Ace Attorney-Inspired Roleplay

Discussion in 'Interest Checks' started by Eebit, Oct 3, 2015.

  1. I've been watching a guy play through the Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney games lately, and I've been really enjoying the games and their dynamics. It's been really neat to watch. I kind of would be interested in doing a similar sort of whimsical/light-hearted courtroom drama as a roleplay -- there'd be no fantastical elements to speak of, just a standard pseudo-realistic courtroom and investigation process.

Would anyone be interested in either playing a role in something like that, or at the very least helping me plan out some cases "behind the scenes"? I love the twists and turns that the Ace Attorney games bring to the table, but I'm not sure I'd be able to come up with complex cases just on a whim.

As a fan of the Ace Attorney series, I'll be glad to be a part of his! :D Plus, all I pretty much watch on TV besides Walking Dead would be Crime Dramas xD

    Ahahaha- YES. PLEASE.
    I love this.

  4. RE: What Do You Want to Play?

Would you guys want such a roleplay to feature anything in particular? I've started brainstorming with Jonno about potential ideas, but I'd love to hear what you guys would like to see, if anything.

On a more serious note, perhaps a bit of a psuedo-statplay element? Not really like a statplay but definitely sharing the trait of having a mechanics system and a GM. Like, GM makes cases and whatever and maybe plays as suspects or random NPC and there's options like... IDK maybe like:
    Code:
    (GM)
(Desc. text of the scene or furthering the roleplay through the character the GM currently controls)

    >Talk: Person A
    >Examine:
    __>Object 1
    __>Object 2
    >Move:
    __>Area 1
    __>Area 2
    >Inventory

    ....
    (PLAYER1)
    >Talk: Person A
    __>"(enter speech)"

    ....
    (PLAYER2)
    >Inventory

    ....
    (GM)
    (RP segment, including A's reply)
    >Inventory Check:
    __>Item 1
    __>Item 2
    __>Item 3

    (List of commands again)

  6. RE: What Do You Want to Play?

Yup! That's something of the idea. I will be acting as the GM and controlling the suspects and the majority of the NPCs. Whoever opts to join in will get to be the investigators during the investigation aspect of the cases, and (eventually) the attorney/co-counsel when we enter court. I plan to try and keep it faithful enough to the actual Ace Attorney games in that you guys will get a "Court Record" with profiles of the major players in the case, any pertinent evidence, etc. all stored in a profile thread, akin to an inventory in a statplay. It'll naturally be on you guys to try and pick through the puzzles and uncover the evidence/testimony with contradictions.

In a sense, it'll be sort of like a roleplay and a choose-your-own-adventure had a beautiful lovechild and got to see it grow up to go to law school.

e: Also, forgot to say that there'll be a health bar and stuff like that. You'll get penalized for sucking in court or for being a dick to the witnesses probably

  11. Is this still a thing that might happen? I'm all for it!

  12. It's definitely within the realm of possibility! I'll admit that I've been slacking off when it comes to crafting the cases/characters, but I was chatting about it with @Zantok last night, which rekindled my interest in running it.

The plan is, so far, to have an original setting (most likely a city based on ZEJ's "landscape") with original characters, but mostly staying true to the formula of the Ace Attorney games. You guys will naturally be taking on the role of the defense team, so you can decide amongst yourselves who is going to be the attorney, the co-counsel, etc. I might have witness roles in place if this gets big enough... but for now I am planning to take control of the witnesses/judge, and giving control of the prosecution to a select person or couple people.

A lot of details are still up in the air, but if anyone has any baseline ideas for cases and whatnot, I am definitely receptive to new ideas. Feel free to shoot me a PM!

  13. I'm not an expert on this subject, but I love watching and reading courtroom dramas. I'm very intrigued and I hope this becomes a Thing that I can partake in <3

  14. I'd highly recommend checking the games out! If you're interested in courtroom dramas and some light crime-solving games, I assure you that 'drama' is one thing the AA games do not lack. They're quite full of twists, great music, and a colourful cast of characters to boot.

  15. Ace Attorney is an absolutely brilliant series of games that really captures the essence of the classic courtroom subgenre, from its complexity and wit, to moments of frivolity to ease things up, with a bit of polish thanks to a lick of modern paint. As Eebit as already said, it comes as highly, highly recommended for anyone that comes in expressing their interest in this RP! Of course, that said, I'm up for it, as well. I understand that it'll be quite the endeavor just to settle down and craft the storyline, for starters, but this will really be an event once we get this one on the road.

At the very least, ohhhh yes macguffin, it’s happenin’. :5

  16. So, with Spirit of Justice being released recently I've been on a bit of a kick with the Ace Attorney series again. On my drive back to unitown today I was listening to the orchestrated soundtracks that have been issued, and my mind wandered back to this idea. Is this still something people would be interested in? I'd kind of like to have a co-GM step in with me and work on some cases.
