'children of Aefora'), used to visit the Soisyshtra on a daily basis through their dreams. They were Imaginative souls, bless them, and had souls pure and strong enough to leave their earthly bodies during their sleep and visit the Soisyshtra, who, in turn for their Imaginative contributions (for, you see, it was these very dreams, generated by Imagination, that act as a motive force for the Soisyshtra) would always work to ensure that these dreams were pleasant. Not a soul who had dreams would experience the plague we currently are experiencing these accursed says. No, the word 'nightmare' they did not know. The Raeshtorjhas ({ʀa͡eʃta͡ɔ̩ʀĵac}, /ɾæʃtɔːɾd͡ʒʱɑːs/, 'evil ones') never did visit them.

You know the story of the Soisyshtra, do you not? It is said that the Dreamers, those of our ancient Aeforeruhas who exhibited the ability to dream Lucidly, could walk the halls of the metaphysical plane in an ethereal avatar of themselves. There were never more than a handful of Dreamers at a time. Still, they exhibited other odd powers that ordinary folks cannot comprehend. For one, it is said that they possessed the power of Insight. The stories talk of the Soisyshtra's halls being lined with mirrors that, when Seen Into by those with Insight, would effectively act as portals to different Soisyshtras and world without ours.

But now... It is said that these mirrors are collapsing. It is said that when a world cannot any longer support its Soisyshtra, when its people stop dreaming, the mirrors weaken; their Seals break; they let in the Raeshtorjhas, the Intermediates, the beings that live in between Soisyshtras and worlds. The very same is happening to ours... people don't seem to dream anymore. All that today's Aeforians are doing are falling into eternal nightmares, the oblivion that is the curse of a Raeshtorjha. Our Soisyshtra is on the brink of collapse - and when it does collapse, it will cut off our world; people will fall into coma, tormented forever by nightmares, and then they will find peace in death.

How do I know so much? — here the old Wisewoman gives out a loud cackle. — My dear, I want you to answer a question first. Come forward; show me your eyes. — She leans forward. — Hah, trust a Dreamer to recognise a Dreamer. You still have dreams, don't you, dear? Not just any dreams... You dream Lucidly. You have walked the halls of our Soisyshtra. Your eyes have the same far off, dreamy quality that my fellow Dreamers did... I used to be a Dreamer too, but it is a power that deteriorates with age. The only remnant of my power is that I am never touched by the Raeshtorjhas... A blessing, indeed. Those who Dreamt with me when I Dreamt, they are all passed on — but you, your powers, they are fierce. You want to do something about this, don't you? — the Wisewoman sat back in her comfortable armchair and let out a hefty sigh. — I know that you will not be stopped. You are a Dreamer, after all! I will however wish you the best of luck, and will support you the best I can.​

Welcome to the RP — Mirror Magic: Dreams of a Resolution. You are the heroes who shall help seal off the Mirrors of the Soisyshtras and deal with the Raeshtorjhas. It goes without saying that it is the imperative to unlock people from their nightmares and prevent as many oblivions as possible. (Although it is not necessary to refer to them by their Aeforei names, it is preferable.)

This roleplay will be conducted in a statistical format, albeit with a style divergent from the style common to statistical roleplays here. One person will be controlling a single character, and this character, while entirely human in 'real life' in Aefora, can in the dreams take on any avatar that comes close to expressing the human's inner mind and character – their psyche, so to speak. This avatar will be used in the statistical portion of the roleplay, and will have certain special powers that the human self will not.

This will be a roleplay with no predefined limit, although there will be an 'end'. Choices and decisions play heavily, and as yet I have had three different endings happen over four different iterations of the roleplay; I will be looking at different implementations of the roleplay itself, however – that would be to say different ways the story is motivated.
