Reclamation

  1. Zein nodded tersely and immediately focused on the cat that already managed to take Malik by surprise. "Moron!" she called out teasingly, leaping at the cat and grabbing its tail. She severed it, and lunged forward again, wrapping her arms around it so it wouldn't be able to run away. She allowed Malik to finish it off and take his tooth from the necklace. Apparently Roxanne got snagged by one of the cats because Marcus was helping her up, and examining something on the girl's leg. Did she get stung?

Riley scooped up Roxanne and Sydney scooped up Marcus, creating two very odd combat duos. Zein couldn't help but burst out laughing. Riley zipped by and informed Zein and her mute comrade that they shouldn't stay still. A quick survey around the arena showed that the new monsters were working in tandem with the cats, creating potentially lethal traps. That was, if any of the monsters would actually kill a child. She began walking in a wide circle at a brisk pace, watching for where a mole would strike. "Somebody get caught, we need to bait one of the moles out to get its tooth!" she called out, beckoning to Malik and walking closer to the group. If she saw a subtle movement in the sand beneath her, she'd let the mole capture her. Since they were working in a group, she wasn't too terrified of being grabbed.

  2. Roxanne was bracing herself for unimaginable pain. For something to fall off. For anything? There was a mild heat and that's about it. Weird. Okay.

Marcus saved her ass, getting her up. She started to say "I'm fi-" before she was scooped up by Riley to keep her moving and being saved from being tugged down by the dumb mole things. This was weird, and she didn't like getting saved all the time. Somehow it kept happening, and she did appreciate it, but she was sick of that. When Riley said she could walk, she rolled her eyes and hopped down, rolling to a stop. "Keep those cat things off of me. They're unpleasant, but I don't think their stingers do anything." She stopped, waiting for a mole to circle around her.

She was watching the ground, and watched the sand get upturned as one came towards her. When it was close enough, she stabbed the sword into the ground repeatedly. She heard agonized animal screeching coming from the ground, and knew she had hit her target. She kept stabbing until the screaming stopped, and then she started digging until she found the mangled corpse. Ugh. Gross.

Roxanne unhooked the necklace of teeth and held it up. She took one off, and stuffed it into her bra with the other one. "Next!"

  3. Roxanne's body continued to heat up, and the tingly feeling worsened. What happened next was like a brick wall. Suddenly she would be unable to feel the heat in her legs. Heck, she wouldn't be able to feel her legs at all.

"Shit, put me down!" Marcus began to kick like a little child on Sydney's back and used the pole of his spear to pry himself off of her. "'m okay by myself 'ere, goddamnit!" He kicked until he fell and landed on his ass, and he immediately noticed a trail of dirt moving straight for him. He quickly pulled himself up and waited for the mole creature to get close. It looked like something out of a platform game: He hopped up with greater height thanks to his Flow and pointed his spear downward so he could impale the creature on the way down. It would've gone perfectly--if a cat didn't tackle him from the side. Suddenly he was on his back, using his spear to block the cat's scratches and its tail. With it so close in range, his spear was useless--

A shadowy hand rose up from the ground and pulled the cat by the tail away from Marcus, straight into a familiar spiked shield. Without any question, Marcus got up and ran to Roxanne again, deciding that trying to take down another mole useless if they already had one and took one of the mole teeth.

  4. Roxanne felt the tingling worsen and tried to dismiss it. She'd be fine. They wouldn't kill her, right? Right? The heat was getting uncomfortable, and she let out a hiss.

And then she couldn't feel anything.

Next thing she knew she was on the ground. The lack of feeling made her legs give out beneath her. "I... I can't feel my legs..." Her eyes were wide with terror, and she kept trying to pat her legs to get some pain or something. Anything. "Guys, I can't feel my legs."

  5. Riley unsheathed the falcata, doing her best to keep the cats off Roxanne just as she was told. She heard a sound, as if someone fell, and turned.

"Ah, shit." She sped forward, standing closer to Roxanne to provide better protection as she hacked away at a cats neck before allowing it to fall. Her movements were a lot less graceful and flowing, and her forceful hacking and chopping (while effective) was leaving her a blood-covered mess. She saw the tell-tale sign of moles and turned to Roxanne "Sorry about the blood but uh- Can't leave you lying there so..." She lifted her team member up, trying to keep her away from her own bloodied body and clothing.
    ---
Sydney yelped as one of Marcus' panicked kicks hit her "Son of a-"
She heard Marcus fall before she saw it, but when she turned the cat was already approaching him. Before she could act, he was saved by a shadow- the kid, perhaps? She shouted out a thanks, in case he was still nearby and helped Marcus up "Have fun busting your ass?"
    ---
Riley huffed and panted, hoping no one could hear. Against better judgement, she had barely eaten since she had come to the tower. She was fine normally, but all this activity was finally wearing on her. Her legs felt weak and her head hurt more than she'd liked to admit. She stepped away from the moles slowly, if she ran she knew she'd fall. She couldn't fall, not while carrying her teammate. That would just end up bad for the both of them in such a dangerous situation. Slowly, as she walked back, she shifted Roxanne onto one arm, praying her strength would let her carry her. With the other, she tightly gripped her blade. As the moles came closer, she lifted the blade weakly, before her body began to literally blow off steam. She was still normal temperature, but tiny wafts of steam could be seen coming off of her.
And suddenly her weakness was gone. The weight of hunger replaced, no- more like converted, into the vigor of immense strength. She rushed forward, blade stabbing through two moles who had stood in a row before decapitating another. She laughed, her eyes threatening to tear- she'd done it "Guess I activated my flow, whatever it is."

  6. "No! Ah, god. Put me down!" Roxanne cried out, struggling with the top half of her body. "You can't fight like this! You'll get us both killed! Put me down!" She felt like a mermaid. A stupid, useless mermaid out of water. Her legs were just dangling there like it was no big deal. "This shit better as FUCK wear off or I will go on ANOTHER murder spree after the one I have planned!!!" She looked back to Riley. "Put me down. Get the other tooth as fast as you can and we'll have enough points to get the fuck out of here. I can at least stab things. I have my sword. Get me another tooth, use your kickass flow whatever it is, and PUT ME DOWN!!!" She did not like being carried like a helpless child. Nope. No way.

  7. "Got it, Rox." She nodded, grinning as she lifted up the teeth from the ground. She slipped one into Roxanne's hand and put the other into her pocket, the third she'd keep for Sydney. She put Roxanne down slowly "Maybe sit? Since, you know, leg bite? Sorry, just- maybe it's best?" She looked down at her blood drenched clothing and sighed before tossing her extra tooth to Sydney and skating off, dispatching two moles. As she swept past the the group again, she nodded "Good luck, I believe in you! I belieeeeeveee~" but she was already darting towards Zein and Malik, offering out the two teeth.

  8. With Roxanne's apparently paralysis being the only setback, the team was already well ahead of the others in defeating these monsters. Some kids were still having trouble with the cats! The team only had to defeat one more kind of monster in order to finish the challenge.

The door swung open, and immediately a flock of birds swarmed out. They were blue and translucent, like ice, and the teeth around their neck was completely different that the ones the moles and the cats had. Marcus, deciding to end this quickly, threw his spear right at one of the birds. The bird immediately shattered and exploded into several small ice shards, injuring and temporarily freezing whoever was too close to the explosion. Marcus decided to brace against the cold and ran straight in there to get the necklace before anyone else could steal it from him. He got in there, grabbed it, and got out, cold and shivering.

If Roxanne was close enough to the explosion, she would have felt her legs (along with the rest of her body) go cold, and for a moment she would be able to feel her toes again. Then her body would've heated up again, followed by the same numbness in her legs.

  9. Malik nodded towards Zein as a silent thank you for saving his ass before sheathing his dagger and drawing another arrow. He watched as the situation unfolded around him and watched in awe as Riley killed three moles in rapid succession. It was pretty cool. Especially with Roxanne on her back. One of the moles had been decapitated so he ran towards the beast and picked up the necklace with all five teeth still on it and put it around his neck. Then an idea popped into his head as he ran towards the corpse of a cat. As he ran towards the corpse, he took out his tomahawk and slid to a stop beside the creature's tail and chopped off the stinger and what he assumed was the poison sac underneath it. This stuff could come in handy later, he thought, and put the stingers in his pack before running off again.

He watched Riley put down Roxanne and a quick inspection showed that the blood covering Riley was not her own, which was good. Instead, his attention was turned towards Roxanne as he quickly scribbled out a note to her that said, "What's wrong?" in big black letters. The boy assumed something was wrong because she had not stood up after being put down. Hopefully this would be the only person he'd have to put back together during this event.

  10. "Hell yes!" Riley patted Marcus on the back, lightly this time as she didn't want to almost topple him again, before taking a tooth. Sydney gave a thumbs up while taking hers "I'd give you a medal! But I obviously don't have any."
Riley sheathed the falcata and slipped off her leather armor- man, these really needed to be washed- tucking it under her arm. She looked around at the people still having trouble with the cats- good thing they had been a team, huh? Riley sighed and stretched, but in her ridiculous position she stumbled back and fell onto the floor.
    "Riley!"
"Ah shit." She lifted her right arm which had landed on small pieces of ice that had fallen on the floor "Ha- at least, uh, at least the challenge is over?"

  11. The burst of cold air was unpleasant as hell. Cold and Roxanne don't mix. But she felt cold on her legs! Feeling! Or...not. Never mind. Back to numbness. Fuck.

She stabbed a cat that leaped at her. "Fuck off, asswipe," she snapped, and stabbed down into the ground when a mole tried to circle around her. Nope. Not feeling this right now. She was paralyzed, she was angry at having to be carried around, and there was cat blood all over her. Not a good day. At least Marcus grabbed those teeth quickly. Now to get over there before they poofed out of the arena.

She managed to shift herself onto her stomach and started army crawling towards her friends. This was a slow process, and the shards of ice was cutting at her stomach, since her shirt was sliding upward due to the friction. Malik came by asking what was wrong in his own special snowflake way, and she waved him off. "Don't worry about me. Just a sting. I need that damn tooth so I don't FUCKING DIE!" she snapped again. Another cat tried to pounce on her and she rolled over and slashed it in half, covering herself with its blood. More blood. This sucks more than the near-drowning experience. Fuck this challenge. Fuck Vanthus. Fuck this tournament.

  12. "Come on, let's get her out of here." Marcus tossed the tooth to Roxanne and offered her a hand. "Up, up." He pretty much dragged her to the exit, where Vanthus and Anya were waiting. Completely ignoring Vanthus, Marcus dropped the teeth into Anya's hand and asked her what they could do for Roxanne's legs. Her reply was quick and simple: ice. He nodded and thanked her for the information while still blatantly ignoring Vanthus. Rude.

The door opened back up to the main hall, and the stuff for lunch was already out. Since they were still pretty much the first people to finish, the main hall was almost completely empty. Only the little girl in her white dress was across the room, eying the food curiously. Marcus helped Roxanne sit at one of the tables. "'ll get the ice for y', so just stay here." Without waiting for her reply, he nodded and disappeared into the storage room.

As soon as he left, the little girl noticed Roxanne and ran towards her--but something looked a little off. There appeared to be something poking out of her back, trying to break through her dress. But it didn't look like she noticed at all. "Hello!"

  13. Roxanne shoved the tooth in her bra and draped herself on Marcus, who dragged her to the exit. Marcus may have ignored Vanthus, but Roxanne didn't; she flipped him off as Anya told them that the answer to getting rid of this was ice. Huh. Explained the thing with the birds.

He put her at one of the tables. "Not like I really can go anywhere. Thanks, Marcus." She couldn't help but think that if he were alive, Richard would be doing what Marcus was doing. Richard would be freaking out right now, but he'd be carrying her out of the arena. She was doing well for herself, given how she'd been very dependent on her brother before, and she was proud of that. But she still had a long way to go.

Then that little girl showed up. Now, she hadn't quite had the same odd encounters as everyone else with her, not that she really knew that, but it looked like there was something weird on her back. Best not to comment on that for now. "Hi there," she said, turning her attention entirely to her.

  14. The little girl looked over Roxanne with worried eyes. "What's wrong~?" She squatted down and started to gently poke Roxanne's legs.

It wasn't long until Marcus came back with a bucket of ice. "Watch out, kiddo." He wait for the girl to move before placing the bucket by Roxanne's feet. A light bulb suddenly went off in the girl's head.

"Oh! Ohohohoh! I see!" After a short pause, the girl pouted. "Shee~sh!" She went off, mumbling to herself about "those silly scientists" and how they were using stuff without permission. With her turned away from them now, it was a little easier to see the protrusion in her back. It didn't seem to have a particular shape, but it tapered to a point at the end.

Marcus ignored her and helped Roxanne with the ice. Slowly she would feel the feeling return to her legs, but then it was replaced by numbness again--except this time, it was from the ice, not the poison.

  15. Roxanne watched the girl go before starting to help more with the ice. "Thanks again. Sorry I wasn't of much use back there," she said as she put the ice on her legs. They worked in silence before she said "Hey, it's starting to work!" and smiled. Yay feeling. Feeling is good. Then it was becoming cold numbness. Then what? "So, when you hit that bird, I did feel a bit of that chill, but it was only temporary. Now I'm hesitating on whether or not I should take the ice off and have the numbness be forever or if I'm going to live the rest of my life in an ice cube. Neither sound incredibly pleasant." Her hands were freezing, and she could bet his were too. "You should probably get yourself something hot to drink after this though."

  16. After saving Malik and watching as Riley zooped all over the arena with Roxanne in tow, Zein mostly stalked around everyone's back, trying to make sure nobody got blindsided. She apparently did a poor job since Roxanne kept getting attacked while she lie on the sand. Whatever, though. Zein silently vowed she'd take up a broadsword or something once she got back, since the dagger was forcing her to get really close to the  monsters, and that wasn't all that fun. The birds came out, and Marcus instantly used his spear as a javelin and smashed it into a bunch of tiny ice birds. Zein shielded her face, ignoring the cold of the birds. Too bad her cold resistance didn't protect her from the slicing shards of ice. She shrugged it off and ignored the small cuts over her arms and charged forward, trying to claim the third tooth.

"Wait until we get 'ported out of here to try and help her, Malik," Zein muttered in his ear. "Until then let's keep the hordes off of her." She took a moment to wipe blood on her clothing so she could hold onto her dagger better. "I'll watch your back if  you can snag me a tooth," she called out to whoever was hunting down the birds.

  17. "Well, might as well have a look 'nd see," Marcus said, guiding her legs back out of the bucket. "Maybe the cold you felt back then wasn't enough or somethin'." As Roxanne's legs slowly returned to normal body temperature, the feeling in her legs also returned. This time, the numbness was gone for good.

"Uh-huh! Mr. Hickson here is one-hundred percent correctomundo!" The little girl returned to the two with cups of hot chocolate in hand, ignoring Marcus' apparent discomfort of being referred to by his last name. "The poison's effects are triggered by heat, so if you cool yourself down for a good amount of time, then it'll wear off!" She handed a cup to both of them. "The poison won't leave you body naturally for a while, though, so there's a chance that it'll happen again if your body gets too hot."

Marcus gave the girl a curious look. "How do you know this?"

"I know everything about this place!"

  18. Roxanne accepted the hot chocolate and sipped it gratefully. "Thanks, kid," she said with a smile.

As feeling returned to her legs, she moved them around a little, and grinned. "Huzzah! Feeling is great!" She hugged Marcus in gratitude for a few seconds. "Thanks, bud. You rock." She ruffled his hair, and turned her attention back to the girl. "So, how do you know so much about the tower? Besides being in with assholes like Vanthus?" She said his name bitterly, like she would say an icky medicine. "And if you really know so much, can you please explain this nighttime thing and how to make the bracelets stop sounding like they're about to electrocute us?"

  19. Marcus accepted the hug like it was nothing and took a sip from his hot chocolate, turning his attention to the girl.

"I know everything about it!" The girl exclaimed. "I made it, after all. Everything in this tower belongs to me." She took Roxanne's hand and examined the bracelet. "Mr. Thadius made these. He used a version of this before the Storm to watch his subject's life signals, and she wore her's around her neck like a collar. I think she still might be wearing it, actually. Since they're powered off of the Flow, they react to when there's large amounts of it, like yesterday. That's why they got all static-y and such, but they should be back to normal now." She nodded, content with showing off her knowledge.

Marcus' ears perked up as a light bulb went off in his head. Right, he had that book that he got yesterday... But was it really a good idea to bring it up now? Other contestants began to enter the main hall, and he might get in trouble if the shadow kid overheard them talking about it... The troubled look on his face was clear to see.

  20. After saving Malik and watching as Riley zooped all over the arena with Roxanne in tow, Zein mostly stalked around everyone's back, trying to make sure nobody got blindsided. She took a moment to wipe blood on her clothing so she could hold onto her dagger better. "I'll watch your back if  you can snag me a tooth," she called out to whoever was hunting down the birds. Eventually, she ended up with her final tooth, and crossed back to the tower not far  behind Roxanne and Marcus. The little girl was present, watching Marcus and Roxanne rub ice all over the girl's legs. Zein just arced an eyebrow at them and walked by, taking a seat on the stairs. Something was sticking out of the girl's back, but the pale girl was more interested in when lunch would be ready. The battle left her scratched up, tired, and hungry. Though it was the latter that was bothering her the most.

She leaned back and stared at the ceiling for a bit, before sparing a glance at Roxanne, the little girl, and Marcus once Roxanne had apparently regained usage of her legs once more. There was something about Marcus's expression that piqued Zein's interest. She arched an eyebrow at him once more, wondering if he'd ever let her know what was troubling him.
