Faeria

Faeria is a strategy card game that's currently in Early Access on Steam. Its main draw is that it's a card game that's also a board game; it features the card and economy systems you see in games such as Hearthstone and introduces the additional dimension of managing and playing on a board that the players themselves create in the course of each game. It's a really beautiful game, and though it's still in Early Access, it works pretty well in its current form and what it already has set up is more than enough, in my opinion, to catch one's interest and make players excited for Faeria's future.

If any ZEJ members reading this find themselves intrigued by Faeria and wish to try it out for themselves, you can contact me for a code which allows free access to its Early Access (especially seeing as it is $25 on Steam at present). Our community's long had a sidelong obsession with card games, and I think it'd be really cool to make Faeria one of those games, so don't be shy about asking for a code!

  2. Casually tagging people that I know have Steam to see if they're interested.

  3. I'm too scared of getting addicted to card games and devoting the rest of my time to them, so I'm gonna have to pass on this.

Oh, and I feel you guys would love Duelyst too. It's a mix of TCG and FF Tactics.

  4. @Jonno I already have this game

  5. Card games tend to be fun, but before I threw any of my money at these guys I'd want to know all the rules and see how an actual match plays out. Nothing like buying a whole set a cards and then deciding you don't like how a game is played after all. Also, no idea if they do this, but I'm not a fan of it when an online card game utilizes real money to buy more cards. That's a large reason why I stopped playing Hearthstone.

  6. @Zantok I still have several codes which allow free access to the Early Access if you're interested. They do have micro-transactions within the game to buy cards, but that's certainly not the only way to get them. You can gradually get more as you play more, of course, and there's a crafting system where you can destroy cards you have excess of or cards you don't want in order to get specific cards (even the rarest ones). I also wouldn't say you really need to spend money or grind at all to be able to have success in the game-- that is to say, players who spend money to buy cards don't have that much of an in-game advantage over those who don't. They will probably have more unique cards, but even those aren't explicitly stronger-- even the rarest cards normally just lend themselves more to specific strategies than being overtly strong. From the beginning, the developers have communicated that they want to avoid the pay-to-win model, and so money is basically used as an alternative to having to play the game more for more cards.

  7. Now that I'm finally done with exams I can take the time to look into this a little more. I'll give you more of a definitive answer once I've actually done my homework, Professor C. Lycan...!

I've caught wind of this before and definitely thought about giving it a shot. What are your thoughts on it, Mudster? Does anyone else play?

  8. I played Duelyst for a little bit. It's pretty good, somewhat similar to Faeria in the sense that it kind of combines the card game with board game elements. I can't say for certain about the state of either game from a balance standpoint, I haven't played enough of either. But I know for a fact I always groan when I have to fight a green deck in Faeria, or Songhai in Duelyst.
