The knight lowers his shield slowly, seeming surprised that the dragons decided not to attack him after all. He glances past the flight towards the observing mage on the ridge- the mage's expression seems neutral, but also surprised. As the knight begins to edge cautiously toward the ledge, he speaks to the golden dragon once more.

"Your mercy will not be forgotten, dragon, but I would advise you not to try this with others like us," he says earnestly. "Not many would give up the hunt for your kind, even when pressed like... this." He makes a gesture to the corpses littered around the dragons, looking almost ruefully at them.

The mage interrupts by calling out, over his shoulder as he is now kneeled by one of the charred bodies above, seeming to examine it. "I would have a word with you, dragons." The mage's voice is calm, almost conversational, as if he knows this conflict is at an end.

The Firedrake snorts as the knight retreats, but his attention is drawn to the mage as he calls out. With a leap like a predatory cat, the old dragon lands easily at the top of the ledge, startling the mage somewhat as he fixes amber eyes onto him.

"If you wish to have a word, then speak," the Firedrake replies smoothly, surprisingly in the humans' own language, and seeming more fluent than the Golden Firedrake had been moments earlier. While the scarlet dragon is not in a hostile position, his stillness and hyperfocused attention seem almost disconcerting.

    [Feravel moves to F5.

  2. Chaneak was snapped out of his fate-reading trance by the growing unrest of his allies. They seemed to think poorly of him, sans the mysterious firedrake. Perhaps wasting time with his weapon was giving a worse impression than he had intended. “Allegiances is too strong a word, Akensken. My disease has just softened my heart along with my strength.” Chaneak griped his covers, hurt by the insult to them. “And I hoard too much of my old garbage.” Chaneak readjusted his weapon, snapping it's chains from waving freely and packaged them in their compartments, loaded for attack.

    But then, the fight ended.

It was odd. Chaneak himself thought his plea rejected. He had no idea what the other dragons thought, and how that might influence their judgement of this event. It seemed the human caster had found something, something so interesting that he was willing to speak to enemy blood about it. In an active effort to have the first word of this peace, Chaneak spoke up for himself: “Judge me for my weakness as you will, but let me make one thing absolutely clear. I am by no means unaware of backstabbing. I do not fear it. And neither should you.” With that, Chaneak followed the human to the ridge. He was excited to see what the human had found. Jealous, really, that his search of the human corpses had been so fruitless. He was fearful that the bloodlust of his kin would ruin his chance to learn something interesting, and to leave the remaining humans with (hopefully) a lesson learned.

  3. Stiria almost snarled. Almost. She kept the anger bubbling in her veins from surfacing. The older dragon had allowed this cease-fire and if she dared to interrupt the newfound peace it could potentially spell her doom. The world could fault the wyvern for being selfish, vengeful, and short-tempered; it could not, however, call her a fool. The Stellar Wyvern knew a losing battle when she saw one and turning against the older dragon would not play out in her favor. She hissed to herself and began to cycle her energy reserve – that would be the least she could do for now.

The human was retreating. It seemed like none of their foes intended to continue the fight-- quite the contrary, in fact, judging by the True Firedrake's actions; they were trying to start a conversation, it appeared. Akensken didn't allow himself to relax quite yet, but figured he could go along with the situation for now, especially seeing as both friendly Firedrakes seemed accepting of it. The Armored Wyvern, however, couldn't understand the language the humans spoke as the fire king and even Chaneak seemed to be able to, and thus had to rely on observing their actions and the small movements of the former adversaries' bodies to attempt an understanding at their intentions. Akensken turned to look at Chaneak as the smaller drake spoke, but frequently glanced at each of the humans in turn while listening. Hearing that the scrawny Firedrake had a sickness didn't come as a surprise to Akensken, but the dragon's words which came after a pause provoked him; "I am by no means unaware of backstabbing. I do not fear it. And neither should you."

They frustrated him. A spark in his chest ignited beneath the russet crystal resting therein, filling his worn muscles with a dull flame. "You do not fear treachery?" the wyvern echoed, snorting as he lumbered after Chaneak, ignoring the corpse he trod on in doing so. "To not fear betrayal is to not fear death," he rumbled with a scolding tone, anger pouring out from the back of his throat. He towered above the Golden Firedrake with a leer in his eyes when he came to stand beside the smaller dragon. "That's all well if you're concerned only about yourself, but in showing mercy and turning your back on an enemy, that could be another dragon's song you're allowing to end. I've seen it happen." The Armored Wyvern drew a breath, his cavernous breast resonating with emotion. "I won't tolerate it," he hissed heavily.

He knew he ought to calm down. His simmering gaze turned to the distance. Another deep, quaking breath. "I do not fear the scorchback," he continued in a calmer, more subdued tone. "I fear that he will bring suffering on another where I could have prevented it. I hope that you, too, are not unaware of this possibility."

  5. Ridiculous. Utter and complete fools. These other dragons were practically offering themselves as martyrs. No human could be trusted; they were like ravenous beasts with naught but the basest of drives. Still, Ira was not entirely foolish herself. The situation was devolving rapidly into some kind of edgy stand off. The Coralwing knew it was unlikely she could take the remaining humans on her own, and now wasn't certain she could depend on any support should she try. But this was not going to end on peaceful terms... not if Ira had any say in the matter. And the particles of golden light that lazily danced about her marked her progress.

Though seeming disconcerted by the drgons moving about, some obviously displeased, the mage straightens up with a tube of bone in his left hand. Sparing a glance to the dragons milling about below and the knight clambering back over the ridge, the man's eyes meet the amber gaze of the old Firedrake they had been hunting moments before. "There was a bounty on your head, dragon," the mage stated plainly, earning an amused snort from the would-be prey. "We'll leave you be now, but you're probably aware that there will be more."

The other mage leaned against the cliff wall, watching the proceedings and exchanging a bored glance with the knight before speaking up. "Fruxon, we need to get moving if we aren't taking this one down. There's still one left, and I think he's more important than socializing with the enemy."

Fruxon waved her off and gestured to the old Firedrake with the tube. "I'm getting to that. If you dragons want peace so badly, perhaps you could take a look at our next contract before someone else decides to kill him. Mitigate the bloodshed, you know? We want this over with as much as I'm sure you do." Without waiting for a response, Fruxon tosses the tube to the large dragon.

The knight sidles up along the ridge, keeping a wary eye on the dragons below. "Well, if you can't do anything about it, he'll be killed anyway," he says earnestly. "This particular dragon has become somewhat of a local menace, and we need to defend ourselves more than we need to try to reason with every dragon we meet."

Fruxon shrugs at the knight, and looks at the dragons again. "Open it when you feel ready. This particular target is dangerous. You may just end up having to kill him yourselves."

The Firedrake catches the tube easily in a foreclaw, turning it over to observe the human writing and sigil on one side. The dragon's expression is unreadable. For a moment he is silent as the knight speaks, then he regards the mage shrewdly. "We will take a look." He says nothing more, only looking back to his flight-mates and calling to them in Drakine. "Would one of you go get the chest to the east? We may need whatever is inside of it." This being said, he slinks closer to the chest nearest the mage, ignoring humans and corpse alike.

It seems as if he is done speaking, but the dragon pauses, turning his head to look over his wing at the Armored Wyvern. "And why should we fear treachery?" The Firedrake's voice almost seems amused, as if asking a child a question. "Obviously none of us are unaware of the possibilities. But, between the five of us, I would think you would have more faith in our ability to spot a backbiting human before any damage can be done." He shifts his wings, tilting his head curiously. "If you concern yourself with the safety of strangers, you open yourself up for attack from a different angle. Concern yourself with the present."

Stiria hissed again. This whole armistice left her wanting to raze the scorched and charred remains of the battlefield. To top it all off, they were charged with looking into some pesky dragon who couldn't learn how to keep himself off of a hit list? Stiria practically roared the very thought burned a fire in belly! She didn't know which was more pitiful: the dim-witted dragon or the pathetic humans who could not handle him themselves. Despite this, it seemed she was stuck without any options and lest she leave the others to go do the True Firedrake's bidding, she had best collect the contents of that chest quickly. Nevertheless, her eyes remained deadlocked on the human scum – she said nothing but her gaze was not nearly as friendly as the ones offered by those around her.

    {Akensken waits...}

Akensken only peripherally noticed the humans going on in their tongue a few yards away, weary as he was from the day's battles and his recent lecture to Chaneak. He clearly heard when their former adversaries had apparently reached a conclusion and the True Firedrake proceeded to address his fellow dragons, however, requesting a search of a cache visible beyond the ridge. The Armored Wyvern trudged past the Golden Firedrake in front of him, grumbling in passing, "I shall let you have that task. Your wings are lighter." Something in his voice betrayed how sobered he had become.

After a moment, the radiant fire king spoke to Akensken directly, contributing his thoughts on the conversation the craggy wyvern had held with Chaneak. As the elder dragon imparted his wisdom, Akensken's mouth twitched downwards in disdain. "We all gathered here only to investigate and perhaps help one of our kin in need-- we are not traveling together," Akensken responded in a patient, but tired tone. "As such, I was simply trying to give advice to Chaneak here before we parted. A lone dragon is only too vulnerable when his throat is exposed, and too many of us are dying in this time." With a hint of shame, Akensken realized how emotional he had let himself get in the course of merely trying to convey some wisdom. The topic had obviously struck too close to his heart. Even so, he felt obligated to ensure the dragons he came across were not ignorant to the strife and evils of their present days. "As to concern for those who are unfamiliar," he continued, an undertone of spirited magma leaching into his throat, "I care not if I expose my own throat in ensuring the safety of others. It is because of the present that I do so; worrying for dragons besides the self is the only way we will not end up all slaughtered." The heavy dragon shifted his weight, the ground beneath him groaning as a result. "Where would my honor be if I held this belief but did not uphold it?"

The Firedrake gives a faint snort as he continues towards the chest. "A shame, then, that you are not traveling companions." His eyes flick to the Stellar Wyvern who is glaring at the remaining humans, who maintain respectful distance from the dragons. The Armored Wyvern continues speaking, and the Firedrake pauses again, regarding the younger dragon with an unreadable expression.

"To the end of not being slaughtered, as you accurately put it, I wonder if the four of you would humor an old drake and remain for a few moments longer." Despite the phrasing, something about his tone and body language leaves no room for denying his request. "I believe it would be mutually beneficial if you would do this. You may even get something desirable out of it."

As if to assist this last comment, he coils his tail around the nearby chest, using a talon to pry the lid open.

    Stiria
    MP: 19/35

Stiria's gaze shifted the old Firedrake which decided for them that they should travel together. Just who did this dragon think he was? Her travel with them? The Ethereal Guardian scoffed, beating her wings a little harder as she made her way over to the other chest. The dragon must have been senile and lonely to not understand that she clearly had no desire to be around any of them a moment longer, especially if he had decided they should help the humans with their pitiful little plight. "You know nothing of what I desire, dotard," she bit back, although her tone remained cool. "I know not what great powers you hold, but my fate cannot be wrought in steel forged by your fire. You best learn that – mutually beneficial or otherwise."

  11. “Stiria,” the Golden Firedrake called out. “I know a thing or two about fate.” With that cryptic line, Chaneak hopped and fluttered past the ridge he had been standing next to, previously giving Akensken a listening look. Upon landing, he posed behind the human, and spoke around his shoulder. “Not that it matters or that you care much, I imagine.” Chaneak shot the Wyvern an insufferable grin. “But Stiria,” Chaneak spoke, flicking open his weapon and letting a loose ethereal chain slowly snake its way out and dangle pathetically. “Why care so much about a concept so flimsy and arbitrary?”

“Do tell, before we part ways.”

  12. {Akensken waits...}

Hearing the True Firedrake's reply, Akensken felt himself hesitate. He had become averse to traveling with other dragons for any sort of extended duration, for a reason which he knew but disliked to acknowledge; the longer the time spent with them, the more painful the inevitable parting would be. The Armored Wyvern was exhausted already from all the pain he had accrued, but still he knew his duty. He couldn't protect others if he was traveling alone. Neglecting that duty and thinking about the lives he was allowing to be lost as a result, due to his own selfishness... for several years now it had started bringing about a much more persistent and encumbering agony than that which came from the scar of a severed connection. It brought a shroud of shame on himself, which weighed on his mind every hour of every day and led him to self-tormenting. So he called back to the True Firedrake, trying to repress the reluctance in his voice, "I would travel with you as long as you desire, ancient one."

From Stiria and Chaneak's exchange, Akensken caught the word 'fate', and dwelled on it as Chaneak went on. Fate. An omnipresent song twisted enough to force this situation on Akensken-- pain if you act morally, pain if you don't. Pain enough to be weary of the world but sickened at the thought of leaving it as such only so that others may suffer the same pain, leaving you fated to no option but to continue suffering yourself. Fate. What a cruel composition.

The Firedrake seems to snort in response to the Stellar Wyvern, but before he can reply, the golden dragon interrupts. His eyes flick in acknowledgement to the Armored Wyvern, but he makes no other motion yet, seeming to have taken interest in the exchange between the other two dragons.

After the Golden Firedrake seems to have finished speaking, the elder dragon chimes in. "Fate can be a tricky thing," he says smoothly. "Those who have no knowledge nor affinity for it live their lives normally, while those that do..." He snorts. "The feeling of an unwanted destiny, for some. Your own fate being forged, but not by you."

He inclines his head to the starry-patterned female. "Do know that I have no intention of steering your fate down an unwanted path, but your fate changes every time you cross paths with another. The threads mingle, intertwine, even if just for the briefest of moments." He pauses, before glancing at the golden dragon. "Arbitrary it may be, but I would call it fluid, not flimsy."

    [Feravel waits.]

  14. Stiria moves to C7!

Stiria opens the chest and takes the valuables inside!

Stiria glared at the puny firedrake with the human cloth swathed across his wings. "Flimsy? Arbitrary? You're foolish," she bit back, completely ignoring the older dragon who had offered his own remarks. "Destiny is not a future carved in any stone. It is not a device forged in steel by any divine force. Fate merely exists as that which is chosen as one's greatest purpose. Mine, most of all, cannot be decided much less judged by the likes of you. Go swaddle your garbage, hoarder, and dare not speak of that which you claim but fail to understand." And with that, she gathered up the chest she had been after and plundered the loot for herself. She crushed the chest in her talons. The firedrake had best learn his place lest he end up in a similar position.

-- Dragon Leather [Leather] x2 (Sturdy, fireproof leather. It seems insensitive, but the dragon this came from won't be needing it anymore.)
-- Stale Bread [Grain | +1 Def (One Battle)] x2 (Why do humans eat this?)

(The profile thread has been updated, with the exception of character profiles. Please update your profiles at your next convenience. Those of you with Burst Points: you can't use them yet, you just have them. Those of you who have not done Temper yet: please consider sorting this out. @Ziolang, remember to adjust your level and experience this time, you still have Ira at 2. Any questions can be directed at me in the OoC thread. You can begin freeforming at this point; the next battle will be posted once the scene has moved sufficiently. [I'll come in with Feravel to help things along at some point])

  16. The Firedrake breathes a long exhale as the humans seem to collectively decide the dragons have lost interest in them. The two mages and lone knight quickly make their exit, with the amber eyes of the old dragon following them until they have left the area. With the battle over, the Firedrake uncoils his tail from the chest; the blaze on his back and wings dies down, until it seems that only the embers of the fire remain. He seems to check himself for superficial wounds; aside from a few cracked scales, he appears unharmed.

The Firedrake turns his head to address and approach the other dragons, bowing his neck for a moment in acknowledgement. "[tip id=1 content=Feravel Blazewing in English; surname directly translates to Burning Wings]Féravel Miçasiisa[/tip], at your service. And may I know the names of those who aided me?" He gives a slight pause to allow for response, before his gaze flicks to the starry wyvern at the other chest.

"As others cannot judge your fate, you cannot judge theirs," He says smoothly. "For all we know, his fate may have led him to understand on a different level. Destiny is not carved in stone, no, but scratched on the surface. Not impossible to affect, but difficult to direct. It can be changed, but rarely by one's own volition." He snorts a puff of smoke to punctuate his comment, before turning to the so far more accepting Armored Wyvern.

"You seem on the hunt for something," Feravel says, tone suddenly shrewd. "We did not cross paths by accident. There is a reason I ask of you four to stay for a moment- there is something imperative to all of our survival that I wish to inspect." He tilts his head, gaze scanning each of the four in turn. "It would be better to work towards our survival as a team, rather than to wish each other [tip id=2 content=Good Hunting; a phrase meaning to wish one good luck]rala kelai[/tip] and attempt it alone."

  17. The mountainous dragon observed the discussion in silence, absorbing the beliefs of his fellows without feeling obligated to offer his own. Fate seemed to him rather like what the True Firedrake described; especially fickle when others became involved, but as an inescapable guide otherwise. A song forever heard such that it faded into the back of your mind, as good as nonexistent at times, and overbearingly omnipresent at others. Only too capable of leading one to places and people, but dimming thereafter in the presence of the songs of outside beings. That those beings could then serve as envoys of a new fate was a humbling idea which Akensken was only too familiar with at his current age. In truth, if he were mor sensible, he would strive to avoid others altogether, and avoid the risk of having his fate drawn down an unfavorable path. Deep inside he knew he could never be able to do that.

When the elder Firedrake stepped forward and posed his name, the Armored Wyvern replied, "Akensken" and returned the fire king's bow. When Feravel continued afterward, explaining how he thought they should travel together, Akensken responded, "Each of us was merely looking for a good place to settle, I assume, when we happened on each other, and were brought to the attention of the conflict here. I suppose you could call that fate, as we're speaking of it." The True Firedrake seemed to have a motive besides the simple logic of being able to survive better within a group, though. Akensken could almost feel the older dragon prowling around the subject. "Is it a purpose you have in mind, that requires the aid of other dragons such as us? A mission?" Such a prospect would usually be odd to assume, but something about the True Firedrake made him wonder. What would an old, powerful, and wise dragon such as he think of a climate like this, where humans hunted dragons so vehemently and cruelly? If adequately displeased, Feravel seemed in an opportune position to sway and rally his kin towards a common cause-- or, perhaps, against a common enemy. An enemy which had become only too common these days...

  18. Ireísed's emotions poured into her soul, only to seep through the cracks to bleed out in irritability. She wanted to lash out, but against who? She wanted to be bitter, but with what? Lessons of the past echoed through her mind like a soothing mantra, endless repetition. Only to end with the same image. Blood and death. There was no solace in the past. There is no peace in the present. So why hope for the future?

If emotion were visible, everyone would be able to see the estranged rage venting from Ira's nostrils as she exhaled. The other dragons were rambling on about fate or whatever and the Coralwing really couldn't care less. The humans were dead or gone, so it was time to pretend there was a calm to be had. "I am Ireísed." As a sort of afterthought she continued. "Of the Roiling Tides." She gave herself a title, might as well stick to it. "As long as it has nothing to do with that pointless bickering over all that fate stuff, I'm listening." Her gaze turns colder as she stares interrogating daggers at the much older dragon. "Nor anything about letting humans live. Again."

  19. Stiria glared at both Firedrakes with disdain. How dare they attempt to take her destiny from her by forcing their beliefs upon her? Had she played the fool in this life, she would have gone on the assault immediately. But the fool was not her role to play – she stood sentinel as the hierophant in this life – so said the ether. If she were to maintain this position, it would be smartest to play along. "Stiria," she muttered, eyes still aglow with flame. Playing along would be all well and good, but she would not budge. Let these dragons think what they will. Her beliefs were carved in the very essence of her being and no one apart from it could take that from her.

  20. Feravel snorts at the mixed reactions of the other dragons. Akensken he could count on; the Golden Firedrake appears to be waiting for something more easily answered. He had already seen Stiria to be more unruly than her flightmates, so she came as no surprise- it was the Glider that gave the interesting reaction.

The old dragon inclines his head to the Armored Wyvern, an indication that the wyvern will be addressed shortly as Feravel flicks an amber eye to Ira. "Ireísed. Of the Roiling Tides." The Firedrake repeats the Glider's name as if testing it, but something in his tone and expression belies amusement. "You have much to learn about humanity, little one. Given time, you will come to see that the option of aggression is not always the correct one, nor the best one." His tone does not waver from his smooth, patient voice like one would use when answering the curious questions of a hatchling.

    But back to business.

The Firedrake positions himself so that he can address all four of the younger dragons at one time. "In a way, Akensken is correct." Now comes the tone shift- not sharp, but firmer than before, instructing rather than guiding. "I do require the aid of other dragons for my goal- one equally important to all of us. The goal of survival, but something more. Putting a stop to our persecution." He pauses, before his expression becomes that of a tactician who has found the clearest path. His golden eyes seem to flare with an inner fire, brighter than the one that had blazed along his spine in the heat of battle. He raises his head and extends his wings skyward, an ancient and proud creature. A leader.

"And before me are the perfect group of dragons to have answered my call."
