Euthora-Roul ~ Veni Dulcis Amica Mea

Discussion in 'Creation Station' started by Keileon, Sep 9, 2012.

  1. Title is in Latin. This is a short fic of ER canon- not a one-shot, but not very long. It takes place at about the same time as Fyreborne starting at about Chapter 7. Despite the canon, it has very little to do with dragons and concentrates more on Fera Mutat Speciem- the Euthoran Shapeshifter. It'll be updated whenever I feel like writing. If I've just posted a chapter and it seems unfinished, it probably is. Just wait for me to post the rest.

Chapter One ~ The Other Side of the Fence

    Veni Dulcis Amica Mea
    Cum Qua Iocari et Suaviari
    Et Teneras Delicas Sumere
    Et in Amore Finire.

    -- Draco Splendous

The boy was there. On the other side of the fence.

Astrya had gotten used to his presence. The street-boy, slightly older-looking than her, watching from the bushes outside the courtyard fence as she played with the nevermelting animated ice rabbit her father had conjoured up with his magic. She'd first noticed him a month before, and had screamed at the pair of bright orange eyes watching her. Her father had come running. He'd thrown an ice spear at the boy. The boy had run, giving Astrya a glimpse of his slight build, ragged clothes, startling blue hair. Her father had scoffed, saying something about filthy animals. The boy didn't look like an animal.

But the boy came back several days later, and fled when the twelve-year-old girl had noticed him. He came back again. And again. He seemed wistful, longing, but cautious. He always ran when he was seen. Astrya had learned to avoid looking at him when she played in the yard, though from the corner of her eye she could see his slightly glowing orange eyes. They were strange. Sometimes Astrya would see people with strange eyes and hair, but her father always kept them away from her. And as this boy watched her from outside the fence with his own strange eyes, she spoke. "Veniunt hic."

It was Latin for "come here", but the boy stiffened. He didn't respond- maybe he didn't understand her? She looked at him, and the bush rustled as if he was about to run away. Astrya stood quickly, almost running to the boy. "No, no, wait! Don't run. I won't hurt you." The rustling stopped, and the boy poked his head out of the bush, a few leaves remaining in his azure hair. His eyes were frightened as Astrya approached. "What's your name?" She asked, hoping he would calm down.

The boy gave her a shy, wary look. "K- Kalves..." He said, voice quiet. Astrya sat on the grass next to the fence. The ice rabbit bounded over, oblivious to everything but the fact that its owner had walked away. Kalves gave it a curious look, then after some hesitation sat on the ground as well, directly across the fence from Astrya. "... And you?" He asked shyly.

    "Astrya," She replied brightly.

"... Oh. Okay, then," Kalves replied with a nod, resolutely not making eye contact.

They sat in silence for several seconds. Then Kalves stood, muttering an apology, and started to walk away. Astrya grabbed his wrist through the fence and stood with him, causing him to stiffen as he attempted to pull away, but she didn't let go. "Wait! Don't go." Kalves sighed, but stopped trying to pull away and looked at Astrya. "Why do you always sit in the bushes and just... well, watch? You don't have to run away."

Kalves hesitated, meeting her eyes for the first time, crystal blue meeting bright orange. He tilted his head, a funny gesture for a person. "You people... interest me." Astrya was about to ask what he meant, but Kalves suddenly looked at the door leading into the large building, eyes giving a scared light again. He pulled away with surprising strength- "I'm sorry-" and bolted, out of sight by the time Astrya's mother came out of the building and told her it was time to come in. Astrya stood at the fence, mystified at the boy... but obeyed her mother and came inside, hoping to see Kalves again.

  3. You should really continue this. It reminds me of a certain WWII story but...it's cute.
