Arcane Inquisition

Discussion in 'Interest Checks' started by CodasterTheDisaster, Dec 3, 2015.

  1. In the year 2022, NASA warned of a numerous amount of  asteroids, comets, and other such space objects hurtling towards Earth. This of course, caused mass panic among the people, but many world governments mostly ignored it. By 2024, people had  mostly forgot about the cataclysmic event that was to occur, and late in 2025 the first meteorite struck the planet. The object crashed into the ocean, so no major damage was done, but there were a few massive waves that crashed against the shores around the world. Weeks later, another meteorite hit. This one struck Brazil, and destroyed many homes and ended many lives. Then Japan was hit. Then Germany. New York and San Francisco were also destroyed, not to mention countless hits in the countryside around the world. Despite all the death and destruction, it wasn't as much of a doomsday event as many people thought, even though the technological standard was thrown back several decades.

Society reorganized quickly, and scientists began to try and get a grasp of what happened, since they thought that the planet should have been a molten ball of rock. In fact, the first thing meteorologists and geologists noticed was that none of the meteorites could be found; in fact, it seemed like every object that hit the planet directly increased the size of Earth. A new continent cropped up between Africa and South America, about the size of the United States and Mexico combined. This new continent was named  'Ferrumont'. Initial explorations of the shore determined that the land contained no visible life, but it was no doubt covered in microbial life.

Initial exploration of the new continent baffled the scientists. The ground was covered in soft sand, with high mineral content--soil analysis showed that there were high amounts of iron, titanium, and even diamond, and traces of many other minerals. Amidst all the confusion and rebuilding of cities and governments around the world, the countries that could still convene at a UN summit did so. They were to decide what would become of the unclaimed land. However, a decision was never reached as another phenomenon--arguably even stranger than the planet suddenly expanding--occurred. One of the scientists assigned to the first exploration mission of Ferrumont claimed he could cause unnatural phenomena at will. Several others that had been to Ferrumont delivered similar testimonies. Within months, hundreds of thousands of people had a sudden ability to use magic. New departments studied the unofficially-named 'magicians' and determined that there was a metaphysical force at work, that only manifested physically at the behest of a mage.

Despite no acts of hatred by the mages, the general public, including government officials, viewed the magicians in a very negative light. The UN decreed that all humans possessing that ability to manipulate mana (the name given to the metaphysical force magicians controlled) be rounded up and forced to live in containment camps, where they would be studied by scientists until the nature of mana could be deemed harmless. Even with the negative view of magic, many people were outraged by the enslavement of such a large population. The magicians and regular humans who did not agree with the choice to relocate magic users rioted and attacked the containment camps. In an attempt to prevent further violence, both against the government and against mages, a massive facility was built on Ferrumont designed to isolate the magicians and the scientists who studied them.

By the year 2038, construction had finished on the facility. It was designed as a massive, walled-off city, with smaller suburbs protruding around the perimeter of the wall. Each of the suburbs contained a large academy in the middle which doubled as a research facility. Each academy was designed for a certain school of magic; the Elementalists, who could manipulate fire, water, earth, or air; Conjurers, who summoned creatures or objects seemingly out of thin air; Druids,  who interacted with all living organisms; Alchemists, who manipulated chemicals and elements; and Artificers, those who fused magic and technology.

The Magician's City, as it came to be known, stood for decades. However, the studies on mana progressed at an agonizing rate, and the treatment of magicians was never any better. In the year 2070, society was nearly rebuilt, and back to the level of technology of the pre-mana world. After an attempted coup d'etat, the UN constructed a joint-force military base 60 miles inland from the City. Constant patrols and guard posts dotted every area of the city and the academies. However, the increased military involvement did the opposite effect that was intended; rather than be pacified, the rage of the magicians only burned hotter, and a second, more vicious coup  was staged. A long, bloody battled ensued, and the magicians were the victors. Days after the initial battle, the mages attacked the military base, and once more emerged victorious.

A man in his early thirties, giving his name as only "Archmage" declared the City and military base as property of  the Mage's Republic of Ferrumont, renaming the City Arcania, and the base Atlantis. Despite cries for more military intervention, the governments of the world were not keen on starting World War 3. However, the United States lay claim to another section of Ferrumont, and formed the Arcane Inquisition--A society meant to deal with the mages.

Hey guys I made a magic academy/war genre mashup. Basically the events of this RP are going to be right after the final battle that made the MRF a country. The characters can either be mages or inquisitors, and the RP will take place in Arcania initially. I'll be using ShadowSystem, and Eebit will be my co-GM. I'm hoping to get this RP started within the next two weeks, so that after finals are over we'll all have something to do during break :p

Please let me know if you are interested or have any questions.

  2. I'll bite (don't worry, my bark is worse). Is there an age restriction? I'm thinking of a mage student on the later scale of adolescence, I believe.

  3. I'd say the youngest age I would allow would be 12.

  4. Also, I forgot to mention, but the way mana works in this RP will be manaverse-style; there just hasn't been any discoveries as to how mana works in this RP.

  5. Interest is piqued. Although I can't help but wonder if I should be investing myself in more RPs given my time is only going to decrease as my college days approach...

I'll have to think over it...!

  7. Realized I hadn't posted here yet, so I'm in as well. Of course, that kind of follows from the fact that I'll be the co-GM!

  8. ...
The God of Ellipses has spoken!
You'll likely get an artificer of sorts from me

  9. This sounds like fun, I'm interested!
