Ellon Chronicles: Dreams on the Horizon

Discussion in 'Statistical Roleplays' started by Silver, Jul 12, 2015.

  1. At Asima's gentle touch, the barmaid stirs slightly. Her eyes flutter open. She looks horrified at first, but smiles as she realizes that Asima is not one of the bar bums that were causing issues. She sits up a little too quickly and her head spins, however, so she lays back down without too much complaint. "Th-thank you," she says, "I'm alright, really." She reaches into her pocket and pulls out a fistful of herbs. "You could use some of these though."

Seeing himself outnumbered now, the drunk faltered for a moment. Somewhere, deep inside, his sensibilities knew better than to try and resist as the short knight had questioned him, but that side of him was washed out by the many cups of gin he had swallowed earlier in the night. He charged the knight apprentice and delivered a quick punch, but the girl's barrier practically absorbed it instantly.

"Good to hear," the man stated, green eyes locking on the man that seemed intent on fighting regardless of his continuously slipping odds of making it out of here a free man. The Captain did not say anything to the man directly, nor did he give an order to his apprentice. He merely watched with an intensity as the girl struck the man with the blunt edge of her blade once more, the steel coated in a different layer of magick.

  2. As the last of the bar bums fell into unconsciousness, the Captain surveyed their wounds noticing that the only cut-like marks were very minor and had to have been made when his apprentice had taken over for the girl. The rest of their bruises were welts, likely from the girl's hand-to-hand fighting. A quick glance at the foreigner detailed that she did, indeed, have a weapon on her––a knife remained tucked in one of her boots––but she had opted not to use it, despite the blatant cut someone had dealt her. His emerald-colored eyes, however, did not linger on the younger woman's toned frame. They fell on his Apprentice and he offered her a smile which spoke of pride, but not overly so. Just enough so that she could indeed grasp that the job had been handled properly. "Well done, Jill," he remarked, "a knight knows when to use force and the appropriate way to combat their enemies. These men have a few cuts on them, but nothing the palace healers won't be able to handle before they're taken in for questioning."

The knight apprentice, named Jill apparently, nodded firmly. The faintest tinges of a smile pulled at the corners of her mouth, but she did not allow it to grace her face. Gratitude was fine but she had not done a perfect job. If the men had no cuts on them it would have been great. If she had been able to detain them peacefully it would have been better. Although her Captain considered this mission a success, she still felt she had a long way to go before she officially became a knight of the order. Nevertheless she responded with, "thank you, Captain." She sheathed her blade and made a move to go over to one of the drunkards, but stopped short, looking to him once again for his approval. "Permission to detain the offenders?" she asked, an effect to her voice making it quite obvious that she was reprimanding herself internally for not awaiting orders before acting.

"Granted. Proceed," he stated, pausing only to let her take two steps before he spoke again. "Oh and Jill," she froze, "take it easy on yourself. No need to be so stiff."

The girl faltered, but nodded, her back turned to him. "Y-yes, Captain." And with that she eased her way back into arresting the men responsible for the bar brawl.

The Captain then turned his attention toward Asima, his green orbs bearing into hers. He paused for a moment before reaching into a satchel strapped opposite his blade and offered the girl a rag. "Quite brave of you to take on three men by yourself," he commented, looking her up and down. She was definitely a foreigner. Likely a refugee from the Winoan Empire––she looked as though she had barely just brushed into town. "And to do it all without drawing your weapon," he continued, nodding to the dagger in her boot. A glimmer crossed his eyes and he gave her an unreadable look. "What is your name, child?"

  3. Asima offered the best smile she could to the barmaid, despite the eye that was beginning to swell shut, split lip, and blood staining her teeth an ugly red color. The girl got to her feet, groaning and clutching the wound on her side. Her shirt was absolutely soaked now, and Asima was beginning to feel very weak. First day in, and she already had the shit kicked out of her. At least she dished out some damage to the drunks.

The captain was talking to his subordinate. The knights from Alsonde took apprentices, didn't they? Perhaps that's what the girl was. Asima guessed that they were close to the same age. She leaned against the bar, trying to catch her breath. The girl sat there, breathing heavily for a while before realizing that the captain was offering her a rag, and trying to speak to her. Asima snapped to a standing position, trying to hide her weariness. She took the rag from him with a nod of her head, then began to wipe the blood, spit, and sweat from her face. Hopefully she'd have a chance to wash up before  bed. She was dirty before from the journey to Arcedes, but not she was filthy.

It took a while for Asima to respond, since she was giddy from a knight talking to her. Blood loss also made it sort of hard to think. "Th-thank you," she squeaked. "I'm from Rekks, in the deserts of the Winoan Empire. Pretty slummy, compared to here. I'm used to fightin', I'm afraid."

She sighed, lifting her shirt and placing the rag over the gash on her abdomen and applying pressure. Hopefully it'd stop bleeding soon, and she could get bandaged up. Or maybe the knight would even heal her with magic! She was lost in her thoughts, once again not realizing the captain was speaking. She flushed, even though it probably was undetectable. "O-oh. Sorry, my name is Asima. Asima Qamar."

  4. "Asima," he said quietly, that same glimmer caught in his eye like a star shining behind his pupil. He offered her a small smile and a nod. This girl––this refugee no less––certainly had potential. She clearly knew the appropriate force to use for this situation and how to handle herself in a fight. The man looked as though he was considering something for the longest time, and in truth he was, but the glimmer faded. He had an apprentice already. Although he could very well take another, it was not a decision to be made lightly. Not to mention the girl looked well worse for wear than most first day refugees that found themselves in town. She would likely prefer her chance to wash up and sleep and find her bearings before having her world toppled upside down yet again. He nodded once more. "Very good," he added in a more direct voice, "I thank you for your assistance in this matter. There's no telling how things would have gone if you hadn't stepped in. But you are probably aware of this. Nevertheless you have my gratitude." He turned to Jill, who had just finished binding the men together in a series of magical chains she had conjured. They were still unconscious––all for the better as far as the Knight Captain was concerned. "Jill," he called, causing the girl to stiffen for a moment before easing and turning her attention on the girl. "If you could heal her, please," he said with a motion.

"Yes, Captain," the knight apprentice stated, diverting her attention to focus on another spell simultaneously. With a wave of her hand, a small sphere of blue light appeared hovering in front of Asima. It dove right through her chest and surely she felt its warmth flooding through her entire body as her wounds instantly stitched themselves back together. When the feeling faded, she would find it was almost as if the harm had never been done to her. Not even a scar left behind as a reminder of this night. Jill bowed her head for moment. "That should be sufficient," she concluded, reinforcing her chains a little more as she gave Asima a once over. It certainly felt like she was healed completely. Jill nodded. "Further orders, Captain?"

The Captain's green eyes lingered on Asima for a moment before he nodded once more. Perhaps he would not turn her world upside down, but, should she wish to lend her skills to similar causes in the future, he would give her that"Yes, Jill," he stated evenly, "can you conjure a stone for me? I'd like to present it to Asima here for a job well done."

Jill's eyes shot wide open and she looked like she meant to protest, but she did not speak. She nodded with a slight grimace and quickly went about weaving her magicks some more. A sphere of purple mana appeared in her hand and suddenly all sorts of weird colors swirled around in it as a light began to glow. It continue like this for exactly thirty seconds before it popped in a burst of sparkling light. In Jill's hand lay a magenta-colored stone bearing slight resemblance to a heart, although it was quite misshapen and the silvery swirls made it seem more like a shimmering lump than anything else. She held it tight for a moment before relinquishing it to her commander, who took Asima's hands and placed it in her palms sincerely.

"I wish not to further bother you tonight, but please take this. It is one of limitless special magicked artifacts known as the Stone of Amity. It helps to forge connections with those you meet along your journey in life. If you ever find yourself in a situation of dire need, please use it. One of the Knights of the Royal City shall come to your aid. But I warn you, this is not a gift I offer lightly. Misuse will not be tolerated. If I come to find that I have misjudged you I shall take it back." He let go of her hands, eyes still sincere as he took a step back. "I hope that next we meet it will be by the Fates' good fortune," he said, turning away to focus on the men his ally had detained. He gestured and the chains lifted, carrying the men along as he headed for the door. "Come along, Jill."

The girl stared at Asima for awhile, but turned on her heels sharply and followed her commander when he called. With the two of them departed and most of the bar now settled, it seemed Asima was left to decide for herself.

  5. She stared up at the captain wide-eyed. She was so honored that he would present her with such a gift. Did that mean she had a shot at becoming a knight? Perhaps she'd find out in due time. But for now, she was exhausted. Her wounds being healed helped tremendously, even if the sensation was kind of...itchy. She took a quick glance around the bar, to see that people were still staring at her. Perhaps not with malicious intent, but she still felt like she was being intensely scrutinized. She scratched her arm absentmindedly. "I'll...see ya guys around...maybe..." Each word was quieter than the last, and she finished the sentence by skittering off to the inn. She hoped there was a place to bathe on the other side.

Regardless, Asima relished the thought of not sleeping in the dirt, and planned to sleep for a very long time. Then, in the morning (or afternoon as was likely if Asima slept as long as she wanted) she would run off to find more information about the knights. A fire burned in the girl's heart now, and it was the captain who fanned the spark into a flame.

Asima peeked around the inn--she'd been told that she was the only refugee but she hadn't met the owner yet. Mayella was her name, if the foreigner remembered correctly. "Miss Mayella?" she called out tentatively, keeping her eyes peeled for the woman.

  6. From further within the Inn, a large woman with skin almost as dark as the night came bounding at the sound of her name. She was incredibly plump and appeared to have been sleeping (considering the nightgown she wore), but that did not stop her cocoa brown eyes from looking inviting and heartwarming as she approached. "Mhmm sugar, how can I help you?" she spoke with a voice as thick and sweet as honey as she lit a lamp and sat down behind the front counter. "Ahh! Wait! Don tell me," she said suddenly, eyeing Asima up and down for a hot second before coming up from behind the counter and wrapping the girl in a massive hug. "Aww baby girl, you must be Asima! Larry tole me bout you," she chimed, letting go of the young girl and settling her down. "I gotcha room all taken care of. Bath is out back––don git no hot water till morrow mornin' though. Just head downstairs and git sum rest. Lawd knows you'll need it." And with that she padded back to her room happily.

  7. Thankfully the knight apprentice from earlier healed Asima, otherwise the woman's bear hug might've been the end of the poor refugee. She didn't even get a chance to respond to the woman, she was too busy trying to catch her breath. "Thank you, Miss Mayella..." she groaned as the woman made her way back to her bed. Asima took a moment to look around the room. She'd be living her for now, even if it wasn't for long. Might as well familiarize herself with the surroundings.

Next she made her way down to the bath, and took a very long soak. A contented sigh escaped her lips as she lowered herself into the water. Hot or not, it felt wonderful to cleanse herself from the grime of the road, and the leftover blood from the barfight. By the time she got out, the water was discolored and filthy. She drained it and leisurely strolled to her room, collapsing on top of the bed.

I wasn't expecting a bed...Alsonde is such a wonderful place. Asima let out a gusty sigh and relaxed. In no time, she drifted off to a deep sleep.

  8. The room may not have been luxurious, but it certainly held a certain quality of rightness to it. Much more pleasant than the wastes of Rekks that only produced life thanks to the single tiny spring which somehow managed to spew forth water year round. As Asima lay in bed, she felt the comfort Miss Mayella had taken to setting the room up for her––the heavy quilt and fluffy pillow perfect for her aching and weary body. It may not have been the barracks for the Knights of the Royal City, but it was warm. It was safe. And most importantly, it was home.

Asima may have wanted to lay in bed all morning, but there was little doubt she would be able to with Miss Mayella's cooking. The kitchen sat just above the refugee's quarters and, even if the large busty woman hadn't been shuffling about and clattering pots and pans, the aromatic magnificence that wafted through the inn, winding its way down the stairs would have woken her immediately. After all, who could resist the smell of blueberry pancakes, fresh cut fruit, juicy bacon, and hashbrowns sizzling in the griddle. Certainly not a starving refugee who hadn't gotten her fill yesterday and only been offered a cup of gin which she had abandoned! It was only a matter of time before she brought herself upstairs, upon which Miss Mayella shrieked with delight.

"Good mornin' sugar pie," she greeted cheerily, taking a quick moment to scoop Asima up in another bear hug before dexterously getting back to her cooking. "Brekfust'll be reddy in just a minute baby," she added quickly, flipping a pancake with flourish and catching it expertly. No sooner than she had said that did she gather up a plate and settle the foreign girl in the small dining room attached nearby. She skittered off for about three seconds before returning with some tin utensils and a cup of milk, laying everything out nice and neat before stepping back. "Now you eat up! Let me know if I can gitcha anything else sugar," she said with a wink.

  9. Asima slept like the dead--the sound of Mayella bustling about the kitchen hardly roused her from her sleep, but what fully  brought her to consciousness was the smell. The girl bolted upright, taking in a deep breath. She hadn't eaten in at least 24 hours. The delicious scent made her realize exactly how ravenous she was. She got out of bed slowly, wishing she had something other than her torn and bloody clothes to wear. She'd slept nude the night before as to not dirty up the clean sheets Mayella so obviously left out with care. The thought brought a small smile to Asima's lips.

She hurried upstairs, once again not even having time to respond before the plump woman wrapped her up in a rib-crushing hug. At least this time the girl could brace herself. "Good mornin'!" she replied, a smile spreading wide across her face. This truly is home...I've gotta find a way to repay this woman for her kindness, Asima thought. She was herded into a small dining room, with a plate piled high with food set in front of her. In Rekks, this would've been considered a feast. Regardless, Asima bowed her head to the woman. "Thank you so much, Miss Mayella," she said. For some reason, the girl found it hard not to get emotional. Normally she didn't cry, or show much emotion in general, but the sheer display of kindness really got to her. Nobody was this accepting and generous back h-

No, Rekks isn't home. Not any more. This is home. Not the Empire. Alsonde.

She smiled brightly again at the woman, then began to devour her food. Maybe it was due to the starvation, but the food was so tasty the girl almost couldn't handle it. Even if Asima wasn't holding back tears, she probably might've started crying at the absolute divinity of the food. After wolfing down half of the meal without saying anything, the girl paused to look back up to Mayella. "This might be one of the most delicious meals I've ever had the pleasure of tastin' in my life. Thank you. Really." She grinned at the hostess again, taking a moment to scrub at her eyes so she wouldn't cry.

  10. Miss Mayella beamed. Her dark eyes lit up and she flashed the girl a pearly smile that was so sweet it almost sang for her. "You're very welcome, sugar," she responded jovially, "you just let me know if you needin' anything. I'll do mah best to help ya baby girl." She offered Asima one last heartfelt squeeze before drifting out of the dining room and back into the kitchen. Back to the clattering of pots and pans––more hashbrowns on the griddle, more pancakes to flip, and more cups of love to pour to add to every recipe. After all, Asima wasn't the only person staying in the inn––she just so happened to be the only refugee––the paying guests would be down soon expecting everything well beyond the meal the older woman had prepared for the younger foreign girl.

The food was quite filling. Even if Asima had wanted more, she probably would not have been able to stomach it. Despite not being made in the palace or even for royalty, it was quite rich and definitely would have to be enjoyed in small quantities. With Mayella busy preparing for her other guests it left Asima with no particular course of action. She was free to explore the town if she so desired.

  11. Asima flashed Mayella yet another smile as she walked off. It's home, alright. Mayella's practically my mother already. She called out her gratitude once more and headed down the stairs, pushing her  way through the door and out into the hustle and bustle of the city. She walked around for a while, to get a feel for the streets; she looped around several times, getting lost once or twice. At least she had her immediate surroundings memorized, and she was confident she could get back the inn.

She located several stores, for future reference. There was a nice-looking smithy that she'd make sure to pay a visit to later, when she had more money. Perhaps she could get her knife sharpened and cleaned, or if she made a nice chunk of money somehow, she could even get a sword and shield. She'd start to feel like a real knight then.

"First things first. Gotta find a job," she said to herself, making her way to the request board. There were three requests up now; one to deal with a rat infestation, one to gather potions outside of town, and one to help a mage test her familiars. She wasn't sure about the familiar one, since it was posted by someone named "Matilda the Foul". She'd probably end up getting hurt by the familiars. The rat infestation seemed like something an untested warrior-to-be would do to gain a bit of experience with swinging around weapons, so Asima would leave it for now. If nobody picked it up by the next day, she'd take care of it so the poor woman could go home.

The potion commission, however, seemed like a fine job to Asima. She could go out into the country, and look around some more. She could see the flora and fauna of the  countryside, and she'd help someone with their endeavors. She pulled the flier down, and read the specific instructions. If I can get enough money to buy a sword after this, I can probably help that woman  with her familiar testing. I'd love to take that job, but there's somethin' fishy about it, for sure.

  12. And so Asima quickly decided to help Curious Wesley on his quest to create this new potion. After reading the flier, she found she had to go to the edge of the Royal City, past the darker section of the city where the buildings appeared to be made of a blackened wood. Everyone around here didn't look quite as friendly, but not a single soul was non-cordial as she passed by––not one person failed to offer her a hello of some sort, even if it sounded and looked colder than the people she had seen beforehand.

Eventually she came upon the building that the flier detailed: a small, one story structure made entirely of bricks, some of which shaped the outline of a dragon. She knocked once only to have the door swing open at her touch.

"If you're here about the rent I told you already, I'll have it to you next Sunday!" a high pitched, yet undeniably masculine voice called out.

  13. Surprisingly, it didn't take the foreign girl too long to traverse through the city. The farther she got away from the inn, though, she noticed the people were slightly...colder. Not hostile, but wary of the newcomer in their midst. No matter, I would still give my life to protect these people. Asima thought to herself, holding her head high as she finished the trek to the commissioner's house.

The house in question was  very obvious; the bricks formed the outline of a dragon, which was easy enough to find. She paused for a moment, taking a deep  breath before knocking on the door, ready to give her best sales pitch. It swung open faster than she anticipated and she hesitated for a moment. Then a voice called out, with the nature of the statement giving Asima another reason to pause. She waited a moment, trying to formulate something to say. It was completely unexpected to her, but she managed a simple sentence. "Uh...I'm here about your post on the request board?" she called out, confusion obvious in her tone. She took a tentative step inside, glancing around, trying to find the source of the voice.

  14. The second Asima stepped inside the door almost swung back to close, but not in a trapping or unfriendly way. Closer inspection revealed that someone had built a stout little contraption which hit the inside of the door to close it. It hadn't quite done the job it was clearly intended to do, but it was rather interesting nonetheless. The inside of the house, or at leas the entry way, was made of a deep mahogany wood, the walls covered in tapestries that depicted fearsome beasts and the parts that made them up. Little notes were hung everywhere––some affixed in place by magick––and had all sorts of scribblings regarding ingredients, measurements, and the effects of different potions. The front room ended pretty quickly and Asima could see that the rest of the house was made of a dark stone the color of storm clouds. This led all the way into the back where a makeshift bed was propped up against one wall with a massive cauldron and several vials and beakers and magicked mechanisms strewn about the rest. The man, who had undoubtedly answered her knocks, was poised over a desk opposite the wall with the bed that was covered in papers. He peeked up only after hearing the girl enter, looking at her intently with his muddy red eyes.

"My what?" he inquired for a moment before a sudden look of realization flashed on his face and he smiled widely revealing that his teeth were a strange cerulean color. They shone dimly with a strange energy but other than that he seemed fairly normal. Well... as normal as a man living in this house could look. "Ahh! Yes, yes, do come in," he welcomed warmly, gesturing for the squire to come into the attached room. "I was wondering when or even if I would find somebody," he explained, collecting some rather massive books from a bookshelf by the bed and setting them down in the shape of a stool, offering it to the girl when he was finished. "I'm sure you want to know the details of the job. Well, it's fairly simple: I'm currently attempting to perfect a potion and I believe I've found all the ingredients necessary to produce such a tonic, but the ingredients are, shall we say... difficult to acquire for a reasonable price in the market. However," he quickly spun around and grabbed one of the tomes he had been reading from his desk, "I've learned that the prime ingredients can sometimes be found near and around the riverbeds rushing into Lake Horren during this time of the year! Normally, I'd head out first thing, but the knights have informed me that the local monster populations are on the rise and while I may be quite the capable scientist I'm admittedly lackluster on the field of battle." He coughed, looking a little embarrassed for a moment before a gleam filled his eyes. He took Asima's hands in his own, smiling that strange azure smile of his. "That's where you come in, my dear!" he exclaimed gleefully, letting go of her hands but not losing that smile. "I'm hoping you could escort me out into the River Plains and keep me safe while I collect the ingredients I need. As the flier said, there is ample reward for you––gold and perhaps something of even greater value. Eh... what do you say?"

  15. The instant she stepped in, Asima was in a near-continuous state of confusion. The inside for the house was definitely odd, even if all the magic and science apparatuses scattered about were reminiscent of some areas of the Empire. It was all so strange to the girl all the same. When she'd gotten over the building, it was the man that lived within that really scrambled her thoughts.

Blue teeth? What the hell...? She'd never seen such strange teeth in her life. What strange concoctions did this man brew? She managed a smile back at him. At least he seemed agreeable enough. In the end, it might even be beneficial for the girl to befriend the chemist. Asima suddenly recalled the stone that the captain had given her the previous night. Could she use it to contact people like Wesley? She'd have to find out later.

The girl didn't say anything until the man was done with his presentation, quietly taking a seat on the stool he offered her. A small grin formed on her lips as he finished his presentation. "Well, I'm definitely the right person for the job! You see, I'm a refugee. I haven't been here long but I've already fallen in love with Alsonde, and I want to become a knight. This is perfect practice for me, and it's also allowing you to follow your dreams! When d'you want to leave?" she asked him excitedly. Protect him from monsters? Why this was practical experience she could use!

  16. The smile Wesley gave Asima looked as though it might rip his face in half! "Why right now of course! Yes, yes of course right now!" he declared, picking up speed as he dashed about his house collecting books and vials and beakers and flasks until finally he had a sizable mountain of stuff in his arms. He then casually eased his way over to the desk and snatched a strange purple satchel from it, opening it with a little difficulty before magically shoving the pile into the bag with ease. A small poof of blue sparkles shot upward afterward and he turned holding the pouch tightly in his hand. "Shall we go?" he asked.

The duo were quick to leave, heading southwest to the edge of the city. They passed through the checkpoint and even more swiftly headed off further west. Lake Horren was not too terribly far from the city––only about a half an hour on foot––and the journey was filled with sunshine and breeze unlike the vast deserts that accompanied the Empire. The two just barely reached an old faded sign marked River Plains when the sights the two had been awaiting came into perfect view.

The River Plains, as they were, were lush and green, filled with wildflowers from which bees danced between gathering nectar. Animals of all sorts, particularly River Dreamhares bounce along the fields, a few of the lighter ones skipping across the river that cut through the middle of the plains. Just a few feet from their position a peculiar looking bush with crystaline berries sat, the bees and other insects feasting on some of the flowers that had yet to berry. Wesley looked incredibly bright-eyed as he gazed upon it, his strange blue smile spread as always. "There is the first ingredient," he proclaimed, pointing at the bush and the many sparkling berries. "Crystalis acinum, or Bubble Dream berries as the commoners would say," he explained with much excitement. "I need five of them for the potion. Let's harvest some quick before–" But Wesley was quickly cut off by a growl that came from their left.

Three hyena-looking creatures the color of mud with bold cyan stripes running along their backs approached, snarling and quite prepared to encircle the trespassing humans. Wesley's joyful attitude disappeared on the drifting breeze. He grabbed Asima's arm. His whole body was shaking. "T-Those are River Razortooths..." he squeaked, "t-they're quite vicious..."

    "Don't worry Wesley,"
Asima said, drawing the knife out of her boot, "You get the berries, I'll deal with these guys." The beasts sure looked ferocious, even if the color of them was slightly ridiculous. But this was a chance to prove herself against monsters, and she'd gladly take the opportunity to fight them!

  19. Asima moves to H3! (I4 > I3 > H3)

Asima activated Heavy Strikeback! (0/10 DD)

She charged towards two of the beasts, mentally preparing herself for the fight to come. After her brawl the previous night, she was ready to not hold back. These things looked like they'd provide a suitable challenge, so she'd make sure to fight with everything she had. They're pack animals, looks like. That means they're going to surround me...Perfect. I'll let 'em jump at me, slash when they attack me. Aim for the next and face...
